Rector’s Message

The end of last week proved to be one of the high points of the term with the Athletics Sports Day,

brought forward from Saturday as a result of the expectation of snow on the weekend to Thursday and

Friday afternoons. The boys competed with immense verve, enjoying the competition with each other,

in blustery conditions and some excellent times were recorded. Founders snatched victory from

Farfield in the dying moments of Friday afternoon as the temperature suddenly dropped by 10 degrees.

The final results were : 1st Founders (531), 2nd Farfield (519), 3rd Pascoe (450), 4th McCormick (395),

5th Ralfe (387), 6th Baines (382), 7th Mackenzie (366), 8th Tatham (359) and tie 9th East & West (346).

Athletics Awards and Records

The new records broken at this Athletics Sport Day were: Ruben Visagie (Farfield) - 9 min 32, 35

sec in the U15 3000m and Edrich van Loggerenberg (Founders) – 16,86m in the U16 Shot Put.

Sure enough, on Saturday and Sunday, we had a dusting of snow at Michaelhouse – not really enough

for a huge snow fight here at the school, but some boys were able to go further afield and photograph

themselves and their friends enjoying the wintry conditions.

President’s Award

The President’s Award grew out of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and has been created specifically

for South African pupils. It is a prestigious award, reflecting a range of talents, skills and service and

we are delighted to announce that Anthony Turner and Alexander Brits have achieved a Gold Award

with Freddie Waller attaining a Silver Award this year.

Sports Achievements

Canoeing

Our canoeists participated in the Table Mountain Descent race held this past Sunday with these

results: 1st overall - Matthew Millward, U18 – 2nd Jack Edmonds and 3rd overall, 3rd Murray

Behn and 5th overall. U16 – 1st Robert Butcher and 9th overall, 2nd Stuart Nielson and 3rd Harrison

Field.

Tennis

Josh Heath competed in the Inter-Provincial tennis tournament held in Pretoria. He played 3 singles,

3 doubles and 3 mixed doubles matches, winning 5 and losing 4. The KZN team came 2nd overall.

Matric Dance – 17 September 2021

The Matric Dance will take place on Friday, 17 September. Due to Covid regulations the event will

be outdoors on the lawns near the Archangel Michael’s Fountain in front of the school. If you wish

to see the décor, you will be able to do so from 13:00-14:00 on the Friday afternoon, after which the

venue will be closed and only invited guests will be allowed at the venue.

Our special guests and their partners will arrive from 17:00-17:30. Parents will be able to view the

arrival of guests from a designated reserved area. Traffic for parents wanting to view the arrival will

be directed to the grass lawns in front of the tennis courts. If you, as a parent, are driving your son to

the drop-off area, you will be directed to the bridge in front of Archangel Michael and from there to

the lawn in front of the tennis courts.

Please adhere to all Covid-regulations. We are looking forward to a wonderful night. If you have any

Bus Bookings / School Transport

A reminder that school closes for the end of 3rd Term on Friday 17 September and school transport

will depart from school at 08h30. Please ensure that all bus bookings for Johannesburg, Pavilion and

King Shaka are made before midday on Wednesday 8 September.

Out of country parents are reminded to please confirm flights with the Transport Co-Ordinator, as

soon as possible, to ensure the Covid-19 tests can be done timeously.

Community Partnership Trust – Partners for Possibility

Over the past 2½ years the Michaelhouse Community Partnership Trust has had the privilege of

partnering in leadership, and contributing to 16 schools in our community though the Partners for

Possibility programme. Eight of our past and present parents and staff, including 2 Old Boys

volunteered to step into allied leadership roles and out of their comfort zones, making a meaningful

commitment to education in our community neighbouring Michaelhouse. We would love to continue

this impact in 2022 and volunteers are encouraged to contact Mrs Karen McKenzie on

[email protected] for a conversation of “What if?”

For those parents who geographically are unable to contribute in the Midlands to PfP with their

skills, energy and commitment, why not consider the Execs Back to School programme,

operating in all our major cities in South Africa or with a virtual option available too? Have a

World School Awards

We encourage members of the Michaelhouse family to cast a vote in support of Michaelhouse in the

2021/22 World School Awards. Please find attached pdf with link to vote.

4th Term – Change of dates

Please note the change in the 4th term: it runs from Monday 04 October to Tuesday 30 November,

the final day being a day earlier than previously advertised. This change is to facilitate our staff

getting to venues where they will be marking IEB exams.

End of Term Arrangements – Mr Allan Laing

With the various Outdoor Education activities scheduled for the end of this term there are some dates

and times to take note of. Please remember that all local school transport, buses to

Johannesburg, Bloemfontein and Durban, including airport transfers will only depart on

Friday morning at 08h30. International connections are by arrangement at the necessary

times.

A Block boys will end school on Thursday 16 September and will be able to be collected and depart

after 14h00. The Matric Ball is scheduled for Friday 17 September at 17h00 for 17h30.

B Block boys will return to school from their camp on Tuesday 14 September and are able to be

collected and depart from 12h00 onwards. Special school transport can be arranged for this day.

C Block boys will return form their Journey between 14h00 and 16h00 on Thursday 16

September. There is a closing Chapel Service for all C Block boys at 16h00 after which they are

able to be collected and depart.

D and E Block boys return to school Thursday 16 September by 14h00 and they may be collected

and depart for their holidays.

Parents are reminded that if they wish to use school transport on Friday this must be booked through

the normal channels. Please contact your Housemaster if you have any questions regarding the end

of term arrangements.

125 Tie and Cap Orders

While the ties, which were sourced locally, have been available since the beginning of the month,

various factors including the recent unrest and Transnet issues have delayed delivery of the caps

which were imported.

We have been led to believe that the caps cleared customs last week, and we can expect delivery

soon. A notification will be sent out via the Rector’s eNews as soon as orders are ready for

collection.

C Block Journey

The C Block Journey starts on Saturday with a Chapel service held, as with our assemblies, in the

Amphitheatre. This is the last Journey which Paul Fleischack, Senior Deputy Rector, will lead and

our huge thanks go to him for his commitment to the success of Outdoor Education over the years. I

have no doubt that Paul will outwalk and outcycle the boys and be more proficient than most at

paddling. He will also guide them and expect the best from them.

Over the years, the Journey has been refined: it is certainly now regarded as one of the highlights of

a boy’s Michaelhouse career, developing as it does an understanding of oneself, self-reliance,

outdoor hardiness and an appreciation of the magnificence of the countryside around us. Boys

frequently remark on what a life changing experience the Journey has proved to be.
