1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Introduction

When creating my horror trailer I aimed to link my three products to the horror trailer. In order to apply this to my work I had to take into account the other factors that would help me to achieve this

Page 3: Document1

Location

I filmed majority of the storyline in the Local woods (court farm woods) which fit in very well with the storyline that was of the horror genre. It provided an airy chill that made the branches move creating that echo in the atmosphere which would leave the audience having a dark, spooky sense from the scenes.

The setting gave me low key lighting which is a convention of the horror genre that is used in numerous films from the horror genre, it helps the audience establish the genre of the film through the disorientated sense it gives the audience

Research

With the three trailers I analyzed I took into consideration the props, costumes and effects used to help me with creating my trailer. I analyzed The Pact, The Innkeepers and a drama (Girl in Progress)

Through this it was allowing me develop the ability to differentiate different genre films and how I could make mine clearest to the audience I was targeting

E.g. In The Pact low key lighting is essential along with the digetic music used to create that dark sense

Camera Angles

I've learnt through analyzing other horror trailers the big role the camera angles play in terms of getting a scene across best to the audience to create the conventions of that specific genre

But for the Horror genre it is used to portray suspense and tension also to show the build of that tension accurately drawing the audience in more

For example in The pact there is use of point of view shot and close-up’s to portray emotions. Which I applied to my trailer and used at specific moment’s to actually bring the audience in on the film linking to the conventions of horror which is to give the audience that surreal feeling which makes them apart of the horror connecting to it on a deeper level to link in with the suspense and tension

Sound

When deciding what soundtrack would go best with my film I looked at the trailers I analyzed and the pace that the music would be at through certain points, the tone of the music also

Therefore when adding the music to my trailer I gave it a steady low base tone through the build of the suspense then in the tensions scenes I went for a sudden shift of music to speed up the pace and the higher pitch to engage the audience. This links to the convention of the horror genre due to the music they use is always suspense filled with instruments like the piano and guitar which I used

My inspiration when it came to sound was The innkeepers as the old-fashioned music linked to the storyline and the horror genre which inspired me to think about my trailer as a whole in order for the music to have a feeling leading to the horror genre

Typography

•I used this font as I believe it represents the story line of the film which is dark spirits the blacked out text gives this affect and the wobbles in the writing reminds me of the ripples you make in water which links in with the name of film ‘Dark water’ •The color black links to the gothic style and depressing dark scenes which best portrayed conventions of the horror genre

Poster

I also wanted to reflect conventions of the horror trailer in my poster To do this I took into consideration techniques that would help me to portray the

conventions: I used Low key lighting to give an airy atmosphere to the poster which gave the

film a clear link to the gothic style of the horror genre I researched other Posters which I thought linked to myStoryline and as well the horror genre which helped me geta clear concept on the things I could include to relate to theHorror genre The Apparition was my main focus For inspiration on making my poster Which showed me the specific layout Used in posters. I challenged the typical layout by placingthe title at the top of the page as I felt itWould draw in a wider audience throughthe style

Poster Continued….

•I incorporated the use of hands in my poster but in a different way for it to resemble more of the supernatural realm•I used credits on my film and the date of the film at the same positioning which is the bottom•I also used darkening outlines to show the main focus in the film in terms of the character which is front and centre in the poster•I incorporated the film setting in which was the background of my poster

Magazine Cover

I chose to do my magazine with Empire as they are a popular brand in terms of the latest movie information and guides

For my magazine cover I chose to use an image of the protagonist as the main focus in the woods which makes significant links for the reader to have a clear understanding of the basis of film when reading the magazine

By using the wood setting I was able to have a clear link in with my poster and magazine cover

The typography used had a link in which I used bigger fonts to show the priority in certain headlines and in the movie featured on the cover

I also color coded the colors I used for fonts in which I got inspiration from the covers I analyzed which was Jennifer's body and Harry potter

I used the typical style and color used for the empire title in order to keep to the magazines conventions I just added smoke to the bottom to make it original edition for the movie featured
