Commander’s Message by Onis Budde, AP
The Ship’s Log Newsletter of America’s Boating Club, Green Bay Squadron A unit of District 10, United States Power Squadrons®
Summer 2020
A huge feather in our cap is promoting safety. Safety is an objective for every course and seminar
we offer. We have adopted the slogan, “Just Wear It!” because we know life jackets save lives.
Chuck Reetz and Dan Baker have approached vessel safety checks while taking extra precautions
to ensure their own and others’ safety this summer. In the interest of safety, the Bridge voted to
suspend our usual summer activities, so we did not hold a June picnic, swap meet, and fire safety
event. Likewise, we suspended a summer rendezvous in August. But we can meet virtually!
Something New—A Casual Get-Together By Computer or Phone! I recently scheduled our first
virtual casual get-together using GoToMeeting. It will be on Wednesday, August 19th from 6:00 to
7:30 p.m. You can come late, leave early, or stay the entire time. It will be different from our in-
person get-togethers as we will need to take turns talking, but I think it is worth a try.
It will be very easy for you to join the get-together on your computer, your smartphone, or even
from a landline phone. From any device that has a camera, you will be able to hear and see oth-
ers. If you prefer to be heard and not seen, you can do that. If you don’t have a computer or other
device with video, you can just dial the phone number, then enter the “access code” when
prompted to join us in a conference call. It has been a very long time since we have been able to
meet, and this may be a good solution until it is safe to get together in person.
The get-together link will be https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/540201717. If you prefer to call in,
the phone number will be 1 (646) 749-3122 with Access Code 540-201-717. (By the way, you can
do both if you want audio on the phone and visual on your computer.) You will get this information
again in an email message when we get closer to August 19th.
Mark your calendar! Let’s try it!
Be safe, everyone.
In a normal year your Commander’s message would be loaded with news about
recent events and plans for upcoming activities, but this year has been anything
but normal! The Covid-19 pandemic has changed how we operate, but we are
doing some important work at the local, District 10, and National levels, and we
are continuing to plan for a time when we can get together again. Perhaps we will
be able to have a geodetic mark recovery day in September. Stay tuned!

D-10 is seeking instructors who are willing to help teach online
classes during the pandemic. Also for people to be resource and
information contacts for D-10 ( Websites, Membership. Pro-
grams, etc). This is a way to get involved in activities. If you
have a skill you would like to share contact me and I will sub-
mit your name.
National has come out with online ABC and boat handling
classes. I am currently studying the material and requirements
for these programs. There are a number of new online classes
on the National Website. The Wisconsin DNR has opened their
website to register new ABC classes as of 1 July. For classes
the DNR has a number of requirements to be met, such as class
size ( 6 foot spacing ) masks for all, hand sanitizer, etc. We will
have to see how the pandemic progresses but as our class gener-
ally starts in February/March we have time to sort the details
out for ABC.
If any one is interested in a class contact me as some other
squadrons are trying online classes, and registering students
from all squadrons. A Navigation class just started
Our 80th Anniversary as a squadron is scheduled for the 16 Oc-
tober dinner meeting. A presentation on our history and service
to the community will be presented.

TASK FORCE NEWS
David Budde
The District 10 Task Force has been meeting regularly for over two years now, and we are in the
“implementation” stage of our work. Our current focus is on marketing America’s Boating Club to
promote membership and member involvement. Brochures and presentation materials are devel-
oped and ready to use when we can safely go to marinas and boating clubs.
We identified a number of categories that play into marketing which may impede an individual
squadron’s ability to work efficiently and effectively. These categories cover a wide range of skill
sets, some of which an individual squadron may not have. We need people who are able to an-
swer questions and give others tips, or explain how to do very specific things. For example, if
Squadron A needs some help with ideas for developing youth activities, they can refer to the Dis-
trict’s list of Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) in that category and contact an SME to get some ad-
vice. As another example, Squadron B needs some assistance using Microsoft Excel, goes to the
District SME list, and contacts a member of Squadron C who is good at getting around on an Excel
spreadsheet. We will work together as a District to fill in each category with names and contact
information of members who have particular skill-sets. This will make it easier to get over some
typical hurdles within a squadron.
The following list identifies marketing-related skill-sets. If you could respond to questions or pro-
vide a little coaching to another member or group on one or more of the following skill-sets, please
volunteer to be a Subject Matter Expert (SME). This is not a huge, time-consuming responsibility,
but whatever tips or know-how you can provide another person or group is huge! You will not at-
tend meetings, work on projects, or write reports. You are just saying you are willing to share what
you know with someone who needs it.
Please volunteer to be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for a skill-set in the following list! Remem-ber, you don’t do the work. When contacted, you would provide tips and advice to those who are working on something. Contact me or Commander Onis Budde to put down your name as an SME.
