t least 1696 traffic fines were issued to non-compliant motorists in Mpumalanga Aroads by the Department of Community

Safety, Security and Liaison traffic officers between 29 July and 04 August 2013 during normal day to day operations.The fines were issued to motorists with un-roadworthy vehicles and to those who violate traffic rules and regulations.MEC Vusi Shongwe has applauded the officers saying they need to continue clamping down on reckless drivers. During the operations 394 vehicles were impounded whilst 110 were also discontinued for not being roadworthy.“These vehicles which are not road worthy contribute to road accidents and we must get rid of them from our roads,” said Shongwe.Subsequently 12 motorists were arrested for offences ranging from drunken driving, speeding and other traffic violations.Shongwe said that these arrests will send a strong message to road users that the Department remain committed to enhancing road safety.He has also called on motorists to drive with care, ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and that they do not drive under the influence of alcohol and fail to obey road rules. He has also called on community members to report any reckless driving to the authorities because law enforcement agencies cannot be on every part of the road.

Brown Snake Eagle (Circaetus cinereus) is a species of bird of

prey in the Accipitridae family. It is found throughout sub-

Saharan Africa (www.wikipedia.org)

A BROWN Snake Eagle was shot in its wing earlier this month. The eagle was taken to the Sterkspruit Veterinary Clinic where veterinarians, amongst them Dr Chester-Brown worked tirelessly to ensure its recuperation. The Highlands Panorama News reported last week about two eagles that were in need of medical help and took up temporary residency at the veterinary clinic. Unfortunately the Brown Snake Eagle did not make it. The eagle died due to its injuries. It is unsure why someone would have shot this gorgeous eagle. They are the largest of all the snake eagles. They live in dry habitats, with a range spanning much of western, eastern, and southern Africa.Brown Snake Eagles are, as their name indicates, almost entirely brown. The head and body are dark brown, while the flight feathers are mottled white and the under wing is

gray. The tail is brown with narrow white barring and a white tip. The cere, long bare legs, and feet are pale gray. The beak is black, and the eyes are yellow.Wild birds are strictly controlled by conservation agencies. This eagle was found in Badfontein towards the Bambi area (N4). One often wonders about the level of human cruelty in relation to nature. Don't practice target shooting at living breathing animals, rather use a coke can or a proper target on a fence.

A wonderful distinguished lady turns 95

“You're my best friend,” said Mrs Antoinette Cloete to her mother, Mrs Lettie Baragwanath. Mrs Baragwanath celebrated her 95th birthday with family and friends at the St. John's Anglican Church Hall on Friday. Mrs Cloete and other family members sang their mother, grandmother and great grandmother's praises. Her actual birthday was on Sunday 11 August.

She is still as 'fit as a fiddle' (with her age in mind) and sharp minded. She is extremely witty and a wonderful lady. It would be hard to guess that she was born in 1918. Mrs Baragwanath has a lifetime of memories of Lydenburg and her family has deep roots in the community. She was quite adamant that no one should make a big fuss over her birthday. Congratulations on 95 years as an inspiration to others.

VANSA has appointed the Limpopo Arts and Culture Association (LACA) to be Regional Co-ordinators of both Limpopo and Mpumalanga province, to promote the work of VANSA and to develop a database of visual artists, who will be forwarded information on opportunities on issues such as training, employment, exhibitions, workshops, resident artists etc, within the visual arts fraternity. k wik-en-weeg soms voor ek 'n storie vertel. Juis omdat baie mense Die Uwe ken en Eweet hoe lyk die persoon wat Hoorhierso

skryf. Daarom skop my storie af met blou eiers. Ek het dit gekook en gekook. Dit wou nie gaar nie. Toe dog ek nou moet dit afgedop word want ek is alweer laat vir werk. Wel, die eiers was gaar maar daar was so 'n snaakse blou-aarkleurige vlek om die gestolde eierwit. Die gril-kriewels het by my ruggraat afgeloop. Maar iewers het gesonde verstand by die deur uitgevlieg en ek sit die eiers in 'n kosblik. Lady Gaga kom maak toe so halfuur later by die werk haar opwagting, dis my selfoonluitoon. My ma bel... baie bekommerd dat ek die eiers geëet het. Gelukkig het almal my in vierwindrigtings getrek voor ek nog kon sit. “Die eiers is vrot my kind.” Natuurlik is my eetlus, wat 'n goeie ding is, toe die res van die dag weg. En ek kan kos maak. Want ek het nie die eiers gekook tot dit blou is nie. Maar dit was blou omdat dit vrot was. Die eintlike rede hoekom ek 'n eiertjie wou kook het niks te doen met ontbyt nie. Maar omdat ek Sondagaand besluit het ek wil weer probeer gewig verloor. Maar teen Maandagoggend 09:00 was ek nie meer lus nie. Wie kan my kwalik neem? Nou ja... A.G. Lydenburg’s got talent

Lydenburg’s Got Talent took place at Legends, The Heads Centre, this past weekend. It was part of The Heads Carnival. Entertainers competed against each other on Friday

afternoon. On Saturday afternoon the entertainers were back for the final round. They showed the judges who really has talent in Lydenburg. The first prize was won by Tshegofatso Mashilangwako (16) (left) for singing. She won a R750 Tekkie Town

voucher, a gift from Crazy Store, Voda Shop, Trendy Homes and Maxi's. Respect Ndlovu (22) (right) came second for his dancing and won a R100 from PNA and a Maxi's gift.

HYUNDAI’s new i10 is set to offer a dramatically different package when it is revealed to the world’s press at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. Hyundai, however, has released images of the new car. More refined than before, more athletic, visually totally different and with significantly revised dimensions, the next-generation Hyundai i10 will offer even more value than before.

Hyundai promises ‘generous levels of equipment, space and functionality c o u p l e d w i t h s o p h i s t i c a t e d design, ref ined ride qualities and a quiet cabin’ with the new i10, and on the surface of things it’s a car that may just deliver. This will also set d

new levels of ‘true value’ for Hyundai. Top-notch safety and comfort equipment will feature, including automatic climate control, heated leather steering wheel, cruise control with speed limiter, stability control and front and curtain airbags.

The new i10 gets notably longer (80mm), wider (60mm) and lower (50mm) than its predecessor and best-in-class legroom and cargo capacity is on the cards. The car is also built on a new platform that’s slightly longer than before and features relocated dampers that deliver more precise wheel control over varying road surfaces. NVH levels, too, ought to be more refined than before.

FORD Motor Company is increasing production of the critically acclaimed new Fiesta ST hot hatch after receiving twice as many orders as expectedin Europe in its first six months on sale.

Ford has received nearly 10,000 orders for the new Fiesta ST since it went on sale in March. To help meet demand, Ford is increasing production by 15 % to 60 vehicles per day at the company's assembly plant in Cologne, Germany. Demand for Ford's new Fiesta ST has been driven by customers in the U.K., who have purchased 56 % of all models sold in Europe to date, followed by Germany and Switzerland, with these three markets accounting for more than 87 % of European sales.

The last envelope has been opened, the last vote tallied, and we have a winner. The first Pirelli South African Bike of the Year was announced this week, at the opening day of the AMID motorcycle expo at Nasrec in Johannesburg. This new award, organised by Mat Durrans and Harry Fisher of The Bike Show and involving thirteen members of the South African motorcycling media and professional riders, pitted 16 new-for-2013 models against each other for the overall title.

The finalists, chosen from nominations by the official importers, were:

While it may seem unfair to compare a KTM 1190 Adventure with a Triumph Daytona 675R and a Suzuki GW250 Inazuma, each bike was rated on its own

merits and against previous versions of that model, not against any other machine in the competition.

The judges voted for their top six bikes, best first, and then points were awarded in the order 10, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 for first to sixth place. These p o i n t s w e r e to ta l led and a winner declared.

The judging process took part over two days.

Day one was at Midvaal Raceway; a track venue was used, not to see how fast the bikes could lap the circuit, but as a controlled environment where each member of the panel could ride every bike and assess it over the same piece of tarmac.

Day two saw the bikes being ridden on the open road from the Vaal dam to Magalies where a 10km loop of open roads had been marked out for further assessment.

The final scoring was a very close-run thing between the BMW R1200GS Liquid Cooled and the KTM 1190 Adventure, and the result was in doubt until the last vote had been counted.

But in the end there can be only one - and that one is the BMW, with the KTM a very worthy second and the Triumph Daytona 675R third, while the MV Agusta Brutale 800, Kawasaki Z800 and Moto Guzzi California 1400 rounded out the top six.

TOYOTA SA has rounded-off its Land Cruiser range with the addition of a whopping 4461cc, V8, intercooled, turbodiesel engine - sharing the launch hoo-hah with the similar introduction of an upgraded FJ Cruiser.

Having proved themselves over and over again as the vehicle of choice when the going gets seriously tough Toyota's Land Cruiser 70 range has now been capped, for the time being at least, with this giant mill.

When a vehicle carries the mantle of 'Masters of Africa' - and has done since 1971 when they first arrived in the South African market - I guess they deserve some bragging rights and this latest model does it in some style. With 151kW at 3400 rpm and 430Nm at only 1200rpm it has the flattest torque curve of all Toyota's current range of engines.

By way of comparison this latest model offers 55kW more power and 145Nm more torque than the non-turbo, indirect-injection, 4.2-litre, straight-six diesel found in other Land Cruisers.

Apparently customer feedback suggested a more powerful engine was needed. Listening to them, Toyota decided a lusty new V8 was just what the doctor ordered. Little has changed in the looks department - still the same tough-looking workhorse, if the truth be known, but now sporting a small V8 badge on the tailgate, a hood bulge to accept the water-cooled intercooler and the addition of an external snorkel-type air-cleaning system bolted along the front wing and running high up on the driver's side windscreen frame.

That's it - very few other additional frills needed to make this particular Land Cruiser even more desirable to those who hanker after this type of vehicle... and there's a lot of people out there who swear by them - how else can you account for a waiting list that totals 1242 at last count?

It was only fair to put this newcomer through its paces on a 4x4 track - it almost seemed a futile exercise in a way because the Land Cruiser's abilities to 'devour' anything thrown at it is legendary. The steepest dirt climbs, the largest potholes and toughest bush tracks were all climbed out of, up and down with aplomb. Even novice 4x4 motoring hacks like me looked good!

Very little has changed inside the cab, a tweak here and a tweak there with one noticeable exception: the Land Cruiser has definitely moved into the 21st century with the addition of a new audio and navigation system. But someone in the design studio obviously has a sense of humour because the aerial fitted is a throwback to the 1970's: press a button on the dashboard and a chromed five-piece sectioned antenna rises from the mudguard!

Hit the button again and it gently lowers! As a token to modernity, though, there's now a large display screen in the centre of the dash, there's smartphone connectivity and even SMS functionality. Going on a trip to Mozambique (as one does), no problem, it's now mapped - along with Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland.

All new Land Cruiser 70 models come with Toyota's comprehensive three-year/100 000 km warranty. These models are also supported by the ToyotaCare Roadside Assistance Programme and entitles customers to 24-hour roadside assistance.

AMERICANS are keeping their cars and trucks longer and, even with new car sales increasing, the average age will continue to rise.

The average age of the 247-million cars and trucks on US roads hit a record 11.4 years in January 2013, the latest figures available from state registration data gathered by the research firm Polk. That’s up from 11.2 in 2012 and nearly two years older than back in 2007, before the start of the Great Recession.

Polk's Mark Seng said: "People are keeping their cars because their quality is so much better; they're trying to avoid monthly payments. The annual percentage of cars and trucks sent to a scrapyard has dropped by half since the recession. “Cars are just lasting longer.”

The company doesn’t see the age dropping for at least five years, even though US vehicle sales are running at an annual rate of around 15.5-million - near pre-recession levels - and it predicts that the percentage of cars 12 years or older will rise in the next five years.

The change creates a big opportunity for repair shops and auto-parts stores.

Seng added: “Customers from independent and chain repair shops should be paying close attention to their business plans and making concerted efforts to retain business among the do-it-for-me audience. Retailers have a unique and growing opportunity with potential consumers working on their own vehicles.”

US sales have risen gradually from a 30-year low of 10.4-million in 2009 because of low interest rates, appealing new models and pent-up demand as people replace aging vehicles kept through the recession. The sales rebound prompted Polk to raise its estimate of the total number of vehicles on US roads by five percent to more than 260-million in five years.

But Seng said many people would keep their older car running longer; he can’t remember another time that the average age had grown as quickly.

The increase in average age will slow in the coming years but won’t start falling until new-car sales rise and stay high for several years. Older vehicles would have to be scrapped at a higher rate, as well, he said. “With the quality of the vehicles, that’s not going to happen.”

More people also are financing cars for 72 months, meaning they’ll keep their cars for at least six years, probably longer, Seng said.
