P R ES I D E NT’S M ESSAG EThe Canadian Society of Hand Therapists invites you to attend our 12th Annual Conference being held in Edmonton, Alberta on May 3rd and 4th, 2019 at the Robbins Pavillion of The Royal Alexandra Hospital. Our conference theme for 2019 is HAND THERAPY: A Practical Approach. The program focuses on practical solutions for complex clinical issues in hand rehabilitation and incorporates opportunities for hands-on learning.

Our Conference Committee has planned an exciting, enlightening program! We are pleased to announce that Canadian Plastic Surgeon Donald Lalonde, and, Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Therapist Dr. Kristin Valdes have agreed to be our Keynote Speakers. Dr. Lalonde is renowned for his development of the wide-awake local anaesthesia no tourniquet technique (WALANT) for the repair of flexor tendon injuries in the hand. He has shared his expertise around the globe having been an invited speaker more than 35 times in Canada and the US, and over 200 international presentations. Dr. Kristin Valdes has numerous publications in the Journal of Hand Therapy, Hand Magazine, Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, and The Journal of Physical Therapy Science. She currently serves as the past president of the American Society of Hand Therapists and also serves as an assistant editor for the Journal of Hand Therapy.

There will be a strong Canadian presence of invited speakers delivering oral presentations and interactive workshops. You are sure to benefit from our speakers’ breadth of knowledge and experience, and the variety of clinical topics.

We also invite you to share your innovative clinical practice inquiries and/or the results of your research on hand and upper extremity topics. Please review our call for abstracts and consider sharing your expertise.

KEYNOTE S P EAKE RS

Donald H. Lalonde, MD, BSc, MSc, FRCSC

Donald Lalonde is a professor in the division of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Dalhousie University in Saint John, New Brunswick. In 2009, he became the first Canadian plastic surgeon to be elected to chair the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is also a Past President of the American Association for Hand Surgery, Past President of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons, and Past Chairman of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) specialty committee of Plastic Surgery and the examination board in Plastic Surgery. He is an honorary member of the American Society of Hand Therapy. He serves as the ASSH Council Outreach and International Relations Director and is the President of the Canadian Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Dr. Lalonde has shared his expertise around the globe. He has been an invited visiting professor more than 35 times in Canada and the US, and has been an invited speaker to more than 200 international presentations. He has more than 100 peer reviewed journal publications and 30 book chapters. He is the editor of Wide Awake Hand Surgery, a surgeon’s (and therapist’s) guide to Wide Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet surgical technique, or WALANT. He was the 2017 Recipient of the F.N.G. Starr Award of the CMA, the highest award the Canadian Medical Association can bestow on one of its members.

Kristin Valdes, OTD, OT, CHT

Kristin Valdes is the Capstone Coordinator and an assistant professor at Gannon University in Ruskin, Florida. She is the Immediate Past President of the American Society of Hand Therapists. She was in private practice for over thirty years and specialized in the treatment and rehabilitation of the upper extremity. Her clinical expertise includes treatment of the hand, wrist, and elbow, shoulder, splinting, and arthritis. Dr. Valdes has published over thirty peer-reviewed studies. She received her OTD degree with a specialization in hand rehabilitation from Rocky Mountain University of Health Care Professions in Provo, Utah. Dr Valdes is member of the Guatemala Healing Hands Medical Mission.

Brandon Ball MD FRCS(C)Hailing from rural central Alberta, Dr. Ball brings to each one of his patients a work ethic and sense of dedication honed from years of working on his family farm. Dr. Ball attended medical school and completed his plastic surgery residency training at the University of Alberta. He subsequently underwent advanced fellowship training at the University of Western Ontario’s Hand and Upper Limb Centre. Dr. Ball was then promptly recruited back to Edmonton where he is currently a Clinical Lecturer with the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Alberta and the newly appointed Program Director for the University of Alberta Plastic Surgery Residency program.Dr. Ball is a member of the Alberta Medical Association, Albertan and Canadian Societies of Plastic Surgeons and is board-certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.When not striving to keep his patients happy and healthy, he’s enjoying a wide assortment of outdoor activities with his wife and their four children.

Judy Chepeha PhD, PTDr. Judy Chepeha graduated from the University of Alberta in 1989 with a Bachleor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy, 1997 with a Master’s of Science in Rehabilitation Medicine and 2011 with a PhD in Rehabilitation Science. She worked clinically at the Glen Sather University of Alberta Sports Medicine Clinic in the area of orthopedics and sports medicine for 18 years. Dr. Chepeha has been a full time Clinical Track Professor with the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Alberta since 2006 primarily teaching orthopedics and sports physical therapy.Dr. Chepeha is a member of SURGE – Shoulder and Upper Extremity Research Group of Edmonton. Her major research interests are shoulder and upper extremity assessment and rehabilitation, specifically for individuals with rotator cuff pathology and instability syndromes; the development of post-operative rehabilitation guidelines; and the overhead athletes shoulder – in particular the adaptive rotation pattern and its relationship to injury incidence.

Shrikant J. Chinchalkar M.Th.O, B.Sc.OT, OTR, CHTShrikant Chinchalkar worked as a hand therapist at the Roth-McFarlane Hand & Upper Limb Centre, St. Joseph’s Health Centre in London, Ontario, Canada for 26 years. He has over 45 years of clinical experience in treating upper extremity conditions and over 35 years of teaching experience. He designed and developed Hand Therapy programs at four major teaching centers in Canada including Roth-McFarlane Hand & Upper Limb Centre in London, Ontario. In addition, he designed WSIB Specialty, Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve Injury, Elbow and Wrist Rehabilitation, and Hand Therapy Fellowship programs at this center. He conducted many instructional courses on upper extremity rehabilitation in over 25 countries in the world and has won many awards for his presentations. He has over 300 presentations to his credit. He was awarded the “Dr. Paul Brand Award of Excellence” by the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT), “Award of Leadership” by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT), “Award of Excellence” by the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Hospital, “Best Educator” by the Western University, “Most Outstanding Prestigious Alumni” by the Nagpur University in India, the “Lifetime Membership Award” by the Canadian Society of Hand Therapists and recently “Excellence in Teaching and Coaching” by the administration of the St. Joseph’s Hospital in 2017. Recently the Hand Therapy fellowship program was named after him. It is now called as “Chinchalkar Hand Therapy Fellowship Program” at the Roth-McFarlane Hand & Upper Limb Center. He authored five book chapters and has published 31 papers and 15 abstracts in numerous peer-reviewed journals related to Upper Extremity Surgery and Therapy.

Vivian Dim OT Reg.(Ont.), CHT, MClScVivian Dim is an occupational therapist working in the area of hand therapy since 2000. Vivian has lectured nationally and internationally on the topic a of edema management in the upper extremity and is the Canadian instructor for Manual Edema mobilization (MEM). Vivian’s continuing education pursuits include achieving certification in complete decongestive therapy (LLCC), certification in hand therapy (CHT), certification in wound care (IIWCC) and more recently she completed her clinical masters in wound care and prevention (MClSc). Vivian has a private clinical practice in the Niagara area with a focus on hand therapy and lymphedema management and secondary on stroke care and office ergonomic assessment. She is active at McMaster University as a facilitator for evidence based practice course in the occupational therapy program and currently serves on the executive committee for the Canadian Society of Hand Therapists.

Lynne Feehan PhD, PT, CHTDr. Lynne Feehan is the Knowledge Translation Lead at the BC SUPPORT Unit and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Lynne is a clinician-scientist with many years of clinical experience working as a physiotherapist and certified hand therapist in public and private health care settings in senior clinical leadership positions. Lynne has a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies from UBC and has completed two Post-doctoral Fellowships in applied clinical research focusing on Knowledge Translation, Arthritis, Physical Activity and Bone Health. Lynne is an internationally recognized hand therapy leader, including having served as President for the International Federation of Hand Therapists. Lynne has many scientific publications, holds competitive research grants and has presented more than 40 invited hand therapy presentations globally. Lynne has wide-ranging national and international experiences and has a passion for sharing her knowledge and experiences with others.

Lisa Flewelling MScOTLisa Flewelling graduated from the University of Alberta in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy. Lisa completed her Post-Professional Masters Degree through Dalhousie University in 2015. Since 2009 Lisa has worked with the Plastic Surgery Program in Saint John, NB, as a therapy member of a wide-awake hand surgery team. In 2015 Lisa was awarded the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists Fieldwork Educator Award of Excellence, by Dalhousie University. In 2017 Lisa was awarded the AAHS Vargas Award for 2019 to return to Ghana as a hand therapy volunteer through Health Volunteers Overseas.

Mark Labrentz PT, CHTMark Labrentz graduated from the University of Alberta with a BScPT in 1991. After a dozen years in hospital orthopaedics and private practice, he found his true calling on the Hand Therapy Team at the RAH and qualified as a CHT in 2007. Mark enjoys the complex nature of hand and wrist rehabilitation, collaborating with colleagues and surgeons, and participating in surgical missions to Ecuador. He has been teaching the core Hand Therapy modules to the next generation of Physical Therapists at the U of A since 2015.

Kyle Lee OT Reg. (Ont.)Kyle Lee OT Reg. (Ont.) is an Occupational Therapist with over 20 years of experience. He has conducted in-services and workshops all across Canada and abroad. He has educated thousands of students and therapists on the use of thermoplastic materials for orthotic fabrication. He has been running the annual orthotic labs at many Ontario university OT and PT programs, and college OTA/PTA programs. He is regarded as one of the most knowledgeable therapists in Canada on the topic of thermoplastic materials and their handling characteristics. He is currently employed by Remington Medical as their National Sales and Marketing Manager.

Pat McKee M.Sc., OT(C)Pat McKee is an Associate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy at the University of Toronto where, for 27 years, she taught anatomy, hand therapy, biomechanics, orthotics (splinting), ergonomics and occupational therapy for musculoskeletal conditions to students and therapists.Pat was the 2013 honoured hand therapist at the Philadelphia Hand Meeting; invited international hand therapist at the 2014 Brazilian Congress of Hand Surgery; 2015 keynote speaker at the European Federation of Societies of Hand Therapy meeting; and an invited instructor at the 2016 IFSHT Congress.She co-authored the textbook Orthotics in Rehabilitation: Splinting the Hand and Body, as well as numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including one in the upcoming 7th edition of Rehabilitation of the Hand and Upper Extremity entitled Client-centered Bio-occupational Framework for Orthotic Intervention.In 2011, the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists gave Pat the annual award for Innovative Practice and in 2014 awarded her their Life Membership Award. Pat was the recipient of the CSHT Lifetime Membership Award in 2016.In recent years, she has collaborated with Anne Agur, an anatomy professor at UofT to develop educational media called the Anatomy Glove Learning System, which is now being used by hand therapists and university instructors in 28 countries worldwide.

Mike Morhart MSc MD FRCS(C)Michael Morhart received a Bachelor of Science degree (Honors) in Microbiology, a Master’s degree in Immunology/Microbiology, and his Medical Doctorate with distinction in 1994. After completing a surgical residency in plastic surgery at the University of Alberta in 1999, Dr. Morhart completed an orthopedic fellowship in Hand, Wrist and Microsurgery, at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, 2001 - 2002.

Dr. Morhart’s practice is hand, wrist, and peripheral nerve surgery, including obstetrical and traumatic brachial plexus injuries. Dr. Morhart is a Clinical Professor at the University of Alberta, Department of Surgery, Site Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, and an active member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Association for Hand Surgery, and the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgery.

Martina Reddick RN Martina Reddick is a registered nurse with 36 years experience who specializes in Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) for management of lymphedema/chronic edema. She has spent her time practicing in St. John, NL where she developed the first lymphedema program in Cancer Care in 2004 and worked as the lymphedema coordination for 10 years. Martina is a founder member of the Atlantic Clinical Lymphedema Network and the Lymphedema Association of NL. She sits on the advisory board for the Canadian Lymphedema Framework. She provides education for 3M Healthcare as a consultant for coban2 compression bandaging techniques.

Debby Schwartz OTD, OTR/L, CHTDebby Schwartz is a hand therapist with over 34 years of experience as a practicing clinician. She joined Orfit Industries America to promote product awareness and instruction in orthotic fabrication. Debby is an active member of ASHT and has participated in IFSHT meetings as well. She has presented on a variety of hand therapy topics both at national and international conferences, and has written a number of articles for hand therapy publications, including new orthotic designs published in the Journal of Hand Therapy. Debby completed her Doctorate of Occupational Therapy at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. She is presently coauthoring a textbook on orthotic fabrication.

Contact hours will be adjusted for those registrants who attend only on one day of the conference. HTCC will accept these contact hours in Category A.

CSHT members who attend the Annual General meeting will also receive a separate certificate for 1.5 contact hours (CEU). HTCC will accept these contact hours in Category G.

American attendees please note: Due to differing standards for each state, attendees are advised to check with their local state licensing board. CSHT believes the quality of our program meets the highest standards and should be accepted by most state licensure boards.

The Canadian Society of Hand Therapists (CSHT) invites you to share your innovative clinical practice inquiries and/or the results of your research on hand and upper extremity topics at the 12th Annual meeting in “Canada’s Festival City” of Edmonton, Alberta. We welcome scientific or clinical abstract submissions, which are peer reviewed and may be accepted for an oral presentation or poster presentation. All accepted abstracts will be published in the CSHT newsletter – In Hand. Please note that CSHT allows abstracts previously submitted to other meetings. You may submit as many abstracts as you wish. Scientific submissions include systematic reviews, scoping reviews, and original research in the quantitative or qualitative traditions.Clinical submissions may include case studies, descriptions of new or newly adapted splint designs or other treatment strategies, or descriptions of clinical treatment programs.NEW this year: we will be using e-posters for the displays! You will NOT have to print or carry your poster in a tube! More information will be provided once you have been accepted!

Format of Abstract Submission: PLEASE ADHERE TO THE FOLLOWING FORMAT:Ø Abstract submissions for a poster presentation should be a maximum of 250 words;

no figures, tables or photographs Ø Abstract submission for a paper presentation should be a maximum of 500 words;
