A Guide to Giving &
Getting Involved
8/4/2019 10664 Guide to Giving PAGES-Combined
2/16
Financial SupportWe ask every parent to make an Annual Fund
contribution at the beginning of each school year.
To the extent that you are financially able, we alsoencourage you to participate in fundraising that
supports building projects and endowment. We also
ask for your support of fundraising events that are
sponsored by Shipley throughout the year.
Active ParticipationIn addition, we encourage you to take an active part inyour childs education perhaps by being involved in
the classroom when asked, attending athletics and arts
events, joining the Annual Fund team, or volunteering
at events such as Shipley Shops, Secret Gardens, or
the Spring Auction.

Financial Support
Shipley is a dynamic learning environment
staffed by dedicated and experienced teachers.
Tuition, however, does not cover the entire cost
of educating each child. Shipley must raise
additional funds each year in order to prepare
our students properly to thrive in a complex and
interdependent world.
The Annual FundIndependent schools depend
on Annual Fund gifts to bridge
the gap between tuition and the
actual cost of providing a quality
education. The Annual Fundhelps ensure that students study
a challenging curriculum in small
classes with an exceptional faculty.
Every member of the Shipley
community is asked to support the
Annual Fund.

Why does the School ask for a contribution in
addition to my tuition payment?Because tuition does not fully cover the cost of a Shipley
education, the School relies on contributions from a
variety of donorsparents, alumni, faculty and staff,
grandparents, and parents of alumni. The size of these
gifts varies, but every gift is important. Many Shipley
parents have stepped forward with gifts at the Leadership
Council level of $1,000 or more. This level of givinghelps the School meet the educational needs of the
entire Shipley community.
Why doesnt the School raise tuition to cover alloperating expenses?
Tuition must be competitive with comparable area
schools. Raising tuition significantly above that
competitive level may discourage qualified students fromapplying, which only hurts the whole community. Shipley
has the responsibility to seek additional revenue in order
to maintain a reasonable tuition structure.
When will I be asked for a contribution to theAnnual Fund?
In early October, you will receive a mailing that will inviteyour Annual Fund support of Shipley and your child.
We ask that you make your gift or pledge at that time.
In November, parent volunteers at each grade level will
make follow-up calls to answer your questions and to
encourage your participation. These parent volunteers
are critical to the success of this vital fundraising effort.

So how much does Shipleyexpect me to give?
The School expects each family to
give according to their means, and
we hope every family will find a way
to help. All families, regardless ofany financial assistance they may
receive, are asked to participate in
the Annual Fund. Each contribution
makes a difference in the life of the
School and the quality of education
that your child receives.
Why is participation soimportant?
High levels of participation
show School leadership and
the surrounding community
that parents are willing to invest
in their childrens future and
support the Schools mission. It
signals constituent confidence
so the School can reliably move
forward with strategic plans. It
demonstrates to philanthropic
foundations that the School is
strong, united, and worthy of
outside support.
Capital Needs
Periodic capital campaigns
raise additional non-operating
funds for major efforts like new
construction and increasing the
Schools endowment. Thesefunds can significantly enhance
and improve facilities, faculty
salaries, and financial aid. Capital
contributions are generally
pledged over three to five years.
Are we expected to give toboth?
When asked, we hope that you
will support both to the best of
your ability. However, because the
Annual Fund covers immediateoperating expenses, we ask that
you make it your philanthropic
priority and that capital gifts be
made in addition to your Annual
Fund gift.
What about endowment? Why is that important?
Endowment is the Schools
savings account and provides
long-term financial stability.
Annual income from the
investment of our endowment is
used to pay expenses not covered
by tuition, the Annual Fund, or
other sources. The endowment
provides security for the Schools
future and helps to support
financial aid, faculty salaries, and
professional development.

Volunteer
Participation
Opportunities
We know that students do better in a school that
is a real community, a school in which they can
forge strong relationships with adults. We also
know that students do better when their parents, alumni, and other friends are involved in their
school. Shipley volunteers are crucial to this
process.
Steven S. Piltch, Head of School
Shipley strives to improve the quality of
campus life by providing programs and events
that encourage participation by the whole
school community. We welcome parents as
our partners in the education of their child.
There are many opportunities for parents to
get involved at Shipley and we encourage
parents to become an active part of our
community.

Admissions Ambassadors
We know that word of mouth is
our most powerful marketing tool,
and in that sense every Shipley
parent is an ambassador for the
School. Admissions Ambassadorsare a pool of volunteers who
support Shipleys admissions
efforts by helping at Shipley
Open Houses, sharing their
Shipley stories with applicants,
congratulating accepted students,
welcoming new families, andmore.
Annual Fund
Parents, alumni, faculty and staff,
parents of alumni, grandparents,
and friends work with the Annual
Fund staff to raise unrestrictedfunds. The efforts of over 130
volunteers raised close to $1.4
million in the 2010-2011 fiscal
year.

Parent of Hannah 17 and
Sarah 19
My family has been
a part of the Shipleycommunity for the past
six years. During this
time, I have been an
active volunteeras a
homeroom parent, a grade coordinator, the Lower
School coordinator, co-chair of Shipley Shops, and
parent guide for Shipley Today. Throughout all of theseexperiences, I have enjoyed having the opportunity to
meet other dedicated parent volunteers, working with
the wonderful faculty and employees of Shipley, and
being able to use some of my non-parenting skills for
the good of our community. For me, volunteering at
Shipley enables me to give back to a school that has
given so much to my children and to connect with thewider Shipley community.
Betsy Balderston
Parent of Caleb 06,
David 08, and Mark 11
We give to Shipley out ofa sense of gratitude for
how the teachers, coaches,
music and play directors,
and other caring adults
in the community have
challenged and encouraged our sons to find their own
true talents and passions. Shipley prepared them wellfor college and life beyond; they are compassionate
citizens of the world. We also give because we
understand the need is real. Tuition alone cannot cover
the full costs of the Shipley program, and those of us
who believe in what Shipley does have to step up and
help close the gap through the Annual Fund.

A Generous Community
Supports Shipleys Mission
Educating a child requires more than a great
faculty and curriculum it requires generous parent
involvement. Parents, grandparents, and others who
care about your childs education are encouraged
to participate actively in daily life at Shipley and
provide financial support beyond tuition.
This partnership of financial support, active
participation, and a school with a clear mission
and vision spells success for the children you have
entrusted to us.
Shipley relies on the support and involvement of
our entire community including trustees, parents, alumni, faculty
and staff, grandparents,
and parents of alumni.
Through coordinated
fundraising efforts and
special events, we
provide a variety of
meaningful ways to
become involved.
