SYD FRI 0308 MOVIE TIMES 14 ARTS THE AUSTRALIAN, FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2012 www.theaustralian.com.au NEW RELEASES Cosmopolis (MA15+) Based on the 2003 novel by Don DeLillo and directed by David Cronenberg, Cosmopolis centres on Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson). As the film opens Packer enters the palatial limo in which he will spend most of the next 108 minutes. Is the action really happening or is it only taking place inside Packer’s head? This film reaches a crescendo in the powerful final sequence featuring Paul Giamatti, which gives Cosmopolis something it could otherwise be accused of lacking: a heart, one found in an unexpected place. STEPHEN ROMEI Beauty (R18+) This powerful drama — said to be the first South African film screened at Cannes — is the story of Francois (Deon Lotz), a devoted family man whose denial of his true sexuality leads to horrific emotional turmoil when he becomes obsessed with an attractive younger man (Charlie Keegan). With an intense and finely disciplined performance from Lotz, director Oliver Hermanus has made one of the year’s most moving and disturbing films, though audiences may find certain scenes almost too painful to watch. EVAN WILLIAMS NSW STAGE A Hoax Two overlapping voices ring out at the start of Rick Viede’s play A Hoax, their shared story blurring the lines between fact and fiction. High school dropout Miri Smith (Shari Sebbens) has arrived at a hotel to play the role of Currah, the indigenous face of a ‘‘misery memoir’’ dreamed up by white social worker Anthony Dooley (Glenn Hazeldine). Veteran literary agent Ronnie Lowe (Sally McKenzie) thinks she’s on a winner, as does her flamboyant African-American assistant Tyrelle (Charles Allen), who sees something of his own struggle in Currah’s manuscript. Directed by Lee Lewis, Viede’s Griffin Award- winning work had its world premiere in Brisbane. The play explores how suffering might be misappropriated for material gain, particularly when the protagonist is Aboriginal. CAMERON PEGG SBW Stables Theatre. 10 Nimrod Street, Kings Cross. Tonight, 7pm. Tickets: $49. Bookings: 9361 3817. Until September 1. OPERA AND CLASSICAL Dazzling Virtuoso The keyed trumpet is an instrument whose time in the limelight was fleeting, yet it had a revolutionary impact in the late 18th century. By putting holes into a trumpet and covering them with keys, the range and capacity of the instrument was extended. Gabriele Cassone is a leading exponent of the instrument and his tour with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra is its debut in Australia. On first hearing, the keyed trumpet is certainly not as bright as the modern trumpet, nor does it have the same penetrating clarity. The trumpet concertos of Haydn and Hummel are two of the most famous in the repertory. It was a clever move to program them in this concert as both were originally written for this instrument. Despite occasional missed notes and intonation problems, for the most part Cassone maintained an even timbre across his range. MURRAY BLACK City Recital Hall. 2 Angel Place, Sydney. Tonight, 7pm. Tickets: $61-$148. Bookings: (02) 8256 2222. Ends tomorrow. ACT CABARET Make Me a King Don’t be deceived by the hair- straightened promo image in which Paul Capsis looks as if he’s channelling Tom Petty. The closest we get to rock ’n’ roll are ballads by REM and the Velvet Underground that Capsis sings as himself. Along with his channelling of Billie Holiday in her younger years, Capsis is at his most memorable in a song about his Maltese nonna Angela. It has the velvety torque and authority Grace Jones shows when singing about her Williams blood. CHRIS BOYD The Street Theatre. 15 Childers Street, Canberra. Tonight, 8pm. Tickets: $39. Bookings: (02) 6247 1223. Wagner, blues and love letters from the front MUSIC Christine Brewer Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre, August 1. Soprano Christine Brewer Brewer evoked the song’s melancholy with an evenly rounded tone A WEEK before she delivers a hearty program of Wagner in Sydney, renowned American dramatic soprano Christine Brewer gave Melbourne audiences a taste of the intimate art-song recital format that has become this decidedly operatic singer’s stock in trade. A natural Wagnerian and Straussian soprano, with abundant power and a well- supported, plush middle register, Brewer has selected recital repertoire typically performed by artists with lighter, more agile voice types. Despite Brewer’s admirable ability to exercise vocal restraint, the results of this experiment are not entirely successful. The first half best demonstrated the singer’s distinctive vocal abilities. Eschewing the familiar orchestrated version of Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder in favour of the sparser piano accompaniment originals, Brewer realised the collection’s intense imagery and sharp dramatic contrasts with artless fluency and striking pathos. An expansively phrased account of Im Treibhaus was mesmerising, as Brewer evoked the song’s melancholy with an evenly rounded tone, superb breath control and remarkable stillness. Contemporary American song followed with Alan Smith’s Letters from George to Evelyn,a cycle built around extracts from a soldier’s homeward correspondence to his young bride. The work’s interest lies in its textual dramatisation, the melodic material alternating between sympathetic amplification of the words and marked expressive contrast: the latter adding an interesting level of abstraction. The cycle’s tragic arc proved a terrific vehicle for Brewer, parlante sections making way for lyrical pastoral scenes, agitated depictions of war’s horrors and lyrical declarations of love either side of a brutally direct telegram announcing in shrill, staccato monotone the soldier’s death in action. Vocally powerful with moments of real beauty, this performance commanded attention. After interval, the focus turned to Britten’s Cabaret Songs, tunes by Harold Arlen (of Wizard of Oz fame), and a selection of 20th- century American and British art songs. Affable and engaging, Brewer showed clear enthusiasm for this repertoire. However, the Britten songs proved ill-suited to her timbre and range, making heavy demands on her underwhelming lower register and harsher upper register. More successful was her delivery of Arlen’s blues-infused numbers: less supple and alluring than celebrated jazz accounts but possessing remarkable gravitas and intensity. Particularly effective was a grand, sweeping account of the soulful I Had Myself a True Love from St Louis Woman. The final collection of art songs saw Brewer return to a more operatic style and, with this, a more attractive, even tone. The standout here was a dreamy account of Paul Sargent’s Hickory Hill: reliable associate artist Anthony Legge delivered the song’s glittering accompaniment with fluent delicacy as Brewer sustained each phrase with extraordinary ease. EAMONN KELLY Christine Brewer performs with Simone Young and the Sydney Symphony on August 9, 10 and 11 Cultural hub rises from the rubble An Australia-Japan collaboration has enlivened locals RICK WALLACE Artist Brook Andrew with his installation Mountain Home — Dhirrayn Ngurang, above; the new Australia House at Urada, left PICTURES: BRETT BOARDMAN ‘The local community really wants people to engage here’ BROOK ANDREW ARTIST A SAKE-SOAKED party with a karaoke performance from a 77-year-old villager. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting opening for the new Australia House in rural Japan — a cultural project de- signed to foster collaboration be- tween locals and resident Austra- lians artists — than finishing the ceremony with a folk song from the nearest neighbour. Gombe-san’s deep crooning baritone filled the valley, resound- ing out over nearby paddy fields in this mountain region. It was no surprise to learn he had won nu- merous karaoke titles. Australian artist Brook An- drew and architect Andrew Burns, who collaborated closely on the house design, got to know Gombe-san during the trips they made to the tiny town of Urada, about 250km northwest of Tokyo, and insisted he be part of the opening ceremony last weekend. At the ceremony, which coincided with the opening of the 2012 Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, a sprawling contemporary arts fes- tival that has given this beautiful part of Japan new energy amid stark population decline, there was a sense of goodwill and frater- nity among those involved, along with a sense of relief. The old Australia House was flattened when an earthquake last March — the day after the devas- tating magnitude 9 temblor and tsunami — destroyed buildings in the area and injured locals. The building, a 100-year-old Japanese farmhouse, collapsed under the shaking from the quake and the weight of heavy snow. A rapid commitment to rebuild from the Tokamachi and Austra- lian governments dispelled fears that the project, a symbol of Japan and Australia’s cultural ties, would be abandoned. A design competition was an- nounced to find an architect and Andrew, a leading Australian tal- ent, was selected as the inaugural exhibiting artist. Throwing an artist and archi- tect together and asking them col- laborate on a difficult and cul- turally sensitive project with a tight budget and 11-month time- frame sounds like the formula for a reality television show. But An- drew and Burns, along with An- drew Rewald, the next artist in residence, have formed tight friendships with each other and with locals. ‘‘It was completely natural,’’ Andrew says. ‘‘Before Andrew even knew I was the artist, An- drew said he would really like to work with me, even though we had never met before. It’s kind of been fate, I think, and we are working on another project together. Maybe it’s the beginning flourishing collaboration.’’ Andrew’s installation, Moun- tain Home — Dhirrayn Ngurang, combines a black-and-white radial diamond pattern drawn from his Wiradjuri heritage with neon, another favourite element of his work. It sits on a flat panel in the main gallery space in the house and can be folded out to stand opposite a mirrored wall. ‘‘I am very interested in hidden histories and the unknown, and different perspectives and percep- tions,’’ says Andrew, who is also of Scottish heritage. The white neon message on the panel is a haiku poem written by Andrew after he interviewed lo- cals. ‘‘The mountains are very im- portant to them and it’s a very harsh climate in the winter,’’ he says. ‘‘The children are going away and the local Urada school is clos- ing this year; there are only eight students left. ‘‘And it’s quite a struggle be- cause of the earthquake.’’ The haiku that encapsulates these sentiments can be read only when the viewer looks at its reflec- tion on the mirrored wall, a move aimed at drawing the observer into the work and hence the lives of locals. In red neon, Andrew has placed an invitation to the viewer to sit and drink tea. ‘‘One of the lessons that came through was the local community really wants people to engage here,’’ he says. ‘‘They don’t want it just to be a tourist attraction where people just take a photo and don’t engage with the people.’’ Burns entered the competition with a design he thought would appeal to the chief judge, leading architect Tadao Ando, whom he counts as an inspiration. When his entry was chosen from 154 com- petitors, Burns had less than a year to complete the project. The Sydney-based architect says he quickly realised during a site visit in January that he would have to change the design to make it suitable for a site where up to 1.5m of snow can accumulate in a single day. ‘‘We met with the local community and they said the orig- inal design won’t work with the snow,’’ he says. ‘‘The whole design had to be rejigged so that angular section of roof sloped towards a gully to minimise the snow clear- ing cost and effort.’’ Burns designed the house with a traditional daikoku-bashira, or central pillar, made from a single cedar tree. The house is con- structed almost wholly from mill- ed cedar and has a birch floor. The colour of the wood gives the in- terior a warm, airy feel in contrast to the rakish lines and charcoal colour of the exterior. He describes the collaboration with Andrew as effortless. Rare misunderstandings ended up shaping the project for the better. For example, Burns placed two identical works inside and out in his graphic model of the gallery space he was designing that An- drew mistook for a reflection. ‘‘That’s how reflection came into the discussion and entered as a concept,’’ Burns says. ‘‘The ideal is when two sets of ideas come together and create something new and it just explodes. It was an amazing process: where does the architecture finish and the (art) work begin? You can’t tell because that line has been smashed. And I hope that continues with other permanent works here.’’ Burns is an admirer of Japanese architects. He engaged Souhei Imamura and Sotaro Yamamoto to oversee the construction and add detail to ensure it was built within the tight timeline. Australian ambassador Bruce Miller hopes the new Australia House replicates the spirit of its predecessor, which hosted its first resident artist in 2009. ‘‘The house was built at a most remarkable speed and we are all most de- lighted by that,’’ he says. ‘‘But of course for it to become a genuine and long-term centre for Japan- Australia cultural exchange it will need more than a building. It will need a lot of people to come and positively contribute to what’s go- ing on here.’’ His predecessor, Murray McLean, now heads the Australia- Japan Foundation, which helped fund the project along with the Tokamachi City government and the embassy. ‘‘The principle of the design for Australia House was that it had to be robust and resili- ent and that is what the Australia- Japan relationship is all about.’’

NEW RELEASES

Cosmopolis (MA15+)Based on the 2003 novel by DonDeLillo and directed by DavidCronenberg, Cosmopolis centreson Eric Packer (RobertPattinson). As the film opensPacker enters the palatial limo inwhich he will spend most of thenext 108 minutes. Is the actionreally happening or is it onlytaking place inside Packer’shead? This film reaches acrescendo in the powerful finalsequence featuring PaulGiamatti, which givesCosmopolis something it couldotherwise be accused of lacking: aheart, one found in anunexpected place.

STEPHEN ROMEI

Beauty (R18+)This powerful drama — said to bethe first South African filmscreened at Cannes — is the storyof Francois (Deon Lotz), adevoted family man whose denialof his true sexuality leads tohorrific emotional turmoil whenhe becomes obsessed with anattractive younger man (CharlieKeegan). With an intense andfinely disciplined performancefrom Lotz, director OliverHermanus has made one of theyear’s most moving anddisturbing films, thoughaudiences may find certainscenes almost too painful towatch.

OPERA ANDCLASSICALDazzling VirtuosoThe keyed trumpet is aninstrument whose time in thelimelight was fleeting, yet it had arevolutionary impact in the late18th century. By putting holesinto a trumpet and covering themwith keys, the range and capacityof the instrument was extended.Gabriele Cassone is a leadingexponent of the instrument andhis tour with the AustralianBrandenburg Orchestra is itsdebut in Australia. On firsthearing, the keyed trumpet iscertainly not as bright as themodern trumpet, nor does it havethe same penetrating clarity. Thetrumpet concertos of Haydn andHummel are two of the mostfamous in the repertory. It was aclever move to program them inthis concert as both wereoriginally written for thisinstrument. Despite occasionalmissed notes and intonationproblems, for the most partCassone maintained an eventimbre across his range.

Wagner, blues and loveletters from the front

Soprano Christine Brewer

Brewer evoked thesong’s melancholywith an evenlyrounded tone

A WEEK before she delivers ahearty program of Wagner inSydney, renowned Americandramatic soprano ChristineBrewer gave Melbourneaudiences a taste of the intimateart-song recital format that hasbecome this decidedly operaticsinger’s stock in trade.

A natural Wagnerian andStraussian soprano, withabundant power and a well-supported, plush middle register,Brewer has selected recitalrepertoire typically performed byartists with lighter, more agilevoice types. Despite Brewer’sadmirable ability to exercisevocal restraint, the results of thisexperiment are not entirelysuccessful.

The first half bestdemonstrated the singer’sdistinctive vocal abilities.Eschewing the familiarorchestrated version of Wagner’sWesendonck Lieder in favour ofthe sparser pianoaccompaniment originals,Brewer realised the collection’sintense imagery and sharpdramatic contrasts with artlessfluency and striking pathos. Anexpansively phrased account ofIm Treibhaus was mesmerising,as Brewer evoked the song’smelancholy with an evenlyrounded tone, superb breathcontrol and remarkable stillness.

Contemporary Americansong followed with Alan Smith’sLetters from George to Evelyn, acycle built around extracts from asoldier’s homewardcorrespondence to his youngbride. The work’s interest lies inits textual dramatisation, themelodic material alternatingbetween sympatheticamplification of the words andmarked expressive contrast: thelatter adding an interesting levelof abstraction.

The cycle’s tragic arc proved aterrific vehicle for Brewer, parlante sections making way forlyrical pastoral scenes, agitateddepictions of war’s horrors andlyrical declarations of love eitherside of a brutally direct telegramannouncing in shrill, staccatomonotone the soldier’s death inaction. Vocally powerful with

moments of real beauty, thisperformance commandedattention.

After interval, the focus turnedto Britten’s Cabaret Songs, tunesby Harold Arlen (of Wizard of Ozfame), and a selection of 20th-century American and British artsongs.

Affable and engaging, Brewershowed clear enthusiasm for thisrepertoire. However, the Brittensongs proved ill-suited to hertimbre and range, making heavydemands on her underwhelminglower register and harsher upperregister. More successful was herdelivery of Arlen’s blues-infusednumbers: less supple and alluringthan celebrated jazz accounts butpossessing remarkable gravitasand intensity. Particularlyeffective was a grand, sweepingaccount of the soulful I HadMyself a True Love from St LouisWoman.

The final collection of artsongs saw Brewer return to amore operatic style and, with this,a more attractive, even tone.

The standout here was adreamy account of Paul Sargent’sHickory Hill: reliable associateartist Anthony Legge deliveredthe song’s glitteringaccompaniment with fluentdelicacy as Brewer sustainedeach phrase with extraordinaryease.

A SAKE-SOAKED party with akaraoke performance from a77-year-old villager. It’s hard toimagine a more fitting opening forthe new Australia House in ruralJapan — a cultural project de-signed to foster collaboration be-tween locals and resident Austra-lians artists — than finishing theceremony with a folk song fromthe nearest neighbour.

Gombe-san’s deep crooningbaritone filled the valley, resound-ing out over nearby paddy fields inthis mountain region. It was nosurprise to learn he had won nu-merous karaoke titles.

Australian artist Brook An-drew and architect Andrew Burns, who collaborated closely on thehouse design, got to knowGombe-san during the trips theymade to the tiny town of Urada, about 250km northwest of Tokyo, and insisted he be part of theopening ceremony last weekend. At the ceremony, which coincidedwith the opening of the 2012Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, asprawling contemporary arts fes-tival that has given this beautifulpart of Japan new energy amidstark population decline, therewas a sense of goodwill and frater-nity among those involved, alongwith a sense of relief.

The old Australia House wasflattened when an earthquake lastMarch — the day after the devas-tating magnitude 9 temblor andtsunami — destroyed buildings inthe area and injured locals. Thebuilding, a 100-year-old Japanesefarmhouse, collapsed under theshaking from the quake and theweight of heavy snow.

A rapid commitment to rebuildfrom the Tokamachi and Austra-lian governments dispelled fearsthat the project, a symbol of Japanand Australia’s cultural ties, wouldbe abandoned.

A design competition was an-nounced to find an architect andAndrew, a leading Australian tal-ent, was selected as the inauguralexhibiting artist.

Throwing an artist and archi-tect together and asking them col-laborate on a difficult and cul-turally sensitive project with atight budget and 11-month time-frame sounds like the formula fora reality television show. But An-

drew and Burns, along with An-drew Rewald, the next artist inresidence, have formed tightfriendships with each other andwith locals.

‘‘It was completely natural,’’Andrew says. ‘‘Before Andreweven knew I was the artist, An-drew said he would really like towork with me, even though wehad never met before. It’s kind ofbeen fate, I think, and we are

working on another projecttogether. Maybe it’s the beginningflourishing collaboration.’’

Andrew’s installation, Moun-tain Home — Dhirrayn Ngurang, combines a black-and-whiteradial diamond pattern drawnfrom his Wiradjuri heritage withneon, another favourite elementof his work. It sits on a flat panel inthe main gallery space in thehouse and can be folded out to

stand opposite a mirrored wall.‘‘I am very interested in hidden

histories and the unknown, anddifferent perspectives and percep-tions,’’ says Andrew, who is also ofScottish heritage.

The white neon message on thepanel is a haiku poem written byAndrew after he interviewed lo-cals. ‘‘The mountains are very im-portant to them and it’s a veryharsh climate in the winter,’’ hesays. ‘‘The children are going awayand the local Urada school is clos-ing this year; there are only eightstudents left.

‘‘And it’s quite a struggle be-cause of the earthquake.’’

The haiku that encapsulatesthese sentiments can be read onlywhen the viewer looks at its reflec-tion on the mirrored wall, a moveaimed at drawing the observerinto the work and hence the livesof locals.

In red neon, Andrew has placedan invitation to the viewer to sitand drink tea.

‘‘One of the lessons that came

through was the local communityreally wants people to engagehere,’’ he says. ‘‘They don’t want itjust to be a tourist attractionwherepeople just takeaphotoanddon’t engage with the people.’’

Burns entered the competitionwith a design he thought wouldappeal to the chief judge, leadingarchitect Tadao Ando, whom hecounts as an inspiration. When hisentry was chosen from 154 com-petitors,Burnshad less thanayearto complete the project.

The Sydney-based architectsays he quickly realised during asite visit in January that he wouldhave to change the design to makeit suitable for a site where up to1.5m of snow can accumulate in asingle day. ‘‘We met with the localcommunityand theysaid theorig-inal design won’t work with thesnow,’’ he says. ‘‘The whole designhad to be rejigged so that angularsection of roof sloped towards agully to minimise the snow clear-ing cost and effort.’’

Burns designed the house with

a traditional daikoku-bashira, orcentral pillar, made from a singlecedar tree. The house is con-structed almost wholly from mill-ed cedar and has a birch floor. Thecolour of the wood gives the in-terior a warm, airy feel in contrastto the rakish lines and charcoalcolour of the exterior.

He describes the collaborationwith Andrew as effortless. Raremisunderstandings ended upshaping the project for the better. For example, Burns placed twoidentical works inside and out inhis graphic model of the galleryspace he was designing that An-drew mistook for a reflection.

‘‘That’s how reflection cameinto the discussion and entered asa concept,’’ Burns says. ‘‘The idealis when two sets of ideas cometogether and create somethingnew and it just explodes. It was anamazing process: where does thearchitecture finish and the (art)work begin? You can’t tell becausethat line has been smashed. And Ihope that continues with otherpermanent works here.’’

Burns is an admirer of Japanesearchitects. He engaged SouheiImamura and Sotaro Yamamototo oversee the construction andadd detail to ensure it was builtwithin the tight timeline.

Australian ambassador BruceMiller hopes the new AustraliaHouse replicates the spirit of itspredecessor, which hosted its firstresident artist in 2009. ‘‘The housewas built at a most remarkablespeed and we are all most de-lighted by that,’’ he says. ‘‘But ofcourse for it to become a genuineand long-term centre for Japan-Australia cultural exchange it willneed more than a building. It willneed a lot of people to come andpositively contribute to what’s go-ing on here.’’

His predecessor, MurrayMcLean, now heads theAustralia-Japan Foundation, which helpedfund the project along with theTokamachi City government andthe embassy. ‘‘The principle of thedesign for Australia House wasthat it had to be robust and resili-ent and that is what the Australia-Japan relationship is all about.’’
