Knights Prayer Rally in Albany Gets National Coverage National and local media outlets covered the Knights of Columbus’ annual prayer rally in Albany on May 10th. The Associated Press, one of the largest news agencies in the world, featured a photograph of Grand Knight Joe Mansfield in his Color Corps regalia prominently atop its coverage of the rally, which appeared in news publications across the country and around the Internet. (See photo on prior page) The A.P. story focused on a $1.5 million pledge by the Washington-based National Organization for Marriage to oppose same-sex marriage legislation in New York. The rally and pledge came at time when “lobbyists, clergy, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and legislators head for a six-week legalization showdown with global implications,” according to the article. The National Organization for Marriage also offered its expertise after recent success against same-sex marriage bills and in a New York congressional primary. The group takes credit for derailing a gay marriage bill in Maryland, and blocking a bill in Rhode Island this year. The National Organization for Marriage pledged to spend $500,000 for advertising and lobbying in Albany. It also plans to spend $1 million to fund and oppose candidates in the 2012 legislative elections. A.P. further reported, “in Albany, the New York State Council Knights of Columbus opposed same-sex marriage as part of its annual prayer rally.” Not surprisingly, our local Gannett-owned paper, The Journal News, ignored the rally in its print edition. It did, however, cover it in its “Politics on the Hudson” political commentary blog. The May 10th blog entry entitled, “Catholics hold rally as gay-marriage debate continues,” began:

Knights Prayer Rally in Albany Gets National Coverage (continued) “The Knights of Columbus is holding its annual prayer rally in Albany today. Hundreds of people are praying and asking lawmakers to support them in opposing same-sex marriage and the Reproductive Health Act, which would update New York’s abortion laws in the event of action on the federal level that limits or restricts abortion. The Knights of Columbus are also praying for the state to reimburse Catholic schools for 100 percent of the costs they incur in complying with state mandates, as required by a 37-year-old state law.” Rick Ditrio, FDD, the Knights’ state Catholic Family Director, was noted in blog as saying that this is the ninth year for the prayer rally, where “he and other volunteers laid out hand-made rosary beads that were being given to participants at the rally.” He was quoted as saying:

“This year the sanctity of marriage is definitely at the forefront in a lot of our minds. We do believe that a marriage is between a man and a woman, and as a Catholic, that’s my belief. And we’re here to make sure our legislators understand that that’s what we believe.”

After noting that Gov. Cuomo has made passage of a gay-marriage law in New York one of his top three priorities for the remainder of the legislative session, the Journal News blog continued with more quotes from Mr. Ditrio:

“We think that everyone has a right to voice their opinion,” Ditrio said. “Our opinion is deeply embedded in our faith and we also have the right to express our opinions, and that’s what we’re here doing.”

Marriage is a sacrament for Catholics, he said. ”There are other ways that things can be handled for different populations. We have no ill will toward anyone at all. We think that they should be welcome to do what they think is right. They’re children of God, same as we’re children of God,” he said.

Knights Prayer Rally in Albany Gets National Coverage (continued)

The blog entry concluded by noting that in a handout given to people at the rally, the state Catholic Conference said homosexual persons sometimes face unjust discrimination, which it opposes.

“But the state need not overturn the very nature of marriage as it has always been understood to address such practices. Clearly, the state can review whatever benefits or privileges that it has through the years conferred on married couples and, in cases where true discrimination may be at play, fashion legislative remedies,” the flier states.

Duties of Council Officers

INSIDE and OUTSIDE GUARDS

The guards have

responsibilities

similar to the

Warden, but distinct

differences. The

outside guard tends

to the outer door

admitting visitors

and members to the

inner door. Once at

the inner door, the

inside guard checks

to make sure that

their membership

cards are current.

The symbol of the guards is a shield with crossed halberds and a key hung

from a white ribbon, representing their power as sentries at the door. The

halberd is the traditional arm of the Vatican’s Swiss Guard, which safeguards

the doors of St. Peter’s Basilica, the Apostolic Palace and the Holy Father.

On May 6, 1527, 147 out of 189 Swiss Guards, including their commander,

were killed defending the life of Pope Clement VII and the papacy during the

infamous sack of Rome by Protestant mercenaries. Leading them was Charles

III, Duke of Bourbon, who was killed before his army breached the walls. In

the battle, the heroic Swiss Guards died in St. Peter’s by the altar defending the

Pope as the remaining 42 hastened Clement VII to safety at Castel

Sant’Angelo.
