Are there really millions of years in creation? Does evolution fit into the Bible? These are the many questions asked by many Christians and unbelievers alike. Can we know the answer and does it really matter anyway? We can know the answer to all these questions. God has spoken and has answered each of these questions from His Word. It does really matter what you believe about the creation account. Why? Doubt in creation leads to doubt upon the rest of scripture. It tears down the authority of the Bible. Read Psalm 11:3. We could spend days and weeks talking, debating, and studying about these subjects. People have been talking about these subjects more intensely for the last 100-200 years. So where do we begin? Well, let us begin where God begins. Read Genesis 1:1-2:3. Lets look and see what the Bible, Jesus Christ, and what the word “day” all say about creation. Lets approach this subject with an open mind willing to be taught.

THE BIBLE WAY TO HEAVEN

Realize That God Loves You. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).

The Bible Says That All Men Are Sinners. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory to God.” (Romans 3:23).

God’s Word Also Says That Sin Must Be Paid For. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

The Good News Is That Christ Paid for Our Sins. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8).

We Must Personally Pray and Receive Christ by Faith as Our Personal Saviour. The Bible Says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).

Is the earth 6,000 years old? Was the world created in six days? Did we evolve from molecules and monkeys? Are there really millions of years in creation? Does evolution fit into the Bible? “Questions Answered from the Bible” Lesson 1

Your Thoughts

What the Bible Says About Creation God begins with the creation of the world and all that is contained in it in six days. Each day of creation is stated with a number and the phrase “evening and the morning”. What does an evening and a morning make up? A day or a 24 hour period. What is a day made up of? A 24 hour period of time. The only way to read in millions of years is through outside influences. It is just not there. Science and the evolutional theory cause people to try and “read in” these millions of years into the Biblical account.

Read Exodus 20:11. This is speaking of a seven day work week. Six days of work and one day of rest just as we know it today. This gives clear understanding that God meant literal days for creation. Read II Timothy 3:16 and Psalm 33:6 & 9.

Jesus spoke much about creation in the New Testament. Jesus confirms the Genesis account of creation. Read Mark 10:6. Christ places Adam and Eve as the first humans at the beginning of creation. Read Mark 13:19. Christ places man’s suffering near the beginning of creation. Death did not come until Adam sinned. This does not allow millions of years of suffering & death in animals before man was created. Read John 5:45-47. Notice the emphasis Christ places upon Moses and what he wrote. Christ links not believing what Moses wrote to not believing anything Christ taught. Remember that Moses wrote Genesis and Exodus 20:11. Christ emphasizes that a low view of creation equals a low view in all of scripture.

What Jesus Christ Says About Creation

Christ traces history from the Genesis creation account. Explore the first four books of the New Testament. Christ beings with creation then traces history through Adam and Eve being the first married couple; Abel being the first prophet killed; the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah; Lot and his wife; Noah and the flood, Moses and the serpent; Moses and manna; the miracles of Elijah, and the prophet Jonah. Christ begins were God begins, at creation. What the Word “Day” Says About Creation

Each time day is used it has a different meaning. The first is a general period of time, the second is 12 literal days, and the third is a part of a 24 hour period day. We see that “day” can have different meanings when used. So which definition do we use? The Bible is the best commentary on itself. (Refer to the insert in this study guide for an in-depth explanation on the use of the word “day”.) If we take the writings literal we see 24 hour days. Exodus 20:11 explains clearly what is meant by the word “day” in Genesis chapter one. Only outside influences would cause us to think differently. The world has attempted to tear down and cast doubt upon the Bible.

Some would argue that the word “day” in Genesis chapter one is not a literal 24 hour day. Day can have more than one meaning in English. Examine this sentence, “Back in my grandfather’s day, it took 12 days to drive across the country during the day”.

More on the word “day” which is “yom” in the Hebrew

1. A classic, well respected Hebrew-English lexicon (a dictionary) has seven headings and many subheadings for the meaning of yom- but it defines the creation days of Genesis 1 as ordinary days under the heading “day as defined by evening and morning.”

2. A number and the phrase “evening & morning” are used with each of the six days of creation (Gen. 1:5, 8, 13, 19, 23, 31).

3. Outside Genesis 1, yom is used with a number 359 times, and each time it means an ordinary day. Why would Genesis 1 be the exception?

4. Outside Genesis 1, yom is used with the word “evening” or “morning” 23 times. “Evening” and “morning” appear in association, but without yom, 38 times. All 61 times the text refers to an ordinary day. Why would Genesis 1 be the exception?

5. In Genesis 1:5, yom occurs in context with the word “night.” Outside of Genesis 1, “night” is used with yom 53 times, and each time it means an ordinary day. Why would Genesis 1 be the exception? Even the usage of the word “light” with yom in this passage determines the meaning as ordinary day.

6. There are words in the biblical Hebrew (such as olam or qeden) that are very suitable for communicating long periods of time, or indefinite time, but none of these words are used in Genesis 1.

Dr. James Barr (Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford University), who himself does not believe Genesis is true history, nonetheless admitted as far as the language of Genesis 1 is concerned that, “So far as I know, there is no professor of Hebrew or Old Testament at any world-class university who does not believe that the writer(s) of Gen. 1-11 intended to convey to their readers the ideas that (a) creation took place in a series of six days which were the same as the days of 24 hours we now experience (b) the figures contained in the Genesis genealogies provided by simple addition the chronology from the beginning of the world up to the later stages in the biblical story (c) Noah’s Flood was understood to worldwide and extinguish all human and animal life except for those in the ark.”
