LS MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS HELP DECORATE VILLAGE
The Lake Shore Middle School Community Service and Volunteerism (CS&V)/Leo's Club has been busy dur-ing this holiday season. On November 28th, students helped decorate the Village of Angola by placing their cut out toy soldiers around Main Street. The group also participated in a holiday tradition founded by “Friends of the Village.Inc.”, called “Christmas in the Village” on Saturday, December 8th. The club donated money for the free breakfast which included pancakes, eggs, sausage and juice/coffee/tea. All club members were dressed up as Santa’s elves and served the meals with a smile. CS&V members were also busy working the bake sale table and selling their chocolate covered pretzels and other items donated by students in CS&V/Home Careers Club and “Friends of the Village” members. The breakfast and bake sale was such a success that there was not a crumb to be found at the conclusion of the event. Next club event will be volunteering at St. Lukes.

LS SEVENTH GRADERS LEARN ABOUT COLUMBIAN EXCHANGE
Lake Shore seventh grade students recently studied and experienced an unique chapter in history. Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the Americas in 1492 launched the era of large scale contact between the old and new worlds that resulted in an ecological revolu-tion called the "Columbian" exchange. After learning about the “Columbian Exchange” in their social studies classes, the students were asked to bring in a recipe including ingredients that were brought to our country as a result of Christopher Columbus's ar-rival in the United States. The entire seventh grade class at Lake Shore Middle School, along with more than 50 parents and family members, recently gathered to cele-brate the widespread exchange of animals, plants, culture and human population. Family members were invited to join the students for lunch and join them in sampling the various foods that were a result of trade established during this important era.

LS ENGLISH BRING THE GREAT GATSBY TO LIFE
To conclude their study of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the Honors 11th grade English class at Lake Shore High School celebrated in a unique way. Dressed in flapper outfits and suits of the 1920s, students brought the spirit and history of the novel to life. Set in the post -World War I decadence of “The Roaring 20’s,” Gatsby is a story of intrigue, romance, and crime. Teacher Jill Morgan commented, “The setting of the story is truly a character in and of itself. Students seemed to be very interested in the history of that time - especially pro-hibition and the crime that was a result – so we thought it would be fun to embrace the 20’s for a day.” For this class period, students learned The Charleston - the dance craze of that age - and competed in a contest for best costume. Contest winner Brianne Ingrao reflected on the event and said, “It was really fun walking around all day in my costume,” and fellow contest winner Zachary Koenig added, “It was awesome.” Considered by many to be one of the best American novels ever written, The Great Gatsby will be released as a new motion picture in spring, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role. TEAM INFINITY HELPS MAKE-A-WISH BY WRITING TO SANTA
Lake Shore Middle School Students on Team Infinity wrote persuasive letters to Santa for an English class as-signment. The letters detailed two things the students were asking for, as well as the reasons why the students felt they deserved them and how they would put these things to good use. Requests to Santa ranged from a make-up kit to a holiday visit from an older brother in the military. Letters were addressed to Santa and dropped off at Macys, who will donate $1 to the Make – A- Wish Foundation for every letter they receive. These seventh graders are always making their teachers and families proud!

Students sacrificed their Halloween loot and managed to collect over 45 pounds of candy to donate to Soldier's An-gels, an organization that serves military men and women overseas and at home. The candy is on its way to the California- based or-ganization which will take care of sending it out to the soldiers. Shipping costs were donated by the team teach-ers who were so proud of the kids for their generous dona-tions.

Evans Town Board Spreads Holiday Cheer!Three million dollars more debt!
ETU has asked Supervisor Dash and Councilmen Cooper and Feldman to pro-vide a review of the Water Project because the project is over three years behind schedule and 67% over budget ($9.7 to 16.3 M). Professional Engineers, who are members of ETU, have proposed cost savings alternatives. The Town Board has not had the courtesy to comment on our proposals. Why not? Too much savings? Questions about the quality of the studies? We request that maps, information boards and documents covering the life of the project should be put on display in the Town Municipal Building lobby area. These should be on display for a minimum of five business, not counting the Pub-lic Hearing day, before the hearing. What is the rush to have the Public Hearing on December 27, 2012? Why during the holiday week, when the project is well over three years behind sched-ule? We believe the attendance will be very low. Is this the plan? If you agree, plan on attending or at least call Supervisor Dash at 549-5787. For more details go to EvansTaxpayersUnited.com

LIONS CLUB HELPS VFW FOOD BASKET PROGRAM
The Evans Township Lions Club, Inc. donated $200.00 to the V.F.W. Post 5798 Community Christmas Food Bas-ket Drive. Members of the V.F.W. Post delivered 211 baskets to residents of Evans, Brant, North Collins and Hanover last year. These baskets, which, in some cases were accompanied by donated toys for youngsters, helped provide a “Merrier” Christmas for the recipients. Members of the V.F.W. Post 5798 have coordinated this drive for many years and can attest to the annual growth in “need” in these towns. As everyone knows, prices keep going up. Families are forced to choose between buying food or new hats, mittens, winter coats, toys for Christ-mas. For many families, December 25th is just another day of wondering, “What do I feed the kids for dinner?” The Lions Club, along with many other service or-ganizations in the area, provides much needed cash to this Basket Drive. This money will be used to purchase enough turkeys to put one in each of the baskets. In previ-ous years, these turkeys were provided by the Food Bank. This year, the Food Bank is unable to do this because it does not have enough turkeys to go around. If your fami-ly had turkey for Thanksgiving dinner, try to imagine buy-ing 211 of them for Christmas dinner. This is why cash donations are so important. There are food items included in these baskets that are simply not donated during canned food drives. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the annual Food Basket Program can drop off non-perishable food items (canned or boxed, not frozen) at the V.F.W. Post 5798, 8989 Erie Rd. (Rte. 5), Angola, NY 14006. Monetary do-nations, by check, can also be mailed to the same address. Please mark the envelope, “Food Basket Drive.” New, unwrapped toys can also be dropped off at the V.F.W. Post. These items will be delivered with the appropriate food baskets. In this season of giving, it is important to remember that there are many people less fortunate than us. We may not see these people every day, but that does not mean they do not exist. The need for a V.F.W. Christmas Food Basket Program proves there is a real “need” in our area. Please support this community service program any way you can. Donate food items, money, or even volunteer to help with the packing or delivering of the baskets. Con-tact the V.F.W. directly. We may not want to admit it to ourselves, but any one of us could, through some twist of fate, be a recipient of one of these food baskets next Christmas. Pictured above are (left to right) Robert Jakubczak, Quartermaster of V.F.W. Post 5798 and Lion Jim Dawson, 2012/13 President, Evans Township Lions Club, Inc.

PROPER ETIQUETTE FOR GIFT-GIVINGThe rules of etiquette have loosened a bit from centuries past. No longer are people held accountable for the slightest misstep, and sometimes the rule-breakers are revered. However, when it comes to holiday gifting, erring on the side of caution and following proper etiquette can make exchanging gifts go more smoothly.Being considerate when gifting helps make the holidays enjoyable and as stress-free as possible. Some may find it unfortunate that so much pressure is placed on giving gifts this time of year. When exchanging, heed these sugges-tions.* Gift-giving is about the recipient and not you as the giver. The idea is to cre-ate that warm and fuzzy feeling for the person on the receiving end of the gift. Think about the person’s interests and find a gift that pertains to these interests. It may not be the easiest to find a rare book or those collectible golf clubs, but putting forth the effort will mean more to the person getting the gift.* Don’t up the ante. When exchanging gifts with a person, do not try to antici-pate what he or she will spend and then go above that price. This may come off as petty and make the other person feel uncomfortable. Instead, choose a price that you can readily afford and find the nicest thing within that range. If a person with whom you hadn’t anticipated exchanging gifts gives you some-thing, simply offer thanks and don’t feel uncomfortable that you do not have something to offer in return.* Gift receipts are very thoughtful. Including a gift receipt with your gift tells the recipient that you tried to find something that he or she will enjoy, but that you’re comfortable with them returning the gift if it’s not just right. Again, this conveys your feelings for the recipient. Do not, however, use gift receipts as a “get out of jail free” pass. That means, don’t simply grab anything off the rack, attach a gift receipt and attempt to pass it off as a meaningful gift.* Do not e-mail thank you notes. If you are not able to thank a person in person for a gift, it is in better taste to send a hand-written note than to fire off a quick e-mail. While writing letters has become a lost art, a hand-written thank you note stands out and shows how much you appreciate the gift.* It’s unnecessary to give your boss a gift. Gifting your boss may come across like you are trying to win favor. It also may create a competition within the of-fice. Stick to gifting colleagues, but leave the boss out of the holiday pool.* Gift cards do not break etiquette rules. Although gift cards may seem like the easy way out of gifting, they’ve become more acceptable and popular. If you want to personalize a gift card, try using a photo or special memory that cor-relates to the gift card. Otherwise, package the gift card with a few inexpensive items to create a gift basket.* When in doubt, stick with non-intimate gifts. Perfume, cologne, intimate apparel and similar items say that you know a person on a deeper level and are extremely personal. For friends and acquaintances, stick with safer gifts that do not give off intimate undertones.* Don’t regift. Whenever possible, graciously accept gifts and do not try to pass them off as your own to other people. If caught, you will be more embar-rassed than if you had not given a gift at all.Following a few guidelines on gift-giving etiquette can help to make the holi-days even happier.

LAST MINUTE GIFTSGIFT IDEAS WHEN YOUR PRESSED FOR TIME
The Christmas countdown has begun, and the days will no doubt fly off the calendar like they do every year. Before you know, it’s only a few days until the holiday is here. Those who haven’t yet started shopping may feel pressed for time and worry that they will not be able to find gifts for everyone on their lists — at least gifts that don’t look like they were afterthoughts. But good gifts can be found in the eleventh hour.
Adults• Visit the local liquor store for a bootle of wine in the price range desired. Wrap it in a wine bag or leave it as is with a nice bow.• Pick up passes to a local attraction, such as an amusement park or a museum. Put together tickets for a play paired with a soundtrack of the production.• Food is often appreciated. A box of fine chocolates or one of those edible fruit arrangements will be a tasteful, and tasty, gift.• Fill a large bowl with a scooper, sprinkles, cherries, and other toppings for making ice cream sundaes.• Pick a gift that embraces holiday spirit. Holiday music, ornaments or table decorations can be used this year or next.Children• Pop into a toy store or a department store and pick up a cuddly stuffed ani-mal.• Buy an art set for older children, full of paints and markers. If a complete set can’t be found, make an art package with a bunch of supplies packed into a gift bag.• Choose an educational gift that is still fun, like alphabet flash cards or puzzles. A subscription to a children’s magazine would also work, seeing as children love getting mail.• Few kids will turn down a DVD of their favorite television characters. The DVDs should feature an age-appropriateness rating to make choosing one even easier.
Teenagers• Teenagers can be finicky, so a monetary gift will be one-size-fits-all.• Teenage girls may appreciate a gift basket of delicious scented lotions.• Passes for movies can make date night less expensive.• Consider a gift card or e-gift coupon for digital music downloads.• Give a subscription to a teen magazine so that everyone can keep abreast of their favorite celebrities.

Under the direction of Ron Mason, the 28 member group was awarded 4th place medals for their performance that was described as “engaging” and “breathtaking”. NFCA competed on a regional level on May 5, 2012, where they earned the privilege of representing their re-gion at Harmony, Inc.’s fall event. They were also rec-ognized for their improvement by earning the Jean Linn Award for advancement in score and the Rising Star Award for their presentation. The chorus spent the next 6 months at their rehearsal hall in East Aurora working on ways to perfect their two-song package, in preparation for the November trip to Orlando. NFCA has been the WNY Chapter of Harmony, Inc. since 1987, and will celebrate its 25th anniversary in the Spring of 2013. This group meets every Monday at Ab-solute Care at Aurora - Rehab building, 292 Main Street, East Aurora. Women who like to sing are always invited to attend a rehearsal and experience the fun of a cappella singing with NFCA. For more information, call 693-4380 visit the organization’s website at www.harmonyinc.org. Details can also be found on the Niagara Frontier Chord Authority Facebook page. Town Board Critic ApologizesI apologize for scaring anyone when I opened the packages of 6 inch pipe at the December 5th Evans Town Board Meeting. I did not intend to scare any-one. I just wanted to show that, in its current loca-tion, the metal detector does not protect anyone ef-fectively. If used for the board meetings, it should be installed by the courtroom door and everyone, in-cluding town employees, should have to go through it to maximize the protection of everyone.
It should be noted that the use of metal detectors for town board meetings is not required by law or by the federal grant which purchased it. Only one other town in Erie County uses it for their board meetings.
Use the metal detector properly or not at all for Town Board Meetings.
