reetings to alumni and friends of UT’s Department of Accounting and Information Manage-ment (AIM). Fall is an exciting time here at the University of Tennessee. New students arrive, existing students return and football begins. Fall also is always a busy time for AIM. We gear up for events including Warren Slagle Accounting Day, internship and full-time recruiting for our students, and our annual Master of Accountancy class trip to Washington, D.C.

AIM offers three programs – undergraduate, Master of Accountancy (MAcc), and doctorate (Ph.D.) – and all are essential to our mission. This summer we offered the inaugural version of our AIM Academy to encourage new undergrads.

Our MAcc program continues to excel. As of the end of June, 73 of the 75 students from the 2013-14 MAcc class were placed in professional positions, a 97 percent placement rate. We continue to work to improve the MAcc curriculum, with a particular focus on embedding more valuation content and offering a third track in information systems, in addition to our tracks in audit and tax.

Our Ph.D. program is very important to our national reputation and program rankings. We are proud of the quality of the program and its diversity. This fall, nearly 30 percent of our Ph.D. students will be members of underrepresented groups. Increasing the diversity of our students and faculty is an impor-tant goal of the university, one that AIM fully supports. During the 2013-2014 academic year, we had four students on the job market and are very pleased that all four accepted faculty positions at Ph.D. granting institutions.

Let me end by thanking all AIM alums and friends for your support – whether manifested by hiring our students (hire more, the product is amazing!), speaking in classes, serving on advisory boards and of course, contributing financially. Over the next few weeks, I will be participating in a number of socials sponsored by the Big 4, Dixon Hughes Goodman and LBMC, all in support of the Accounting Firm Challenge. I hope to see many of you at these events! For those I don’t see, I hope we can connect at our alumni reunion event on Oct. 3 and/or at Accounting Day on Oct. 4.

In MemoriamHarry N. Hughes 1946-2014

This summer brought some extremely sad news. Harry Hughes died in late July. Hughes was a part of AIM for nearly 40 years. He was a mainstay of the principles of accounting course. He served AIM in an administrative capacity and was

the “right hand” person for department heads dating back to Jack Kiger. He also served under Jan Williams, Keith Stanga, Dan Murphy, Bruce Behn and Joe Carcello. Hughes was known, if possible, even more for who he was than what he did. He is remembered for being always positive, cheerful and willing to help. Hughes won awards for teaching, customer responsiveness and for one of his favorites – concern for his students. On behalf of his AIM colleagues, faculty and staff throughout the college, he will be greatly missed.

Pershing Named UT’s 2014 Distinguished Accounting Alum

Ed Pershing, co-founder and president of Pershing Yoakley & Associates (PYA), has earned the 2014 Distinguished Accounting Alum Award from the Department of Accounting and Information Management in the College of Business Administration.

“Many alums have made outstanding contributions to the department since its inception in 1925, benefiting thousands of bright young students,” said Joe Carcello, department head.

“Distinguished Accounting Alum Award recipients have demonstrated the highest level of professional and personal excellence throughout their careers and have significantly improved the organizations and communities with which they have been associated.”

Pershing, who earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1974, and was the top accounting graduate, is known locally, regionally and nationally as an innovator and visionary in healthcare consulting. He has led PYA’s impressive growth from its founding in 1983 with three employees to its position today as one of the leading healthcare accounting and consulting firms in the United States. PYA serves healthcare clients in 48 states and the Virgin Islands. Modern Healthcare recently recognized it as one of the top 20 healthcare consulting firms in the nation.

Under Pershing’s leadership, PYA expanded its scope and created four affiliates to complement its core business lines: real estate development and advisory services, healthcare claims auditing for Fortune 500 companies, data analytics and wealth management.

“Pershing is a man of enormous integrity and strong principles, and he is an individual committed to excellence,” Carcello said. “We are honored to recognize him.”

Big Orange Family Campaign As part of the 100th anniversary celebration in the College of Business Administration, faculty and staff were asked to contribute to the university through the Big Orange Family Campaign. Ellen Anderson headed the effort for the AIM department, which achieved a 100 percent giving rate! Every one of AIM’s faculty and staff contributed. AIM appreciates its dedicated faculty and staff who believe in and give back to the department, the college and the university. Great job, everyone!

1-2-3 MAcc Pledge Every year, MAcc students are asked by their fellow MAcc students to sign a three-year pledge to support AIM. This year shattered the previous giving record with 92 percent of the gradu-ating MAcc class signing a three-year pledge agreement. The money given by MAcc students is used to fund MAcc scholarships and CPA preparation course software. Thank you, MAcc Class of 2014!

Student ProfilesThe success of our educational mission relies on the high-quality students who we attract into our baccalaureate and graduate programs. Our department traditionally has attracted top business students, and this year is no exception. To provide you with additional insight into our programs, we have profiled three of our outstanding students.

Justin Short, Doctoral CandidateJustin Short is a first-year doctoral student with

research interests in corporate governance and auditing. He is a Nashville, Tenn., native who earned his bachelor’s degree in 2011 and his Master of Accountancy degree in 2012, both from the Universi-ty of Tennessee. After completing the MAcc program, Short began his career with Ernst & Young in its Nash-ville office. He worked in its assurance service line for more than two years. Short audited companies in multiple industries including insurance, manufactur-ing, healthcare and utilities. He earned his Tennessee CPA license while working at Ernst & Young.

Short’s love for the academic environment moti-vated him to leave public accounting and return to

UT in the doctoral program. “There are few things on this earth more beautiful than a university,” Short said. He looks forward to his upcoming years in the doctoral program. Upon the recommendation of the Accounting Doctoral Committee, Short was des-ignated an ESPN Scholar for academic excellence by the College of Business Administration. He also was designated a KPMG scholar by the KPMG Foundation as part of its PhD Project program, and was awarded an AICPA minority doctoral scholarship. Short has as-pirations to become a professor at a major public re-search university where faculty are advocates for their students. He hopes to serve students in the same way the UT professors have served him.

Carly Sain, MAcc StudentCarly Sain is a Memphis, Tenn., native who

earned her undergraduate degree in accounting with a collateral in international business from the University of Tennessee. She was a UT cheer-leader and a member of Beta Alpha Psi. During the summer of 2013, Sain studied abroad in Bordeaux, France, as part of her international business curriculum. She attended PwC’s National Lead-ership Conference in Chicago. In May 2014, she traveled to Budapest, Hungary, with the 2013-14 MAcc class. During spring 2014, Sain completed an internship in the assurance practice of PwC’s

Boston office. She will return as a full-time employee of PwC in Boston after she completes the MAcc program in 2015.

As an undergraduate, Sain received the Depart-ment of Accounting and Information Management Commitment to Academic Excellence Award and also was awarded a scholarship from the American Society of Women Accountants, Knoxville Chap-ter. Sain will serve as a graduate teaching assistant while in the MAcc program. In addition to her accounting interests, Sain is an avid runner and enjoys spending time in Florida with her family.

Dana Parks, Undergraduate StudentDana Parks is a senior accounting major with

a collateral in information management. She plans to complete her undergraduate degree in December 2014 and pursue a Master of Accoun-tancy degree. Parks hails from Rocky Top, Tenn., formerly known as Lake City. She attended Ander-son County High School and was captain of the drum line, captain of the tennis team, a member of National Honors Society, and one of the top graduates of her class.

Parks graduated from the University of Tennes-

see in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a concentration in criminal justice, as well as a bachelor’s degree in theater with a minor in political science. She was the top graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Dean’s Student Advisory Council and the National Collegiate Honor Society. Parks returned to UT in 2012 to pursue a degree in accounting. When she is not in class or doing homework, she works as a 911 dispatcher for Anderson County Sheriff’s Depart-ment. She also is vice president of Beta Alpha Psi.

AIM Academy

The Department of Accounting and Information Management held its inaugural AIM Academy July 13-16. The three-day resi-dential program was designed

to expose rising high school seniors from historically underrepresented groups to accounting careers and the accounting curriculum at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

AIM hosted seven girls and seven boys from 12 high schoolsand seven cities in east and middle Tennessee through the program. The students participated in professional meetings with the Big 4 CPA firms and Dixon Hughes Good-man, where they received first-hand information on a variety of careers in accounting. AIM faculty led sessions to familiarize students with the College of Business Administration’s curriculum and the accounting major. Additional activities included a dinner with faculty and parents, tours of the campus and Neyland Stadium, bowling and a group picnic.

The program was a huge success, thanks primarily to the efforts of Izabela VanDeest. The department also wishes to offer special thanks to Deloitte, Dixon Hughes Goodman, EY, KPMG and PwC for covering the direct costs of the AIM Academy. Based on feedback received from the students and their parents, many of them plan to enter the undergraduate accounting program at UT.
