Dear DAREarts stakeholders

DAREarts continues to impact thousands of children and youth across the country by empowering them as leaders through arts-based education. Over the past twenty-three years, DAREarts has grown from a grassroots project to a national scope charity with the help of supporters like you.

We continue to address the serious social issues associated with poverty, bullying, mental health, and violence. Through the delivery of quality leadership and arts-based programs we achieve positive social outcomes for our students through meticulously developed curriculum and teaching methods.

Across Canada we are steadfast in our mission to bring DAREarts to more children and youth in underserved communities. As we set our sights on growth and increased impact, we hope that you will continue to support the important work that we do.

We have a great deal of work ahead of us as we turn our focus to continual improvement, impact assessment, and evidence-based practices to ensure that we are reaching long-term social outcomes for the children and youth that we support.

The year ahead will mark a time of collaboration, community partnerships, and sustainable growth. We hope that our 2017–2018 results reported here compel you to support DAREarts as together, we ignite change for children and youth across Canada.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Field Tarik Muzaffar

DAREarts across CanadaDAREarts began in 1996 when Marilyn Field was teaching in an underserved Scarborough, Ontario school and felt compelled to ignite change for her students.

Marilyn’s unconventional approaches, from playing classical music in detention to taking students to the opera, sent a clear message to each student – you matter, you are worthy, you have potential. Students started coming to school early, excited for the artistic journey ahead – and one by one, lives were changed.

As time passed and Marilyn felt the impact of her efforts, her dream grew bigger and she decided to take a risk and grow her school-based impact.

Today DAREarts operates in Vancouver, Quebec, Toronto, Halifax, and remote northern communities, transforming the lives of thousands of students each year.

Alumni spotlightby Dante Scholar

I have been involved with DAREarts for almost 10 years, since I was in grade 6. I didn’t have too many friends at school and I got picked on constantly for the way I looked and since I was a kid with a quick temper, I ended up getting into a lot of fights and landing in the principal’s office more often than not.

My self-esteem was low and so were my grades in my academic classes. Our principal and our office administrator thought that I would benefit from DAREarts and suggested that I sign up for it. I was unsure of what to expect, but I knew that no matter what happened it had to be better than being at school, so I decided to go. To this day, I am thankful for that decision. I made a bunch of new friends in the program, learned new things, got to travel to different places around the city that I otherwise would not have been able to go and I was introduced to the DARE values: Discipline, Action, Responsibility, Respect, Reflection and Excellence. I take these values everywhere I go, whether that’s with coaching a youth hockey team or just keeping myself on track in school.

In my third year with the program, I truly became passionate about music after our grade 8 class wrote an entire song in one day. To this day I continue to sing and write songs and in high school that same passion for music led to me learning to play guitar.

I believe that I can truly say I would not be where I am today if not for DAREarts. Before I was in the program I never would have imagined that I would be attending Humber College and working towards my degree. I never would have believed that I would be able to coach a group of 11- to 14-year-olds or help out in my community.

I’m glad I was able to be in this program and I’m honoured that now I get the privilege of being able to work with the young leaders in the DAREarts program year after year.

By being in the program, I was given the chance to dare to dream and for that, I will always be thankful for DAREarts.

I believe that

I can truly say I

would not be where

I am today if not

for DAREarts.

Programs“I would like to thank you for choosing this school for the first edition of DAREarts in French. Our young people are very lucky to be able to participate in such an activity.

“This activity was ideal for this group. At École de l’Assomption, this Grade 4 group had several students who had different personal challenges. To be able to participate in an activity like yours allowed them to meet and overcome their challenges and therefore be better equipped for their future. Indeed, DAREarts has had a positive impact on all the participant’s personal development. Without them realizing it, they worked very hard. They so enjoyed participating and going to the Atelier 19 workshops and putting on the show.

“Obviously, the impact of this kind of activity will come later. But DAREarts has sowed a seed in each of them of that, I am convinced. THANK you and see you again.” Julien Gauthier, Éducateur spécialisé commission scolaire val-des-cerfs, Granby, Quebec

“DAREarts is far more than an art program. It is a program which dares students to find their voices and express their ideas through a multitude of avenues. The DAREarts staff has the unique ability to push children out of their comfort zone and into the realm of emotional growth. Throughout the week, my students were exposed to a wide variety of art forms where they flourished working both independently and within teams. In the beginning, many found it difficult to express their feelings, and work with students who were not close friends, but with the help of the amazing staff, the students found their confidence and developed bonds with new peers.” Justin, teacher, Vancouver

DAREarts is a leadership organization first.DAREarts experiences are designed to help youth become the leaders they need

to be to face life’s challenges. Students are ‘dared’ to embrace specific values related to each of the arts experiences and lead through these values.

Discipline Action Responsibility / Respect Excellence… our youth leaders’ top 5 most used values

Why do these values matter? Students who achieve early success in school are more likely to continue to perform well academically, go on to post-secondary

education and secure meaningful employment. Students who graduate high school are more likely to find meaningful employment and will have greater earning

potential throughout their lives compared to those who do not graduate.

When youth connect to the wider world through DAREarts leadership and cultural experiences, they unlock their potential and embrace their best selves.

This changes our communities for the better.

Over 217,382 young people across Canada have unlocked their potential with DAREarts

since 1996.

Continuum of youth engagement DAREarts leadership tiers

In a continuum model of youth engagement each skill builds on the strengths of other activities. Youth leadership, civic activism and engagement all contribute to and derive from positive youth development. That positive youth
