Message from the President
Dave Phillips
The 2011 bowling season has started with a bang! Super Bowl Sunday was a great success, especially if you won a square or two - the big winner was Jim Reach. The Valentine's Day event was a winner - all the couples survived the competition! The 1st SW mixed triples was a success, and it was nice to see that several of our members were successful in Sun City, AZ. Coming up on March 6th is the President's Cup Singles, open to both men and women, and the St. Patrick's Day event on March 20th. As a reminder, if you want to play in these events, sign up ASAP. If for any reason you have to pull out at the last minute, call the person in charge ASAP. The same applies to the regular weekly bowling events - call at least 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled start time to be included - by 9 a.m. for the Tues/Thurs Competitive Pairs; and 30-60 minutes ahead of each of the social bowling events. It's the least you can do to make the job of the volunteer organizer a little easier! Take a look at the Master Schedule which is posted to plan your future participation in club events. Happy bowling!

Re: Open House- Saturday, May 7th
Many of you have been, or will be, asked to serve as
Hosts during and after the Open House. Before
committing, one should understand the duties
involved. They are two-fold.
The easy part is to be present during the Open
House on Saturday, May 7, to meet the potential new
members, guide them through the prepared program,
answer their questions, help them roll a few trial
bowls and, to some degree, sell the benefits of club
membership, including the privilege of volunteering.
The second job, more important and more difficult,
occurs after a person becomes a paid New Member.
Each New Member will be assigned their personal
Host. The Host will be a mentor until the New
Member is fully indoctrinated and hopefully taking
part in club activities. There should be a one-on-one
meeting at the club to fully explain the facilities,
loaner bowls, honor system beverages, other
supplies, lockers, scheduled or practice bowling and
the many uses of our well-equipped kitchen.
A Host needs to encourage their mentee to take
advantage of the group or individual lessons as
suitable. The final task, and perhaps the most
difficult, is to avoid the mentee feeling they are
never skilled enough to bowl in the social
competition. They need to learn the rules, sign up to
bowl and trust that the experienced members will be
helpful, not critical.
As Host Coordinator, I will track the progress of
every New Member and hope to talk with each after
their first social bowling competition.

P.S. If this is a job you would enjoy and I have not
recruited you, please contact me and earn a little
volunteer glory!

Last Call for Newport's Western Canada Bowls Tour
Ah, winter is almost over and now what do we have to look
forward to? How about joining other Newporters on our September 2011 Western Canada Bowls Tour.
We have 13 committed so far, but there is plenty of room for more to join us.
We depart on September 12, 2011 and return on September 23rd. September was chosen to avoid the
summer crowds, yet still able to enjoy Indian summer/fall weather. Tour duration is 12 days/11 nights.
We depart from Orange County airport to Seattle for a 2 night stay, then take the Seattle to Victoria high
speed ferry for a 2 nights in Victoria. After touring and bowling in Victoria, we board another ferry to
Vancouver for a 3 night stay there. Continuing our travels via the "Rocky Mountaineer" train, we cross
the Canadian Rockies to Lake Louise. To insure that we don't miss any of this magnificent mountain
scenery, our train travel includes an overnight layover at Kamloops as well as a single night
accommodation at the beautiful Deer Lodge at Lake Louise. Finally we wind up the tour with a 2 night
stay in Calgary before boarding our return flight from Calgary back to Orange County.
Half day of bowls will be arranged with a local club at our major city stops of Seattle, Victoria, Vancouver,
and Calgary. The schedule allows a day and a half of free time to explore these cities on your own or with
friends. For instance, while in Seattle some of us are planning to rent a car and tour a Boeing aircraft
factory.
While many of us have taken family vacations in Western Canada, this tour offers something different- the
camaraderie of traveling with a group of folks you know with everything included, comfortable hotel
accommodations, all breakfasts and dinners, a group social cocktail get together before dinner each
evening to share experiences, lawn bowling in new venues with a great opportunity to socialize with the
local folks and all transportation including buses, ferry rides amongst the islands of Puget Sound and a ride
on a train through the Canadian Rockies, a spectacular sight.

Valentine’s Day Tournament
The Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club looked so
inviting on Valentines Sunday with its Green,
dressed to kill in red and white. There were 18
pairs competing in the tournament. Helen Dinkins
was easily the Belle of the Bowl and her husband,
Dick, was there to take pictures. Her partner on
the green, Ron Temple looked very debonair in his
matching outfit.
The winners, Valentine Sweethearts Patty and Dale
Lucas, showed what a great team they are. Bob
and Emily Carpenter came second, Tibor and
Pauline Kozma, third and Ron Temple and Helen
Dinkins, not just looking the part but playing it,
came fourth.
There were a lot of people involved in making this
day such a great success. Chuck Muser organized the
bowling. Emily Carpenter organized the food with
the help of Fran Stewart, Pauline Kozma, Ginny
Kelley, Helen Dinkins, Sally Westcott, and Sally
Cadwallader. Many people were involved in the
clean up. It was a memorable day for everyone.
Twenty five people stayed for the Super Bowl game.
There was another tote board based on the real game
score results by quarters. Jim Reach came out the big
winner with both the first and final quarters on
the same board square. How lucky is that?
Ray Norris ran a good competition and the tote boards he organized were a big success with lots of winners. Cathy MacDonald and Patty Lucas decorated the club house in a fabulous Super Bowl theme and organized a good spread with everyone bringing their best Super Bowl dishes. What a great way to celebrate the BIG GAME.
Super Bowling 2011
Everybody was a winner at the big Super Bowling 2011 party at the club. There were 30 people competing. Through a blind draw, bowlers were divided into two teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers with Dale Lucas and the Green Bay Packers with Patty Lucas. Team captains then divided their teams into five triples for the Super Bowling Game. The Steelers outscored the Packers 24 to 10. Ray Norris created a Super Bowling "Pot of Gold" tote board based on team scores from the bowling result. Ed Shearin of the Steelers held the winning square.
