Black Dog Publishing

The reason I would like to work for this company is because it combines 2 of my favourite pastimes, Design & Reading. Black dog specialises in beautifully produced illustrated books that represent a fresh, eclectic take on contemporary culture. Starting from a base in art and architecture. As their remit broadens, they are expanding into new territories and gaining a broader audience around the world. Through that they stay true to our founding principles; to take a daring, innovative approach to their titles, to maintain high production values and authoritative content and to produce books that challenge, provoke and entertain.

Canongate

Canongate.TV is a new website that’s all about channelling great content for you to watch, listen to and read. In my work I have started creating some video works myself and here is a publishing house very much beginning to dip its toe in to video much like I am. They innovative and intelligent projects and spread the word about ones they find.

US Design

Us is a multi-disciplinary award winning design & direction studio, whose work covers directing music videos/commercials, brand identity, printed literature, advertising, installations & web design/build.They believe that projects should stem from good ideas no matter how big or small. In their studio they look to create work that excites, inspires and most importantly meets the needs of the client.Although the studio delves into web design, which is an area I am not keen on, the other work they produce is fantastic. Having met the guys and a follower of their work I really think I could fit in at this studio.

Faber & Faber

This publishing house is one of the biggest names and I would like to add to their large amount of amount. This company has published some of my favourite titles and it would be great to give something back.The company has been around for centuries, changing its name a few times in the process. It still remains one of the most respected publishing houses to this date. Producing books from a wide range of subject areas I think this book publishers would be just as varied, as I would like.

Accept and Proceed

They are designers that work in print interactive media and spaces; they engineer brand identity and establishing or reinforcing strategic foundations. They create a large amount of printed media and are expert in typography, all areas that interest me. The guys have a good sense of humour and have similar interests having seen the designs of the great sporting moments.

Phaidon

Is a book-publishing house with offices in London and New York as well as many others. They produce some of the nicest books I have ever seen and I would like to add to their already sterling portfolio. The books they produce are in a wide variety of areas from arts to cooking and all would provide certificate variety in which to keep interests very high. During the passed few years I have collect books made by Phaidon purely for design reference regardless of content. I think this shows how highly I rate there work and would be proud to become an employee there.

Gestalten

Is another book publishing house. The books they produce are in a wide variety of areas from architecture to cooking instructions and all would provide certificate variety in which to keep interests high. Gestalten seem to never have to the same style twice and I think this would be good practice and also a hard yet fun task to work with.

Penguin

Penguin is one of the most famous of the book publishing world having published many greats through the decades. I would like to help them grow further into the future with increasingly better design. The company publishes a huge range of books new and old, regularly reinventing old classics. I think this job would be ideal as once explained to me as being “A great job, we just read and design.” This sentence by one of its designers very much intrigued me, as they are two of my favourite things.I am currently entering the competition this year to win the prize of an internship.

Is a small publishing house who has produced almost all of my favourite books. Although I am not too keen on there current designs, I would like to work there to try and make the design better. Also liking to write my own material it would be good to thrive off a similar authors as inspiration.

This is a world wide book publishers who cover a wide range of subject areas and a company that take great pride in the design of their books. I would like to join there ever expanding company and learn some of the skills that their design teams have gathered over the years.
