Message

from the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all of you who have come from near and far to

Germany’s capital city for the 11th IAA Symposium on Small Satellites for Earth Observation.

The symposium is dedicated to a highly innovative research field. The advances being made in

earth observation from space are breathtaking and, more and more, are finding application in

industry. Optics and photonics technologies, which can help identify forest fires and tsunamis,

figure prominently in these developments and are playing an ever greater role in the exploration of

space. In other words, those of you taking part in the Symposium on Small Satellites and visiting

the accompanying exhibition will not only gain real insight into the latest developments in

technology, but will also have an ideal opportunity to exchange ideas and experience with

stakeholders from both ends of the spectrum, research and application.

As a result, I am delighted that the international Symposium on Small Satellites being held in Berlin

has aroused such keen interest in academic and professional circles. My sincere thanks go to both of

the organizers of this prestigious event: DLR, Germany’s national aeronautics and space research

center, with its Berlin-Adlershof location, and Technische Universität Berlin, whose TUBSAT

program is actively involved in developing small satellites. The Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of

Sciences and Humanities has provided the conference with a venue, and I would like to express my

sincere thanks for that, too.

In this spirit, I would like to wish all of the participants not only an insightful program and thought-

provoking exchanges with colleagues, but some free time outside your conference sessions to

explore Berlin’s exciting cultural life. You’ll be glad you did!

Michael Müller

Governing Mayor of Berlin

Excursion to DLR-Site Berlin

April 28, 2017, 09:00 – 13:00 (9:00 meeting point BBAW)

Welcome at DLR: The Institute of Optical Sensor Systems and the Institute of

Planetary Research Learn about the FireBIRD - Mission and meet the FireBIRD - BIROS Satellite.DLR

Fire detection from space: FireBIRD is an earth observation mission with the primary goal of

monitoring fires from space. It involves the detection of high-temperature events and the providing

of remote sensing data for research at DLR and for external partners. The space segment consists of

the two satellites TET-1 (Launch 2012) and BIROS (Launch 2016). The main payload for both

satellites is a multispectral camera system.

Learn about the Mars-Express Mission and fly over the Mars in 3D

It follows an elliptical orbit around Mars, undisturbed, almost lonely – the orbiter Mars Express. For

11 years now European Space Agency longest-serving interpla-netary mission has been travelling

around our planetary neighbour. This will give the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) ),

operated on board Mars Express by the German Aerospace Center numerous additional

opportunities to record the entire surface of Mars in high resolution, colour and, above all, in 3D.
