PAGE TWO SAINT CYRIL OF JERUSALEM NOVEMBER 24TH 2019

From The Desk of Father MacFrom The Desk of Father Mac Today is the final Sunday of the Church Year. Next Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent and the start of a new liturgi-cal year. On this final Sunday on the Church calendar we celebrate a special feast: The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe or, as most of us know it, the Feast of Christ the King. Christ is a King unlike any other. His kingship extends to all places, all people, and all times. Christ manifests his kingship through his death on the Cross, in which he offers salvation to all people. Above all, Christ wants to be the King of our hearts!

As he himself told us, Christ our King came not to be served but to serve. Our King loves his subjects so much he offered his life for them and he invites us to do the same, pouring ourselves out in love and service, especially for the poor and vulnerable. Our King invites us to show care and con-cern for his subjects by serving others and learning to rec-ognize the face of Christ in the most vulnerable.

We have a concrete opportunity to show the love of Christ the King for the poor through our participation in today’s second collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human De-velopment (CCHD). The Catholic Campaign for Human De-velopment is the national anti-poverty program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops, working to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ "... to bring good news to the poor ... release to captives ... sight to the blind, and let the oppressed go free." (Luke 4:18)

The belief that those who are directly affected by unjust systems and structures have the best insight into knowing how to change them is central to CCHD. CCHD works to break the cycle of poverty by helping low-income people participate in decisions that affect their lives, families and communities. CCHD offers a hand up, not a hand out.

When you participate in this collection, you help groups of low-income people in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and across the country in their efforts to provide access to af-fordable housing, health care, jobs, employee-owned busi-nesses, and rights for immigrants. By supporting CCHD, you help out your own neighbors, because 25 percent of your contribution stays within your own diocese! Pope Francis reminds us that the poor are not statistics to be counted, but people to be encountered. We are invited to offer friendship, solidarity and welcome to the poorest of our sisters and brothers and to recognize Christ in those who we meet or whose stories we hear. Supporting CCHD is a wonderful way to show the love of Christ the King to the suffering poor and offer them hope. You can learn more about CCHD by visiting the website of the U.S. Catholic Bishops at www.usccb.org. If you would like to learn more about the reality of poverty in the United States I encourage you to visit www.povertyusa.org. YOURS IN CHRIST, REV. EBEN MACDONALD, PASTOR

ST CYRIL OF JERUSALEM PARISH STEWARDSHIP

NOVEMBER 17TH

“….giving thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light.” C 1:12 God wants his Stewards to be happy! Instead of looking at the Ten Commandments as being restrictive and telling us what we can’t do, look at them as guides for living a joy-filled and peaceful life. Most of our problems arise when we put our own needs first or spend most of our time trying to ac-quire “things”. Try putting God first in all things instead. Ask Him how He wants you to use your gifts.

Thank you for your generosity

PLEASE JOIN US IN THE GROTTO FOR COFFEE AND DONUTS AFTER THE 8 AND 10 AM MASSES THIS WEEKEND. COME MAKE NEW FRIENDS!

SAFEGUARDING THE CHILDREN BUILDING ACTIVE LISTENING SKILLS WITH CHILDREN

Building your active listening skills with the chil-dren in your life can help you communicate more effectively with them, and it can also clue you in to any suspicious or potentially dangerous relationships in their lives. Active listening lets

the speaker know that you have heard, understood, and valued what he or she said. Often, children don’t feel this way, but with a few easy tactics, you can change that, building a relationship of trust and respect. As an active listener, be sure to make eye contact while the child is speaking. Ask follow-up questions and check in to make sure you both understand what’s being said. Avoid “yes or no” questions and instead ask open-ended questions that will keep the conversation going. For more tips, contact us to get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Children are to be Seen and Heard,” at http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.
