News from 5J

5J’s Gold Rush Excursion

This term, 5J went on an excursion to the Gympie Gold Museum. We went there to learn more

about what life was like during the 1800’s and reasons that people migrated to Australia, including

the Gold Rush.

Our informative guide took us to see the blacksmith, steam oven, toy museum and much more.

We learned how the blacksmith worked the forge and how he used the anvil to bend the metal into

shapes. We were able to see mining equipment that was used during the 1800’s and learn that

there is a more efficient way to dig for gold and other minerals today.

The toys were made mostly from wood, string and other natural materials and the look of them

was not like any of the toys that children use today. We went into an old-fashioned classroom and

learned about how the children lived and how different the women’s’ work was, compared to the

men. The women had to look after the family and the men had to start work in the mines at an

early age.

We also learned about how the miners panned for gold in the shaft tunnels. The shafts were very

deep and they were then extremely dangerous. Another type of mining they did was alluvial gold

mining. It was a lot safer than the shaft, as they were on top of the land but there wasn’t big

nuggets that they needed to survive in these ruthless environments.

We even got to have a go at a technique called panning, which was much harder than we thought!

Overall, our experience was very interesting as we learned about how miners and their families

lived during the Gold Rush Period.
