Following on from last weeks brief note about WorldDiabetes Day, the following information may be of interestto families.
Type 1 Diabetes*We don't fully understand what causes type 1 diabetes, but genes and things in the environment are probablyimportant.*In childhood diabetes the pancreas can't make enoughinsulin, causing the blood sugar to be too high. Diabetes inchildren almost always needs treatment with insulininjections.*Frequent passing of urine, increased thirst and drinking, weight loss, tiredness and mood changes are commonsymptoms.*There is nothing you can do to prevent getting type 1diabetes.*Type 1 diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar orany other foods.*Diabetes is not contagious.
Type 2 Diabetes*Type 2 diabetes usually affects older people, but isbecoming more common in younger people.
*Important risk factors are being overweight with anunhealthy diet and not enough exercise. Some lesscommon forms of type 2 diabetes can affect non-obesepeople, they usually have a strong family genetic riskfactor.*Type 2 diabetes can often be treated with an improvedhealthy food plan, exercise and tablets, but insulin mayalso be needed.

World Action Day for the environmentOn Saturday 24th October it was a day to celebrate the
bottle tops we had been collecting. New Zealand started
a day of environmental action which was supported by
over 180 countries around the world. Room 9 had
collected most bottle tops and we made a huge Carbonfootprint to decorate the cathedral steps. Lots of other
schools had also collected bottle tops and made things
for the display. There were bottle top banners and
bottle top men all over the place. The day was to tell
people that we want to reduce levels of carbon dioxide
to 350 parts per million which should help reduce global
warming. The environment minister came to the event to
see our work and said he was meeting with other leaders
in Copenhagen in December to discuss pollution. We had
lots of fun collecting our bottle tops and telling people
about climate change.Jacob P Room 9
