Chess ({ah – pronounced shahk – in Slavic languages) isdeeply rooted among people throughout the world. Let’ssee how this is reflected in the languages of the variouschess, and rather less chess inclined, nations!Looking at geography, one finds in Poland, on theborder with Belorus, the village of Szachy, the village ofPionki (Pawns) similarly in Poland, and in Russia, below St. Peterburg, the ancient town of [ahmatovowhere, among others, the famous poet Aleksander Blokwas born. In the middle of St.Peterburg, which is un-doubtedly one of the chess centres of the world, there is ahill called [ahmatnaja. Beside Elista, the capital ofKalmikia, the President of FIDE and of Kalmikia, KirsanIljum‘inov, ordered the construction of Chess City, where chess players at the 33rd Chess Olympiad resided, and which is intended to become the chess centre of theworld. In Germany, the village of Stroebeck is known to theentire chess world, all of whose inhabitants, withoutexception, play chess! This story is repeated in Sloveniain Stari trg ob Kolpi, where several generations ofprimary school children have already been familiarisedwith the game of kings, and the day is not far off whenwe will be able to write about a Slovene Stroebeck!Emanuel Lasker had a summer weekend in the smalltown of Thyrov by Berlin, and after the Second WorldWar, the locals called one of the streets Emanuel LaskerStrasse. Streets are called after chess players in variouscountries. So there is a Vidmar street in Ljubljana, andin Vr{i~ in Yugoslavia, a street named after Bora Kosti},one of the first Yugoslav grandmasters. There’s a monument to Mihail Talj in Riga, and simi-larly a monument in Erevan to Tigran Petrosjan, andthe eighth world champion also has his own street inErevan. The greatest honour is shown to chess players in theNetherlands. In the very centre of Amsterdam there isMax Euwe square, in which stands a huge chessman. The square is a popular gathering point for people fromall over the world. Only fifty metres from the square islocated the Jan Donner bridge, named after the secondDutch grandmaster. Max Euwe also has his own avenuein the centre of Rotterdam. The record holder is certainly the Dutch town of Utrecht, which has even named a whole quarter after chess andchess players! One can walk down Staunton street, followed by Rokadenstraat, Paardstraat, Pionstraat,Loperstaat, Damenstraat, Grootmesterplein. There’s aMax Euwe Square, of course, and Jan Donner Passage.Etc., etc.!But why talk of streets – chess players even have theirown planet! Not big, it’s true, with a diameter of »only«about 10 kilometres, and also not very close, but none-theless! The planet was called after the great chess playerAleksander Aljehin in 1977!

CHESS TOPONYMY – A LITTLE IN JESTAND A LITTLE FOR REAL

The great Rumanian aficionado of chess problems andstudies, Wolfgang Pauli, was also a well-known astrono-mer. In 1929 he discovered a comet (barely 22 years old!)and the comet was immediately called after him!The main square in Granada, in Spanish Andalusia, iscalled Plaza Campomanes. Our research didn’t manageto confirm whether it was named after the famous presi-dent of FIDE or some other local worthy from the past.Plenty of links with chess can be found among sur-names from all over the world: [ahovi}, Matanovi},Matulovi}, Matvejeva, Blocker, Turov, Damski, Koroljev,King, Matlak... And that’s just counting the grandmas-ters and international masters!A popular game among the Slovene chess team is com-posing various chess teams according to professionsexpressed in surnames. What do you think of the»pawns’ team«: Dorfman, Bauer, Neubauer,Sommerbauer, Nijboer and De Boer? A very solid team! And now look at the Tatar team, which will probablynever represent its ten million strong nation at anycompetition: Barejev, Kamski, Jusupov, Sakajev, Dautov,Ibrahimov and reserve Galjamova. Candidates for anOlympic medal!Only two pictures of chess players have to date foundtheir way onto money in their countries. Jose RaoulCapablanca has for many years gazed proudly from asmall Cuban coin, and a portrait of Paul Keres deco-rates the Esthonian banknote for 5 kron. The surnames of chess players are written in variousways in different countries. So Slovenia’s Mihalj~i{inwas renamed in Mexico according to the Chinese: Mihal^i [in, and the famous Russian author of chess text-books, Lisicin, as Li Si Cin. The Russo-Dutch grandmas-ter, today selector of the Netherlands men’s team,Sosonko, is proud of the really sympathetic Koreansurname: So Son Ko...The well-known Malaysian chess patron Dato Han, avery wealthy man, demonstrates a great sense of hu-mour. One of his passions are racehorses, of which hehas quite a number in his stables, and he calls themafter famous chess players! He began with Steinitz, andwhen he ran out of names of the greatest chess players, grandmasters of the second order got their turn. So thefamous Lasker and Capablanca still compete for thehighest awards in English hippodromes!

    Adrijan Mihalj~i{in

The article is still in process of creation, I wouldlike to write a book about this (and similar)interesting theme. I would therefore ask all chessplayers and guests of the 35th Chess Olympiad tosend me any possible data not mentioned in thearticle (in person, or leave the data at the PressCentre). I will be very grateful! A. M.

Kaj menite o »reprezentancikmetov«: Dorfman, Bauer, Neubauer, Sommerbauer,Nijboer in De Boer? Zelo solidna ekipa! Sedaj papoglejte ekipo Tatarov, ki verjetno nikdar ne bopredstavljala svojega desetmilijonskega naroda nakak{nem tekmovanju: Barejev, Kamski, Jusupov,Sakajev, Dautov, Ibrahimov in rezerva Galjamova.

    Adrijan Mihalj~i{in

Zato prosimvse {ahiste in goste 35. M.
