DESCRIPTION

Teaching resource from my recent practicum - lesson activity ideas for 'We Are Australian' units of work for Stage 6 English Studies - my time with this unit focused on studying a range of texts for their representations of Australia, including the movie, Tomorrow, when the war began; the Men at Work song "Down under", a recent Telegraph newspaper article on Alex McKinnon, and a Komninos poem.

Today’s LO: To be able to recognise Australian Values in Tomorrow when the

war began, and organise this information into a presentation.

Assessment task question 1:

Prepare a four minute speech that describes and explains:

1. The aspects of Australian culture that have been represented in a variety

of the texts studied.

Steps to create a great speech presentation:

1. Create dot points and collect key quotes for your presentation. 2. On the powerpoint slide write the dot point or quote3. Turn your dot points into paragraphs, for your speech script. Use TEEL:

e.g. “That kind of stuff, it doesn’t happen here, not in this country.” Add a picture of the character Ellie and a brief line answering the question. Something like this:

Page 5: 12ENSTU1 Lesson TWTWB Character Table and Presentation Points 16.5.14 Fri S1

For example:

A quote from the character Ellie in Tomorrow when the war began represents the peaceful qualities of Australian culture. In a series of scenes with the characters finding their houses abandoned, the teenage characters begin to act cautiously. The character Ellie says she knows why they are acting this way, but doesn’t believe their assumptions of war in Australia possible, when she says “That kind of stuff, it doesn’t happen here, not in this country.” In this quote she is showing that she has a strong belief in peace, mateship, and safety as aspects of Australian culture.
