responding growth in staff, has resulted in serious overcrowding and a growing concern for patient and family privacy, explained Anne Vance, CEO for Pavillon.

This has prompted a grow-ing need for the new welcome center.

While operating revenues will supply a portion of the funds for construction of the center,

philanthropy will also play a major role.

“At a time when foundations are being inundated with requests for funding, we are deeply grate-ful for the generosity of the Reynolds Foundation and for their confidence in us as we move forward to build a state of the art facility to serve our patients and families,” said Vance. “We look forward to not only meeting, but exceeding, their expectations.”

The foundation, which selec-

tively funds capital projects pri-marily in North Carolina, focuses on health-related construction efforts that benefit patients and their families.

Because admitting a loved one for treatment of addiction is a difficult and sensitive time for all concerned, Vance said, it is vitally important to provide an appropriate space that is condu-cive to open and honest dialog in

Architect's drawing of the proposed new 6,500-square-foot welcome center at the Pavillon Treatment Center in Mill Spring. The center recently received a $20,000 grant which officials say will be the spark to ignite the project.

a safe, comfortable, and secluded area. Once completed, the new welcome center will be such a space, Vance said.

As these services are transi-tioned into the new facility, the vacated space in the existing building will be renovated for

Speed limit to be 35 mph on Saluda’s Ozone DriveResidents object during meetingby Leah Justice

Travelers on Ozone Drive in Saluda will soon have to slow down.

Saluda city commissioners announced at their meeting last week that the speed limit on Ozone Drive will be reduced to 35 mph from the current limit of 45 mph.

The Saluda City Board of Commissioners last Monday agreed to request the N.C. Depart-ment of Transportation (DOT) to change the current speed limit signs to 35 mph. The city actu-ally approved changing the speed limit several months ago, but had not yet officially requested that the signs be changed.

Residents called out questions during the meeting.

“Do ya’ll drive that road?” asked Sunny Pace.

Some people said it will take forever to go along Ozone at 35 mph, and others said the steep hill

on Ozone Drive makes it impos-sible to drive 35 mph.

Saluda Mayor Fred Baisden said one of the reasons for the change is that drivers are coming out of a 45 mph zone into a 20 mph zone downtown.

Saluda Police Chief James Cantrell added that if the speed limit is dropped to 35 mph, drivers will slow down. Some people are currently driving 55 to 65 mph along Ozone Drive, he said.

Another local resident, Betsy Burdett, said the change will allow people to walk on the road safely.

The Town of Columbus in recent years dropped the speed limit along Hwy. 108 between the roundabouts and downtown from 35 mph to 25 mph. Colum-bus officials at that time said the change would slow down traffic in the congested business area. Columbus does not enforce the new speed limit strictly.

No estimates have been made when the state will change the signs to the lower speed limit.

One of the 45 m.p.h. speed limit signs on Ozone Dr. in Saluda that will soon be replaced with new 35 m.p.h. signs. (photo by Leah Justice)

otter pooL at WnC nature Center named for Horne

A newly renovated otter exhibit at the Western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville, NC, was named for Polk resident Brandon Horne, who died in November 2009. The renovations were funded by a donation from Horne's mother, Rennie Habel, in memory of her son, who was passionate about nature and animals. Through this memorial, she said, Horne will share his love of nature with thousands of Nature Center visitors for years to come. Horne was raised on his great-grandparents' farm in Polk County. He spent his youth studying and admiring the host of Southern Appalachian animals that lived there: snakes, opossum, bobcat, turkey and hawks. Noticing Horne's enthusiasm for the natural world, his mother made sure that many of their activities together were nature related. They visited many zoos while Horne was growing up. As Friends of the WNC Nature Center, Habel said she and her son made great use of the reciprocal zoo benefit and enjoyed every moment of it. Horne was married to Jolene Clark Horne of Walcott Farm Lane, Tryon.

New promotional video coming to Landrum’s websiteby Leah Justice

The City of Landrum is cur-rently working on a video for its website centered on the city’s slogan, “There’s more to do in Landrum.”

Landrum City Council dis-cussed last week a video to be placed on the city’s website at www.cityoflandrum.com. The video will focus on the city's beauty and attractions and will be designed to draw more visi-tors.

City administrator Steve Wo-lochowicz said the video will

show a lot of illustrations of the town and the area, with cameos from residents.

The video, which will be ap-proximately three to five minutes long, will cost the city $2,500. The money will come from hospitality tax funds.

Synergy Point, the city’s website providers, are handling the video.

The video will be approxi-mately three to five minutes.

It is not known yet when the video will be complete to be placed on the website.

A few tips…• Lighter and more contrasting subjects and backgrounds

will print better than subjects and backgrounds with simi-lar hues. When possible, keep the background clean and simple, not too cluttered.

• Focus on the people in your shots – zoom in on them so that their expressions can be seen. When possible, show people doing things rather than lined up facing the camera.

• High-quality (100 or 200 dpi) .jpg formats are preferred, between 3 and 6 inches wide.

• When you email the photo, if at all possible, please include in your email the names of all the people in your photo. Photos without names are less likely to be published.

areas, and for the purpose of networking. Other objectives are to initiate and support new approaches for business success in Polk County, and to sponsor networking and educational op-portunities for small, develop-ing businesses in our region.

Mountain BizWorks is a non-profit organization that provides training, loans and coaching to enhance business development throughout the Western North Carolina Re-gion. The mission of Mountain BizWorks is to inspire entre-preneurs who have viable busi-ness ideas and the discipline to follow through and to build economic opportunities through business training and capital. The intention of the CABA is to build a more vibrant local economy in Western North Carolina through agriculture.

The Polk County Office of Agricultural Development is

focused on both creating new agricultural businesses and en-hancing existing operations as part of a rural development and community strategy. CABA is a critical forum for achieving these goals.

Lynn Sprague, Polk County agricultural economic director, remarked, “First, the success-ful work we have done with Mountain Biz Works and the agriculture community is now being modeled throughout western North Carolina. The re-cently established collaboration with Appalachian Sustainable Agricultural Project (ASAP), Mountain BizWorks and the Organic Growers School will further enhance the opportu-nity to serve Western North Carolina’s Agricultural Com-munity in a really meaningful way. Secondly, the video by Turner HD Media has had a fantastic response from all over the country, including Canada. We are pleased that the Turners teamed up with Polk County

farmers for this effort.”Turner HD Media is a full

service video and audio pro-duction company that creates content promoting a positive image for businesses and or-ganizations. Turner HD Media also builds and maintains small business websites.

Based upon their own expe-riences growing up on farms and with the recent release of the “Meet Your Polk County Farmer” video, the Turners say they are committed to working with the agriculture community to help tell their stories in a fun and positive way. Through the process of creating the video, they learned how vital sus-tainable agriculture is to the economy of the region and they will continue promoting that cause. If you would like a sneak peak of the video visit: www.polkcountyfarms.org.

Agricultural businesses can vary from on-the-ground farm operations to value added products and agri-tourism to

services for equestrian opera-tions. CABA is part of an effort being made to reconnect the residents and local businesses to an agricultural and economic heritage. Agriculture, including the equestrian and viticulture operations, is the biggest busi-ness in Polk County. With the current trends to buy local healthy foods and encourage small businesses, the number of agri-businesses is expected to increase over the next several years.

Everyone who is interested in learning more about the use of video in today’s challeng-ing marketing environment is encouraged to bring a dish and enjoy the peer group environ-ment and networking session on Wednesday, November 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the ag-center in Mill Spring.

Polk runningback Cary Littlejohn (11) runs with the ball late in the fourth quarter against Maiden on Friday night. The Wolverine tailback scored three touchdowns on Friday night in the 52-21 Polk rout in the first round of the state playoffs. Polk will host East Rutherford at home on Friday night at 7:30. (photo by Joey Millwood)

Wolverines dominate Maiden 52-21 in first round of state playoffs; Polk advances to second roundby Joey Millwood

polk County head coach Bruce ollis told his team they had five games left. Five more wins and the Wolverines would be state champions.

The Wolverines can check that first victory off their to-do list. Polk County dominated Maiden in the “Little Big House” on Friday night 52-21.

During the week leading up to the first round matchup in the North Carolina 2A playoffs, Ollis said that the Wolverines would have to keep the ball out of Maiden’s hands. With a strong running game and dominant spe-cial teams play, the Wolverines did just that.

The key factor in the win,

however, was the second quar-ter.

When asked about the second quarter, coach Ollis could only shake his head and smile.

“I’ve been coaching for 31 years and I don’t think I’ve ever seen that drastic of a momentum change,” he said. “It’s like we flipped a switch on.”

The Wolverines (11-1) spent most of the first quarter in the first round of the North Carolina 2A state playoffs on defense. Down 7-0 at the start of the sec-ond quarter, tailback Cary Little-john leaned on the Wolverines’ offensive line and took over.

polk ran the sweep repeatedly and the Blue Devils couldn’t stop it. The six-play drive was

punctuated by a sweep to Little-john with 10:49 left to go till halftime. Littlejohn finished with 128 yards rushing and three touchdowns and gave the credit to the big boys up front.

“They were blocking really well, making holes and I was hitting them,” Littlejohn said. Littlejohn scored the first and last touchdowns of the game.

The Wolverines defense ac-centuated the offense’s domi-nation. Polk’s Andre Overholt recovered a fumble and picked off Blue Devil quarterback Matt Johnson in the quarter. Blue Devil return man Will Jenkins also fumbled the ball inside the redzone on a kick return. Polk capitalized on all three turnovers

with touchdowns. When the dust settled, the

Wolverines scored 35 unan-swered points before halftime.

“It was a nightmare,” Blue Devil head coach Brian Brown said. “(The second quarter) did us in.”

The Wolverines had a big night on the ground aside from Littlejohn. Overholt ran for 139 yards and three touchdowns. The senior quarterback also threw for 109 yards. Cody Orick added 110 yards on the ground with a touchdown.

The Wolverines will host East Rutherford next week in the second round of the playoffs. East Rutherford upset Starmount 24-14.

Frank Lilly to speak on Polk’s grape growing heritage Nov. 17

On November 17 at 1 p.m. in the Com-munity Room of the Polk County Library in Columbus, Frank Lilly, winemaker and owner of Overmoun-tain Vineyards, will share his experiences growing grapes in Polk County. Lilly will be addressing his remarks to Tryon Garden Club mem-bers and the public is welcome to attend.

When Wil l iam Gi l le t te stepped off the train in Tryon in the early 1900s he did so in order

to buy some local grapes. Many varieties of grapes were grown in Polk County, some for wine and some for the table. Lilly has been growing grapes for the last eight years. He is part of the movement to restore an industry which once flourished here.

For the last five years Lilly and his wife Lita have been selling grapes grown on their vineyard to The Biltmore Estate winery. Lilly also provides gen-eral consultation on vineyard management, laboratory analysis and wine making.

Lilly holds a B.A. degree from East Carolina University. Re-cently he completed a certificate program at Surry Community College with focus on enology and viticulture. Lilly served as an officer in the U.S. Army and has been a resident of Polk County since 1996.

Membership in the Tryon Garden Club, the owner/operator of Pearson’s Falls, is open. For information about membership in the Tryon Garden Club contact Lee Cudlip at 828-859-0309.
