The 2016 Lorain CountyFair opens Aug. 22 andmany people will be flood-ing in to see the attrac-tions held at the grand-stand which acts as a cen-tral hub to all of the otherattractions.
According to Tim Bu-chs, a director of the fair, this year’s lineup will fea-ture some exciting actsand attractions includingrock band .38 Special on
Aug. 22 and singer-song-writer Frankie Ballard onAug. 23.
“Every year we make alist of who we feel are goodcandidates, and it justcomes down to routing andschedules and that type ofthings,” he said. “We couldget anywhere from 10 to 20names, and it just comesdown to what scheduleswill permit.”
Buchs said that whilemany spend all day at thefair, he thinks that somepeople come out just tocatch the shows at thegrandstand.
“We would hope thatwould make them considercoming, but a lot of peoplecome to the fair and makea day of it,” he said. “Goto the shows, or just walk
around. There’s entertain-ment going on constantly. But yeah, I’m sure theshows are a draw and thatpeople come that particu-lar day just for the show.
Yes. I don’t for sure knowa percentage rate.”
Tickets to see the grand-stand concerts are $25 aswell as the $5 price of ad-mission to the fair. Chil-dren under 9 years old getin free.
Senior citizens and mil-itary personnel also get infree on Aug. 25, accordingto Buchs.
Brian Twining, LorainCounty senior fair boardpresident, said that he’sexcited for a grandstandevent that may fly undermost people’s radars: Thehorse pull on Aug. 25.
“A lot of people don’tknow about it,” he said. “Iguess a better word for itis ‘old school’.”
He said that horse pullsare reminiscent of the kindof activities that fairs werecreated to showcase.
“Back when they wouldput together a fair, it was‘my horse is better thanyours’ or ‘my wife can cooka better pie than yours andwe’ll get Jill our neighborto come down and figureout who has the betterpie,’” he said.
“That’s how the originalfairs came together.”

The 2016 Lorain CountyFair is preparing to get un-derway, and with this year’sfair there are a number ofnew features to the fair-ground, according to BrianTwining, the Lorain Countysenior fair board president.
The main improvementof the grounds is the newVeterans and EMS build-ing, which sits behind theFair Board Office, 23000Fairgrounds Road in Wel-
lington.The veterans held a spe-
cial place for John Emerich, who served on the board for44 years until his death in2013.
The board took up thatpassion by replacing thebarn that formerly housedthe veterans.
“When John passedaway, the board kind oftook it upon themselvesto say, ’this is somethinghe really wanted,’” he said.“We kind of dug in, and theVFW donated some moneyand we had some fund-raisers going on, and we
decided this late fall, earlywinter, to put this up.”
There will be a ribboncutting ceremony at 11 a.m.Aug. 22 which will featurea special guest, accordingto Twining.
“We actually askedJohn’s widow, Judy, to comeup and cut the ribbon,” hesaid.
“It’ll be kind of neat tohave her up there. It’ll bekind of like closure for usboard members.”
Also new this year willbe general grounds im-provements such as lights

For many people, the al-lure of the Lorain CountyFair is the entertainmentthey find while just wan-dering around the grounds.
Tom Adams, the freestage director, said thatthis year the fair is offer-ing some of the best enter-tainment you can find.
New this year will bethe Dock Dogs, which isan event in which dogscompete to see which canjump the highest and far-thest into a body of water. The competitions will beheld near gate three.
“They do basically adog competition,” he said.“There will be some dem-onstrations and stuff likethat. They’ll be jumpingand grabbing various itemsoff of a hanging line. Thedogs will jump higher andfurther to try to grab thisitem. I think there shouldbe four or five demonstra-tions each day. Starting atlike 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. and
the last one usually con-cluding about 7 p.m.”
On the afternoon ofAug. 27, the fair will wel-come singer Morgan Myles, whom Adams believes hasa future in country music.
“I think she might beone of those up and comingartists,” he said. “She’ll beplaying 1-3 p.m. She has anagent in Nashville. She hasher own website and plentyof videos on YouTube. Shehas a really good voice; Iwouldn’t be surprised tosee her on the charts in thenear future.”
According to Adams, it’s
not difficult to find peoplewilling to perform as thefree entertainment at thefair, because of the amountof exposure the performersget.
“Because the LorainCounty Fair is a pretty bigvenue, and people trying togain exposure will gain iton our stages,” he said. “Itell a lot of our artists, theymight want to bring lotsof business cards becausethere are lots of peoplelooking for acts from othervarious fairs and festivals.Stuff like that. They’ll lookat the acts that we’ve had.”
LORAINCOUNTYFAIR
Always entertainingFair will feature free entertainment
outside of the grandstand, new blacktop to cut downon holes and trip areas andincreased handicap park-ing, which Twining saidwas sorely needed.
“That’s always been a
problem; not enough,” hesaid. “More and more peo-ple need access to handicapparking.”
According to Twining, these improvements werepaid for through fundrais-ing, donations, and also thefair board’s budget.
“We did get some grantmoney, the VFW with theveteran’s building” he said.
“I can’t give you an ex-act number, but it was quitea few VFW groups that do-nated money. It wouldcome out of our budget, too. We’ve been planning this.In November we have Nightat the Races that raisedsome money to help withthe costs. We prepare, wework year round to makethose fairgrounds better.”
