WKU at Texas Tech Game Notes • Dec. 21, 2011

Interview Policy — All WKU basketball interview requests for staff and players must be made through the Offi ce of Athletic Media Relations at all times during the year. Failure to abide by this policy could result in limited access to members of the program.

Postgame Interviews — The WKU locker room is closed to the media. Select WKU players will be available in the media room after a 10-minute cooling-off period, and head coach Mary Taylor Cowles will be available after the Big Red Radio Network’s postgame radio show. Visiting coach and players will be brought to the Media Room by request, otherwise contact the visiting SID for post-game interview needs. On the road, the Lady Topper locker room will remain closed — WKU will adhere to the home team’s postgame interview policies.

Lady Topper Tip-Off WKU returns to action after a 10-day break for semester fi nals. That is the longest gap between

games for the Lady Toppers this season. One third (5 of 15) of the Lady Topper roster hail from the state of Texas. WKU is looking for its fi rst true road victory of 2011. Its only win away from E.A. Diddle Arena came

in a neutral-site contest against Samford.

Next GameWKU returns from Christmas on Dec. 29 and jumps back into Sun Belt Conference play with a contest at ULM. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. (CST) from Monroe, and the game will be televised on the Hilltopper Sports Satellite Network. Texas Tech takes on Cal State-Bakersfi eld on Dec. 29 in the Surf ‘N Slam Tournament in San Diego.

Last Time OutVanessa Obafemi scored a career-high 22 points, going 5-for-8 from three-point range, to help the Western Kentucky University women’s basketball team to a 65-48 win over Florida International on Dec. 11 at E.A. Diddle Arena in the fi rst Sun Belt Conference game of the year for both teams. WKU limited FIU to just 4-for-22 shooting in the fi rst half as it was able to build a 20-point lead at in-termission. The 11 points allowed to FIU were the fewest a Lady Topper team has allowed in a half since Texas-Pan American scored nine second-half points on Jan. 15, 1998. It was a different story in the second half as Jerica Coley took over for FIU — scoring 26 of her game-high 32 points in the second half. In fact, she accounted for all but 11 of FIU’s points after intermission. Despite the one-man show, WKU never saw its lead dip below 12 points the rest of the way as the Lady Toppers connected on nine of 12 free throws in the fi nal two minutes to push the fi nal margin to 17 points. Obafemi paced three Lady Toppers in double fi gures as both Owens and Chaney Means fi nished with 12 points. Chasity Gooch also put together another strong effort with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Coley was the only Panther to score in double digits as she accounted for two-thirds of their points in the contest.

2011-12 WKU Lady Topper Basketball 3

WKU at Texas Tech Game Notes • Dec. 21, 2011Home For the Holidays — Though the game will be played several hours from their hometowns, fi ve Lady Toppers get to return to their home state of Texas right before the holidays for Wednesday’s game at Texas Tech. Seniors Jasmine Johnson, Vanessa Obafemi and Teranie Thomas, along with freshman Summer Fife all hail from the Dal-las/Fort Worth Metroplex, while freshman Alexis Govan is a native of San Antonio. The group will make one more trip closer to home in mid Janu-ary when WKU visits North Texas for a Sun Belt matchup in Denton.

Another Top 25 Test — For the second time this season, the Lady Toppers will face a team ranked in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Texas Tech enters play this week ranked 15th by the AP and 20th by the coaches in poll released on Dec. 19 and 13, respectively. Duke came to Bowling Green back on Nov. 20 ranked eighth in the country.

Obafemi Has Career Day — Senior Vanessa Obafemi dropped in a career-high 22 points, leading the way fro WKU in its 17-point win over Florida Internatonal last time out. The senior guard connected on a career-best fi ve three pointers in the contest, and also went 7-of-8 at the charity stripe to account for her 22 points. That effort topped her previous career high of 16 points, set against Denver in the quarterfi nals of the 2010 Sun Belt Tournament. Not one to be selfi sh, Obafemi also dished out a career-high four as-sists against FIU.

First Half Shutdown — WKU’s 17-point win over Florida International was thanks in large part to a strong effort on both ends of the court in the fi rst half. While the Lady Toppers‘ 31 points and 54.2 percent shooting were impressive, their work on the defensive end was close to dominating. WKU limited FIU to just four fi eld goals and 11 points in the fi rst 20 minutes of action, take a 20-point lead into the locker room. That was the fewest points a Lady Topper team has allowed in a half since Texas-Pan American scored nine in the second half of a 104-32 WKU victory on Jan. 15, 1998.

Chaney Means Business At The Line — Sopho-more guard Chaney Means scored a career-high 12 points against FIU, with most of that work com-ing late in the game at the free throw line. Means went a perfect 6-for-6 at the stripe in the fi nal two minutes to help WKU pull away and secure its 17-point win. While her trips have been limited in her young Lady Topper career, Means has taken advantage of the time she has gone to the charity stripe. In fact, she is a perfect 12-for-12 over the past two seasons from the free throw line.

Trying To Take It On The Road — WKU has been dominate in its last two home contests, being either in the lead or tied wire-to-wire in both games and winning by an average of 16 points per game. It has been a different story on the road, however, where the Lady Toppers are 0-5 on the opposition’s home fl oor, dropping each of those contests by double fi gures. WKU will look to turn that tide as each of its next two games — and four of the next six — are on the road.

Education Day Makes Return Jan. 4 — Over 2,000 area students will attend the 2nd Annual “Spread the Red Education Day” home basketball game against Louisiana-Lafayette on January 4. Students in grades 6-8 from Bowling Green schools, grade 8 from Warren County schools, select 6-8 graders from Glasgow Middle School and select 8th grade students from Lewisburg School in Logan County and their teachers and school staff, will be admitted to the game free of charge and all students will receive a goody bag as they enter the arena from Hilltopper sponsors. Last year’s event drew more than 7,000 students to Diddle Arena — the largest crowd to see a Lady Topper game since the arena renovation.

Three Is A Magic Number — The Lady Toppers are second in the Sun Belt, and 41st nationally, in three-point fi eld goal percentage shooting 36.9% from the three-point arc. WKU shot 54.5% from long distance against Louisiana Tech Monday night, making 6-of-11 threes. Vanessa Obafemi and Chaney Means combined to go 6-of-9 from the three-point arc against the Lady Techsters.

Freshman Orientation — With 15 players, the Lady Toppers have one of their larger rosters in recent memory, and almost half of that group is freshmen. Seven rookies make their debut for WKU in the 2011-12 season. That is the largest Lady Topper freshman class since 1987-88 when that roster also included seven freshmen. One member of the ‘87-88 rookie class was the reigning Kentucky Miss Basketball Mary Taylor.

Lots of Leadership — While there is a large amount of rookies on this year’s roster, there is also more senior leadership than usual. This year’s squad boast fi ve seniors — the most since there were fi ve seniors on the 1994-95 squad.

Production To Replace — With so many new faces also comes the need to fi ll the production void left by departing seniors. WKU lost 55.5 per-cent of its scoring, 41.9 percent of its rebounding and 75.8 percent of its assists from the 2010-11 squad. Senior LaTeira Owens is the only returner to average in double fi gures last season.

WKU at Texas Tech Game Notes • Dec. 21, 2011Two Sign Early — On Nov. 9, WKU got a pair of early signings as forward Jalynn McClain (Jeffersonville, Ind.) and guard Micah Jones (Greensburg, Ky.) signed their National Letters of Intent to play on the Hill starting in 2012-13. McClain helped lead Jeffersonville High to a state championship in 2011, averaging 15.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Jones missed her junior year with a knee injury, but has played varsity basketball since her seventh-grade year at Green County, eclipsing 1,000 career points as a sophomore.

Owens Named Preseason All-SBC — Senior forward LaTeira Owens was the lone Lady Topper to earn a spot on the preseason all-Sun Belt Conference team, garnering second-team honors. The Columbia, Tenn., native is WKU’s top returning scorer after averaging a career-best 10.5 points per game during her junior campaign. She also ripped down 6.6 rebounds per contest, while shooting 43 percent from the fi eld and 72 percent from the free throw line. Owens scored in double fi gures in 17 times last season, adding fi ve double-double performances.

Lady Toppers On the Tube — A total of nine Lady Topper games during the 2011-12 regular season will appear on television, starting with the game at Illinois State on Dec. 9 that will be shown on ES-PN3.com. The Hilltopper Sports Satellite Network will air six of those games, including four away from home. This year’s HSSN schedule includes home against against Louisiana-Lafayette (Jan. 4) and Troy (Jan. 6), and road games at Louisiana-Monroe (Dec. 28), Florida International (Jan. 28), Troy (Feb. 11) and South Alabama (Feb. 18). In addition, the Sun Belt Network will broadcast two WKU home games — Florida International (Dec. 11) and Middle Tennessee (Feb. 26) — as the network Game of the Week.

She’s Seen A Lot — Now in her tenth season as head coach, Mary Taylor Cowles has won nearly 200 games leading her alma mater. But that is just a portion of the victories she been a part of as a member of the Lady Topper program. In all, Cowles has been a part of 421 WKU victories either as a player, assistant coach or head coach. That equates to 54 percent of the Lady Toppers’ all-time victories.

Championship Effort — Lady Topper Basketball has been one of the elite programs in all of college basketball — entering the 2011-12 postseason with 821 victories...11th most in Division I his-tory. WKU has been to 16 NCAA Tournaments and three Final Fours. It also boasts 19 Sun Belt Conference championships — 10 regular-season titles and a league-best nine postseason tourna-ment championships.

WKU at Texas Tech Game Notes • Dec. 21, 2011

MaryTaylor Cowles

Head Coach • Tenth Season • Three-Time Sun Belt Coach of the Year

In her tenth season at the helm, Mary Taylor Cowles has restored WKU’s storied tradition as head coach of the Lady Topper program. A three-time Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, Cowles led the Lady Toppers to six straight 20-win seasons and fi ve Sun Belt East Division championship between 2003 and 2008. WKU won the title outright in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008. In her fi rst season, Cowles led WKU to a 22-9 record and the 2003 Sun Belt Con-ference East Division title. After starting the year 5-7, Cowles regrouped her troops as WKU won 17 of its last 19 games, including 14 straight to win the Sun Belt Tournament championship and return to the NCAA Tournament for the 15th time in school history. The Lady Toppers also fi nished the year with a 12-2 conference record, the best mark in the Sun Belt. Her efforts during her fi rst campaign as head coach earned her Sun Belt Coach-of-the-Year honors, making her the fi rst Lady Topper coach since Paul Sanderford in 1986 to win the award. Following a 22-5 regular season in 2006, Cowles again was named the league Coach of the Year, then won the award again in 2008 after leading WKU to a league-best 16-2 Sun Belt record and another East Divsion Championship. That put her in company with Sanderford and Leon Barmore (Louisiana Tech) as the only coaches in Sun Belt history to win Coach-of-the-Year honors three times. WKU picked up its second straight East Division title in 2003-04, this time sharing the title with Arkansas State and Middle Tennessee with a 10-4 league record. After advancing to the SBC Tournament championship game for the second straight year, Cowles’ young squad took advantage of an invitation to the 2004 WNIT. WKU ad-vanced to the quarterfi nals of the tournament for the second time in school history, and posted a 20-14 re-cord. WKU went on to capture its third straight Sun Belt East title under Cowles in 2004-05, fi nishing the season 20-10 and posting a 12-2 mark in the conference. WKU enjoyed its most successful season under Cowles in 2005-06, fi nishing 27-7 and winning the SBC East with a 12-2 mark. She joins Sanderford as the only two coaches in the program’s history to begin their coaching careers with four straight 20-win campaigns. The Lady Toppers also enjoyed another successful post-season run, advancing to the semifi nals of the WNIT for the fi rst time in school history before falling to eventual champion Kansas State by one point in overtime. After a 23-9 season and another trip to the WNIT semifi nals in 2006-07, Cowles helped guide the Lady Toppers back to the NCAA Tournament in 2007-08. WKU posted a 26-7 record in ‘07-08, while winning 23 games in the regular season — the most in 10 seasons. The Lady Toppers then picked up their second Sun Belt Tournament championship, and earned a No. 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament. In seven years, Cowles has seen many of her players bring home individual honors. That group includes 16 all-Sun Belt selections (Crystal Kelly (four times), Les-lie Logsdon (three times), Tiffany Porter-Talbert (three times), Dominique Duck (twice), Arnika Brown, Kenzie Rich, Shala Reese and Kristina Covington), nine all-Sun Belt Tournament picks (Kelly (twice), Porter-Talbert (twice), Logsdon, Covington, Duck, Brown and Rich), three Sun Belt Players of the Year (Reese, Porter-Tal-bert and Kelly) and three Sun Belt Freshmen of the Year (Porter-Talbert, Kelly and Brown). Kelly also became the fi rst Lady Topper to earn WBCA/Kodak All-America hon-ors under Cowles during the 2006-07 season. Cowles is familiar with the WKU program from top to bottom — she played for the Lady Toppers from 1987-

91 and was a member of the Lady Topper coaching staff as an assistant (1995-97) and associate head coach (1997-2001). During her time on the Hill, Cowles has been a part of 10 Lady Topper NCAA Tournament berths (1988-91 as a player, and 1995, ‘97-98, 2000, 2003 and 2008 as a coach), including two Sweet Sixteen appearances in 1991 and 1995. Cowles was one of 30 players voted by fans to the all-time Lady Topper team as part of the WKU Centennial Celebration in 2006. Cowles came to the Hill from Marshall County High School in Benton, Ky., where she averaged 18.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. She was selected as a Kentucky Gatorade All-American in 1987 and was pre-sented with the Kentucky “Miss Basketball” award, the fourth Lady Topper signee at the time to receive the honor. Her prep career also earned her induction into the Kentucky Lions Club All-Star Hall of Fame in 1999, and the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2000. During her college career on the Hill, Cowles earned the WKU Coaches’ Award in 1991. In addition, she was named the Most Valuable Player in the ‘91 Sun Belt Conference Tournament and, as a senior that year, she was WKU’s Female Athlete of the Year. By the time she concluded her career as a player, Cowles had scored 1,072 points, making her the 16th member of the Lady Topper 1,000-Point Club. She scored on nearly half of her shots, with a 49.9 percent shooting percentage. She also completed her career ranked in the top 10 on four of WKU’s career statistical lists, including rebounds and blocked shots. Cowles earned her bachelor’s degree in business education from WKU in 1992 and received her master’s degree in 2004. A resident of Bowling Green, Cowles is married to Gil Ray Cowles, a WKU graduate (1985), em-ployed by Astra Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. The Cowles’ have three children — a son, Corbin, and two daughters, Caroline and Catherine.
