    PROJECT BRIEF

The object of this exercise is to develop your drawing and presentation skills by selecting a

simple assembly from the list below. Where possible you should try to obtain an itemyourself, you may purchase/obtain one as a group to help split the cost.

Car Foot Pump Shock Absorber Assy. Brake Caliper

    Piston, Con Rod, CrankAssy

    Cycle Bottom Bracket Wankel Engine

Car Hub Assembly Pipe Bender Control Arm

If, for example, you decide to draw a shock absorber, it doesnt necessarily need to befrom a car. Radio controlled cars use shock absorbers, so do pushbikes and motorcycles.Brake calipers are used on many devices, as are pistons and cranks. So please avoidtaking your car apart, and/or complaining you cant measure the shock properly on one ofour vehicles as theres a wheel in the way. Do a bit of research!!!

    WHAT YOU SHOULD SUBMIT

-Cover Page-Contents-An introduction to the selected product including photos, sketches and an understandingof its usage and materials (250 words)

-Detailed hand drawn 2D orthographic drawing of 2 components (One page = onecomponent).

-Isometric drawing of entire assembly, CAD or hand drawn (all components in assembly, not just the 2 above).

    Bill of Materials (Google this!!)

Overall presentation and structure of report must be of suitable standard as marks will belost for unsatisfactory and poor presentation.

    TO ACHIEVE HIGHER MARKS.

All documents should be referenced correctly using CU Harvard style (See Moodle).

2D drawings could include a suitable, necessary detail drawing ( ie, not just one forthe sake of trying to obtain more marks, it has to be there for a reason)

A necessary section drawing (Google the word necessary).

Show evidence of practicing in an appendix.

    Use a BS8888 recommended scales.

Show evidence of having studied BS8888.

    Use correct lines and linetypes.

Third angle symbol present on border.

    Border correct.

Dimensioned efficiently and thoughtfully (find examples in library to learn from)

    Folded correctly.

You are unlikely to become a high level draftsperson overnight, this is a task thatmust be practiced and developed so allow yourself the time and space to developthis skill. Your first attempt need not be the one you eventually hand in. As anengineer you will be constantly required to prepare or read draft drawings, so the

more time you spend on it, the clearer it becomes. In using CAD you must allow yourself the time to model the product as well, so itwont necessarily (note Google the word, necessarily) be easier or quick er to useCAD.
