First reading 1 Kings 17:10-16 Elijah the Prophet went off to Sidon. For thus the Lord speaks, the God of Israel: “Jar of meal shall not be spent, jug of oil shall not be emped, before the day when the Lord sends rain on the face of the earth.”’ The woman went and did as Elijah told her and they ate the food, she, himself and her son. A poor widow came and put in two small coins, the equivalent of a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, ‘I tell you solemnly, this poor widow has put more in than all who have con- tributed to the treasury; for they have all put in money they had over, but she from the lile she had has put in everything she pos- sessed, all she had to live on.’ Prayer over the Offerings Look with favour, we pray, O Lord, upon the sacrificial giſts offered here, that, celebrang in mystery the Passion of your Son, we may honour it with loving devoon. There are many indulgences, applicable only to the Souls in Purgatory, that can be obtained during the month of November. The following notes from the official Vacan website are designed to assist in understanding the pracce of indulgences: 1. This is how an indulgence is defined in the Code of Canon Law (can. 992) and in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 1471): "An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Chrisan who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed condions through the acon of the Church which, as the minister of redempon, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the sasfacons of Christ and the saints". 2. In general, the gaining of indulgences requires certain prescribed condions (below, nn. 3, 4), and the performance of certain prescribed works. 3. To gain indulgences, whether plenary or paral, it is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the me the indulgenced work is completed. 4. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addion to being in the state of grace: — have the interior disposion of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; — have sacramentally confessed their sins; — receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly beer to receive it while parcipang in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); — pray for the intenons of the Supreme Ponff. 5. It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental Confession and especially Holy Communion and the prayer for the Pope's intenons take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days (about 20) before or aſter the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope's intenons is leſt to the choice of the faithful, but an "Our Father" and a "Hail Mary" are suggested. One sacramental Confession suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Holy Father's intenons are required for each plenary indulgence. 6. For the sake of those legimately impeded, confessors can commute both the work prescribed and the condions required (except, obviously, detachment from even venial sin). 7. Indulgences can always be applied either to oneself or to the souls of the deceased, but they cannot be applied to other persons living on earth. UNDERSTANDING INDULGENCES
