Pastor’s Letter July 4/5 Dear Parish Family, Summer is a special season here at Sacred Hearts. The beauty of our church and the wonderful setting of Southampton can seem magical. The generosity of our year round families and friends and summer visitors has maintained the basilica and supported the work that goes on within its walls. As we prepare for our annual Summer Appeal collection next week, I want to tell you about some important opportunities for the growth of our ministries this year. Here at Sacred Hearts, the work of ministry should be just as beautiful as our basilica church. First of all, our parish has a unique opportunity this year to partner with Catholic Charities in the development of a parish social ministry. This ministry will help us to reach out to the many people who depend on our parish. Our seniors, our homebound parishioners, those in hospitals and nursing homes rely on their faith community for assistance with a variety of needs. A parish social ministry coordinator will help to involve all of us and most especially our young people in the call of the gospel to care for the least of our brothers and sisters. On the subject of youth ministry, our parish is continuing its efforts to develop an active ministry for our high school and college students. We hope to do more this year with the youth ministry team that provides our Confirmation retreat. We are also hoping to have the services of a youth minister for our young parishioners. Finally, the largest growing body of parishioners is our Spanish Apostolate. Under the direction of Fr. Trench, Sacred Hearts was the founding church for this ministry and is still the center for their spiritual and educational efforts on behalf of our Spanish speaking Catholics. Fr. Steve and Fr. Marvin, two Vincentian priests who live at the Vincentian house here in Southampton, are tireless in their ministry which extends from Riverhead to Montauk. They drive over 250 miles a week to keep up with the spiritual needs of this community. This year six parishes, including our own, are collaborating to secure the services of a third Vincentian priest in this ministry. None of these opportunities would be possible without your generous support. In your generosity to the Summer Appeal, please keep in mind that our parish is a center of life not only in the summer but in every season of the year and in the most joyful and sorrowful times of people’s lives. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Did you know... about Bernard Nathanson, MD, abortion proponent turned Pro-Life? Dr. Nathanson was a New York City

Obstetrician-Gynecologist who, in the 1960's, ran the largest freestanding abortion clinic in the world, and was a

founding member of the National Abortion Rights Action League, or NARAL. He presided over more than 60,000

abortions, doing thousands himself. In the late 1970's, in part because of the availability of improved ultrasound imaging,

he began to question the morality of his actions, and completely changed his mind, becoming an outspoken opponent of

abortion. He wrote extensively on the subject, including a book titled "The Hand of God: A Journey from Death to Life". In

1996, he converted from Judaism, and became Catholic, being Baptized by John Cardinal O'Connor. He always

emphasized that he came to Catholicism after he became convinced that abortion was wrong -- not because the Church

said so; he was attracted in great part because one could find forgiveness in the Catholic church. Dr. Nathanson died at

the age of 84, and was buried from St. Patrick's Cathedral, in New York City.

Sunday’s readings make it clear: It isn’t easy being a follower of Jesus. It isn’t even

easy being Jesus. St. Paul certainly knew that, as did the prophets before and since him.

If you want a job where people are likely to reject you and your message, answer God’s

call: “Hard of face and obstinate of heart are they to whom I am sending you.” Never-

theless, that is not just the call of ancient times, but our call, too. Whether it’s Pope

Francis addressing those who put profit over people and the Earth, our local bishops

calling for immigration reform, or you advocating for greater gun control in a gun-

loving nation, be prepared to be ignored, refuted, or rebuked. But most of all, be pre-

pared to stand strong in your faithfulness to the One who sends you.

Dear Friends,

Joseph believes his involvement in Youth Ministry has been one of the most important inspira-

tions in his life.

Your donation to the Catholic Ministries Appeal ensures that young people like Joseph have an

opportunity to connect with Catholic Youth Ministry programs throughout Long Island. Here they

can develop a relationship with God that will lead to a life of prayer and service, coupled with the

support and socialization of other young people who embrace the same Church and values.

“Youth Ministry changed my life. I would not be the same person

without Youth Ministry; it molded me. I tell everyone the way to be

the best you can be is to give yourself fully to your Faith and soak up

everything you can from your Parish Youth Ministry experience,”

shared Joseph

More than 6,000 young people participate in Youth Ministry Programs in our Diocese.

The Catholic Ministries Appeal is also important for so many other ministries and programs that

help our children grow in our faith, including religious education programs for more than 100,000

of our young people in public schools as well as Campus and young adult ministry programs.

Your support helps to inspire our young people to live and love their faith.

Please know that I thank you most sincerely for your consideration of this special request to make

a gift to the 2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Please know that no gift is too small and every

gift makes a difference in the lives of our young people.
