    Midlothian and Borders regions of Scotland. Project affordability issue is key to the Border Rail project. A re

    regular service using a lower cost solution but incorporating dfeatures that allow for future electrification of the system

    Project Info/CostAfter the original public private partnership (P3) process collapsed, Transport Scotland cNetwork Rail (Network Rail is an arms-length central government body and the owneoperator of UKs railway infrastructure) to lead the Border Rail Project.

    Network Rail appointed BAM Nuttall (Dutch based contractor) as the main contractor. UResearch Services (US Based Consultants) carried out major design work.

    First sod turned in March 2010 but construction only began in earnest April 2013. Line

    Sept 2015.

    Automated light metro systems are prohibitivelyexpensive and necessitate limited regional trans

    coverage.

    $300M tunnelled and $130M/km elevated trans

    systems are not affordable on a regional basis.

    We can learn from other regions that maximize ttransit coverage through integrating available

    infrastructure into the overall transit system.(We preach reuse in waste management why not infrastructure ?
