ATEX ApprovalGears products for operating in potentially explosive
atmospheres.
Generall Gears units are classified as ATEX Group II Category
2 equipment, which embodies sufficient safeguards to besuitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres for normaloperation and for operation during an expected malfunction.
l It is essential that there is sufficient lubricant to prevent thegears and bearings running ‘dry’. Gear units should be inspecteddaily for signs of oil leakage, overheating or noisy operation.
l Gear units should be cleaned at regular intervals depending onthe operating conditions, to ensure that dust coatings neverexceed 5mm. Plastic parts should be wiped clean with a dampcloth.
l Oil leaks should be dealt with as quickly as practical. Compoundjoint faces and shims should be cleaned and thread-lockingsealant should be applied to bolts and plugs prior to re-assembly.
l The temperature of any external surfaces must not exceed thepermitted maximum of 135°C (T4).
l Higher temperature class T3 is available dependant on unitmounting, ratio and gear type. For further details consultRenold.
l As a general rule, gear units should be mounted with their feethorizontal. For other mountings, particularly with shaft mountedunits, consult Gears.

Unit Selectionl The gear unit selection procedures must include an additional
reliability factor of 1.25 for mechanical ratings and 1.25 forthermal ratings.

The Renold Carter range of Variators arerobust, totally enclosed and superblyqualified to cope with extremes like hightemperatures, wet and dirty workingconditions and explosive atmospheres.
The MKF4 and 5 have been added to therange of MK Variators and thesefacilitate the direct mounting of standard‘D’ flange motors, which results in a morecompact unit.
With a bolt-on IEC output flange the MKrange of Variators allows directinterfacing to any reduction gear thataccepts a standard ‘D’ flange motor.
Renold Carter Variators give smooth,stepless speed variations over a 27:1speed range and provide 200% full
rated torque on start up. Superbreliability goes hand-in-hand withminimum maintenance. A periodic oilchange is all that is needed. Many arestill working perfectly after thirty years.
Even so, we still offer a 24-hourreplacement service of factory-refurbished units, each covered by a1-year guarantee.

ELECTRONIC CONTROLSThe CONTROSET 125 is a versatilemonitor and controller designed anddeveloped for use with standard servocontrol motors on Carter HydrostaticVariable Speed Drives.
A four digit LED displays continuousspeed or rate indication in the normal runmode.
The keypad is used to directly select therequired speed and set various controlparameters, such as top and bottomspeed limits, pre-set speeds, manualoverride, and can be arranged toincorporate incoming process signals andlow speed inter-locking features.
Utilising tacho feedback to the controllervia a speed sensing probe fitted to theCarter Variator, provides speed controlaccuracy to +0.1%, even under varyingload.
The CONTROSET 125 can be retrofittedto existing Carter installations, thusproviding enhanced control to the provenreliability of the Carter HydrostaticVariable Speed Drives.
A VARIETY OF CONTROL OPTIONSSimple direct control of Carter Variatorvia the keypad - on the Controsetcontroller. Automated process control,the command or feedback signal beingderived from a transducer or computermonitoring the condition of the materialbeing produced. Typical processconditions which can be controlled aretemperature, pressure, weight, moisturecontent, flow etc.Preferred signals 0-10v,0-10 and 4-20mA. The facility to link andcontrol automatically a number of CarterVariators driving individual machinesections. Ratio of speeds between theindividual sections can be achieved byincorporating suitable trimmers to modifythe reference signals.
A simple auto/manual switch option can beincorporated into the control circuit. Thisallows (in the event of loss of a transducersignal or failure in the electronic circuitry)for the control to be switched over to amanual operation of the drive/drives byFAST/SLOW push buttons until it isconvenient to rectify the fault. Thisminimizes down-time and lost production.

SPEED INDICATIONIndication of variator output speed can beprovided on the full range of CarterVariators and is achieved using a DigitalMeter, in conjunction with a ProximityProbe fitted to the Carter Variator whichmonitors its output speed.
DIGITAL METERTwo types are available, the DFM100which is used to indicate speed orprocess rate (meters, revs/min etc) andthe DTM25 which can be calibrated tosuit continuous processes for indicationof baking, freezing, drying times etc.
