PAGE TWO SAINT CYRIL OF JERUSALEM MAY 17TH 2020
FROM THE DESK OF FATHER MAC
Have you ever seen an old prison movie where an inmate draws lines on the wall of his cell to keep track of how long he’s been imprisoned? He’s just marking time, counting the days until his release. Sometimes in the same movie you’ll see another prisoner making use of his time to make each day count by reading books, taking classes to complete his education, or exercising to get in better shape. The exam-ple of these two prisoners describes two very different and contrasting approaches to life. I recently saw a slogan writ-ten on the ground with sidewalk chalk during the current pandemic that captures these two approaches. It read: “Count the days OR make every day count!” Perhaps we feel like we’ve been locked up in a jail cell as we’ve been self-quarantining at home for the past couple of months during the coronavirus pandemic. What has our attitude been like during this time? Have we just been marking time, counting down the days until our “release?” Or have we tried to make every day count by nurturing our relationships with family and friends and growing in our relationship with God in the midst of our other responsibili-ties? Maybe our attitude has shifted from one pole to the other during this time. We all have our good days and our bad days, after all. As the old saying goes, “Attitude is everything!” A positive attitude toward life, even when we face challenges and obstacles, can go a long way toward our overall sense of happiness, contentment, and well-being. If we’ve simply been “counting the days” during this time of self-quarantine, chances are we’ve experienced an overall sense of restlessness, disquiet, and discontentment. On the other hand, if we’ve been trying to make each day count by devoting time to personal prayer and growing in our rela-tionship with God, by nurturing our relationship with family members and friends, and finding ways to help others, we may have experienced a sense of inner peace, calm and contentment that has sustained us even in the midst of the current difficulties we are experiencing. This is the kind of peace that comes from knowing that we may be in the mid-dle of a storm, but Jesus is in the boat with us. I recently came across a photo that forms an anagram from the word “Quarantine” to create a plan for making each day count during this time of sheltering at home. If we fol-low this plan, it just may prove to be the path to inner peace, calm, and contentment we all crave even in the midst of life’s storms. This plan would also serve us well even as quarantines are lifted and we start to resume some of our normal daily activities. It could help us to set aside our daily worries and preoccupations to make some quality time for personal prayer and continue growing closer to the Lord. So, will you count the days or make every day count? YOURS IN CHRIST, REV. EBEN MACDONALD, PASTOR

Safeguarding the Children
Did you Know?
PROTECT CHILDREN FROM CYBER BULLYING Cyberbullying can happen at any time, on any online platform. It can take many forms – cruel direct messages, threatening emails, mean texts, shared photos, and more. Victims of cyber-bullying often suffer
from anxiety and depression, and their self-esteem can be diminished. They may be reluctant to talk about bullying, so parents need to be on top of all their chil-dren’s online activities. Asking questions and getting information about popular apps and sites will help, too. For more information, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Cyber-Bullying: Protecting Young People from Technology Dangers” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/. A public memorial mass will take place at Saint Cyril’s when circumstances permit.
