Materials and Teaching PropsThe focal point of Unit 1 lessons is a large Christmas tree with picture ornaments thathelp tell the Christmas story.

Teaching AreaSet up a large artificial Christmas tree, six to eight feet tall, or make a tree out of greenfabric, poster board, or butcher paper. If you make your tree, cut out three large trianglesand overlap them on the wall. Top the tree with a star.

Hang the picture ornaments (see below) on the tree with ribbon or ornament hangers.Place them in the order in which the story will be told, starting at the top and movingdown in rows from left to right. At the beginning of each lesson, the ornaments shouldbe flipped backward so that kids cannot see the pictures. As the story is told, flip theappropriate picture over to illustrate that part of the story. When all the pictures havebeen flipped over, the tree should pictorially tell the Christmas story in order, similar toan advent calendar.

Add any additional Christmas decorations you desire, such as cut-out snowflakes, swathes of metallic fabric, colored lights, etc. Avoid using any decorations with Santa,Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman, etc.

Making the Christmas OrnamentsCreate the Christmas tree ornaments by printing the appropriate pictures and cuttingthem out in large ovals. Mount each picture on brightly colored construction paper andcut the construction paper in an oval as well, so that it frames the picture. Poke wireornament hangers through the tops of the mounted pictures if you are hanging them onan artificial tree. To hang ornaments on a wall tree, punch a hole in the top of a mountedpicture and thread a loop of string or ribbon through it. Tape or glue the top of the loopto the tree so that the picture can be flipped back and forth.

Print the following pictures from the Visual Folder to use as ornaments: Mary, Joseph,Angel, Cow, Sheep, Donkey (Lesson 1 LG 2–Lesson 1 LG 7), Shepherd, and Baby Jesus(Lesson 2 SG 14–Lesson 2 SG 15). Make two angel ornaments.

Music and Sound EffectsThe suggested songs are available on the Jump for Joy, Reach Up High, and Touch the Sky CDs, and the lesson sound effects are included on the Winter Quarter Sound Effects CD.Make sure your helper is prepared to cue up and play the necessary sound and music foreach lesson.

Helpful Hints• Be sure to give the kids an opportunity to get to know you by telling them about your-

self or letting them ask you questions.

• The halos in Lesson 1 can be created by cutting lengths of gold or silver wire garland.Twist the ends together to form a circlet.

• When doing crafts with your kids, as in Lesson 2, do as much pre-preparation as possi-ble. The kids should have only one or two things to do to complete the craft.

• Celebration is a major focus of this unit, and most of the lessons suggest providinginstruments, jingle bells, or scarves for each child to use while singing and dancing withthe music. All these items may be simple and inexpensive. Consider creating your ownscarves using fabric remnants or jingle bells by looping pipe cleaners through bells froma craft store. You can also simply encourage kids to pretend that they’re shaking jinglebells or playing an instrument while they sing and dance.

• Goodies and snacks are a fun part of any Christmas celebration. However, please con-sider potential food allergies. Check with parents in advance, or send snacks home with

the children so their parents can decide.• If you have any extra time with the kids before class or at the end while waiting for their

parents, pretend to do some of your favorite Christmas activities. For example, pretendto make cookies. (Stir the cookie dough, make the cookies, put them in the oven, and eat.)

• As parents come to pick up their child, remember to introduce yourself and share withthe parent some of the positive things you saw in their child.
