HIGH SPRINGS – When leaders and supporters of the North Florida Presidents Council of Motorcycle Clubs and Organizations gathered at The Diner in High Springs on Dec. 22, they presented a $12,000 contribution to support Herry’s Kids Pediatric Services, the pediatric hospice and palliative care program of Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast, licensed 1985. This donation represents proceeds from the Toy Soldier Poker Run held on Nov. 14. Combined with their donations to Herry’s Kids from the three previous annual Toy Soldier Runs, the 2015 contribution from the North Florida Presidents Council brings its support to date to $31,507. “This tradition of caring from the area’s biker community represents months of planning and organizing by people who are dedicated to making a difference and committed to helping the kids we serve,” said Director of Children’s Services Marylin Bloom. “We are grateful for their support, and we hope that they realize how much good their amazing efforts make possible.” Herry’s Kids Pediatric Services provides specialized services to children and teens with life- threatening illnesses, and offers grief support and therapeutic camps to young people who have experienced a loss. There is no cost for any Herry’s Kids programs and services. All programs are entirely dependent upon donations of time, services, supplies and money. Hello

Get the scoop

Mastering the fleshChristians celebrate the

Christmas season through Jan. 6: Jesus is born, God becomes man. God, by being born into human flesh, shows the value of all human flesh.

For too many years I had too much human flesh. Three decades of marriage, an employment that caused stress, bad habits, and simply liking to eat helped me gain 120 excess pounds.

Many things were no longer working with excess weight: I could not bend over to put on socks, I could barely climb the stairs to my second floor bedroom, and it was getting impossible to find clothes that fit.

At my greatest weight I was 290 pounds. In May 2014 I was down to 222. I have been as low as 188. This morning I weighed 198. By the end of 2016

I will be 172 on my home scale.

One day I made a specific decision. I saw a photo of myself taken on Nov. 14, 2013 at my

maximum weight. So I made my decision. Good and positive changes in life can come after a person makes a decision. My decision was to eat less and exercise more. By the end of the year, thanks to limiting late night snacking and alcohol consumption, I got down to 267.

I then found some inspiration in the witness of the Rev. Rick Warren of the S a d d l e b a c k Church who had asked publicly in his church if anyone would join him in a program to eat better, exercise, and lose weight. On the last Sunday of 2013, in both of my churches, I made the public commitment that I would drop 50 pounds during 2014. I knew I had to hold myself publicly

accountable.Having made the

decision, I have evolved my personal five point plan. First, eat less: portion control. When I eat out, I usually ask the waiter to bring a go box along with my order, and put half of my meal in the go box before I begin eating. Second, eat differently: more salads and fruit, less

meat and potatoes. Third, I stay well hydrated on water. Fourth, I exercise daily. Fifth, I am accountable. Each day when I read the Bible, I post Bible notes and my weight number online. Each week I post

my weight on a graph, and see all too clearly if I am losing, holding my own, or gaining.

There is something about making a decision. Indecision is decision in the negative. When I make a decision, I will pay a price. In weight loss, I must consistently eat less and exercise more. I will pay a price. Yet, if I decide

in the negative, eat what I like and never exercise, then I may have ill health, and then I may forever pay the very expensive price of ill health. I would rather

pay the price of a good decision.

The apostle Paul wrote that he would keep his body under control. A healthy weight is a sign of a healthy Christian. The author of I Timothy

3:5 asks how a church leader can lead the church if he cannot lead his own household. Indeed, how could I lead a congregation if I could not lead myself into a healthy lifestyle?

“Birds of a feather flock together.” We pick up the habits of those we associate with. By God’s grace, and our own willing participation (determination), we can be of a healthy weight. Our own weight control can be an encouragement to others.

So, enjoy this holiday season. A new year provides the opportunity to achieve a new, improved and healthier body in 2016. My encouragement is to make a decision: eat less and exercise more. Healthy people live healthy lives.
