He had a special set of big sharp teeth which he used to eat people. He would capture people and would eat. Because of Tuwawa, people of Matuku decided to leave their home island and take refuge in neighbouring island. They all set of in their boats. As they were leaving, unfortunately one of the babies named Tuifaga slipped from his mother’s arms and fell into the shallow water. The mother of the child did not find out until they reached the other island. Apart from the giant, a witch named Makelesi also used to live on that island with her dog. While chasing seagulls on beach, the dog found the baby and called Makelesi, Seeing the poor baby, Makelsi’s heart melted, she took the baby home and cared for him and soon he grew into a strong young man. One day while he was going for fishing, Makelsi warned him about Tuwawa the giant and why people left the island. Tuifaga was curious of giant, so instead of going for fishing, together with the dog he walked towards the giant’s home. He met the giant on the beach and challenged him for a fight. Tuwawa was a giant and had upper hand in the battle thus Tuifaga’s dog that was also very strong also joined in the battle. Finding himself one sided the giant ran towards his house and started pushing out all his children to fight but they all were killed including his wife, thinking the dog must be exhausted, Tuwawa once gain jumped into the battle but he was killed and lay dead on the ground. Makelesi was happy to hear about the death of cruel giant, next day Tuifaga set off in his canoe to the neighboring island to meet his people and when his mother saw her son, she was overwhelmed with a joy, and together with all the people they returned to the Island of Matuku. Plot / Summary

This Story is from the island of Matuku in Fiji, where used to live a fierce giant named Tuwawa Balavu.

Rights: All people are given certain rights by the country’s Constitutions Bill of Rights that cannot be taken

away.

Rules and Laws: Everyone has to follow rules and obey laws. Laws give fairness and protect the health and

safety of people.

Responsibilities: Being informed citizen about our government and community is an important

responsibility. Voting in election is one responsibility of a good citizen. Volunteering to help in the

community is another example of being a good citizen.
