believe that it is o ur responsibility to be aware of both our strengths and our weaknesses a nd proceed accordin gly. It is o ur j ob, as members of the da nce community, to do our best to preserve our art fo nn as well as to educate and entertain the public . For this reason, negati ve fee lings about ourselves as performers and about our fe llow dancers should be closely examined to see if they are based in rea lity, o r o n shadow fee lin gs suc h as fea r of in adequ acy , limi ta ti o n , or powerl essness. We should also be aware of the danger that at ti mes our shadow selves may emerge on stage, in the fo rm of inappropriate behavior, or its opposi te: paralyzing stage frig ht.

In general, shadow work specifica ll y for dancers will probably center around stage fri ght, self-es teem issues, and ego (i.e., overconfidence that gets in the way of discriminati on and working toward better performance). The shadow within dance can also be fo und in certain movements that we may want to do in perfo nnance, but that are " no- no 's" because they are seen as being either too provocati ve, too unattracti ve, or undes irable in some other way. Yet dancing these "no-no's" in private can be incredibly freeing and lead to healing and transfomrntion and new ideas about the dance and movement on stage .

It is my hope that through shadow work, I can work to improve these things within myself and to help my fe llow dancers reach their full potent ials.

Inspired by her own encounters with the dance as a tool for emotional healing and spiritual growth, Kypri s, who holds master 's degrees in biology and counseling psychology, has created a series of moving meditations to help her students to tap into these powe, ful experiences. Her teaching and pe,formance work centers around the spiritual and emotional aspects of the dance, with special attention to the

concepts of the ele .. m•e•n-ts_ •• tl.ie_c.,ha_k_'r_a_s_. _a..,n_d_p_s_y_cl_w_l ... o_g.,.ic_a_l_a_.r..,,chetypes. ·~~ ~

Hello E ve ryone-

Am I in some kind o f bizarre feedback loop? Haven' t I been here befo re? I do remember that I promised my time away from producing, des igning,

and editing your magazette every month was a temporary s ituation, and that I would be re turn ing. It seems I had n' t been bl uffi ng.

Much has happened in the year or so that I' ve been gone. S AM EDA has blossomed into a vibrant and robust enti ty, served by many dedi cated and hardworking individuals who have devoted themselves to its growth and proliferati on. This magazette has a new name and a new look (which may continue to evolve). The job of produc ing thi s publicati on is spread over two or more weeks, and shared by more than just two over-worked and crabby ladi es (I refer to myself and the ever-enduring Theresa Freese, when back in the "bad old days," we hammered out thi s magazette a ll by ourselves-from scratch, sometimes from notes on cocktail napkins!) N ow most o f the content comes to me vi a email , ready fo r editing, copy fitting, and layout. What a joy the electro nic era has made this projec t 1

As for myself, I underwent a few changes (hope full y that can be regarded as "improveme nts" as well ). The 2 1-year battle with severe spinal arthriti s fin all y claimed my legs and resulted in so much pain , my life was not worth li ving. I submitted to " last-resort" spinal surgery, where in over 2/J of the spine below my waist was rem oved and replaced with metal "scaffolding." Following th is major surgery, a sys temic in fec ti on nearly took my li fe. But I made it. I'm doing fineeven better than anyone expected-and have reali sti c hopes of re turning to bell y dance by year 's end . Zowie. My fiance is elated . Oh yeah- I'm engaged to be married some time this year (I think) as well.

I'm happy to be back and I will do my best to continue to improve and develop thi s publicati on, making it a shining example of the dedicati on you all have to your beautiful dance. Thank you, Lynn , for doing some really ni ce things with The Papyrus (love the new title) and for making the S AMEDA membership happy to have had you as their magazette producer and des igner (I don' t think anyone missed me).

ex periencing the full depth of a ll that they have uncovered . Once the shadow has been ex perienced , it is possible to release what was fo und by destroy ing the mas k. Because nature abhors a vacuum, it is a good idea to go further with thi s exercise and make a new mask symboli zing the transformati on of the shadow to something less fri ghtening and less inhibiting to your personal growth. For example, you may make a shadow mask to symboli ze paralyzing despair. Once transformed, through meditati on and dance work, this mask may become acceptance, tranquilli ty, or some other re lated , but positive quality-a strength, if you will , instead of a weakness. T hrough thi s change, you may then act diffe rently in life situations that formerl y threw you into despair, and instead meet these same s ituati ons with acceptance or tranquillity.

One can also work to transform shadow qualiti es by working with the fi ve elements (Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit). In shadow, or Dark M oon work, the fiv e elements take on shadow qualities (Roderick, 1996). Noti ce that the shadow qualities are oppos ites, and yet not necessarily negative . In additi o n to the psycholog ica l facets put fort h by Wicca and by Roderick, I have associated performance properties and their shadow facets with the fi ve elements. These provide furth er tools for us as performers when working with the five elements and with the shadow.

ELEMENT PSYCHOLOGICAL SHADOW FACET PERFORMANCE SHADOW

FACET PROPERTY PROPERTY PERFORMANCE

Earth To Keep Silent To Resonate Skill Limitation

Air To know To Wonder Concentration Experimentation

Fire To Will To Surrender Intensity Vulnerability

Water To Dare To Accept Relaxation Anxiety

Spi rit To Transcend To Descend Inspiration Communion

The Shadow in Dance As dancers, performers, and ambassadors of the dance, we have additional

tasks when doing shadow work . It is in our best interest to as k ourselves what resides in our shadow that may be limiting our ability- in particul ar, our ability to stick to the di scipline of practicing our dance, to produce meaningful performance pieces, to perfo rm to our full potenti al once on stage, and to create a cohes ive and creati ve dance community. If we are to make ourselves public figures, I strongly

Finding the Shadow There are many ways to get in touch with the shadow. The methods that I

have used include meditati on, shadow dancing, and journaling. By its nature, the subconscious is di fficult to access through direct probing with our daily awareness. It is somehow more easily reached through dreams, daydreams, hypnosis, and other techniques that take us out of our ordinary conscious state. When we have spent a Ii fe time hiding our shadow fee lings and thoughts from ourselves, it should not be surpri sing that we require some creati ve ways to go about unearthing it '

Shadow med ita tion generally invo lves visualizing, during meditation, a descent or underworld journey of some kind (note that this is a different type of meditation from the Eas tern practi ce of sitting in stillness wi th a blank mind). This travel within our mind 's eye symbolizes the un locki ng of the deepest reaches of our own subconscious. The visuali zation of these symbols allows us to more eas ily bypass the logic circuits in our brains.

Shadow dancing is another way to communicate with the subconscious. Using a strong light or the light of the sun to throw a shadow on the wall or on the ground , one dances and dialogues with thi s shadow as if it were a separate person. One might ask, for example, "What do you want to tell me about yourself?" and proceed from there with an internal conversation (a sort of auditory creati ve visualization). This dialogue is a vari ation of something call ed the "open chair" method used by some therapists, and can be very powerful because it makes accessing the shadow materi al somehow safer by di stancing ourse lves fro m it at fi rst.

Shadow journaling is yet another way to unearth shadow materi al. To use this method, one listens to music while writing three pages of whatever comes to mind, holding in mind the intent to access shadow materi al. Often, the process will begin with things that seem inconsequential, and irrelevant to the exercise. However, as one continues to write, the hidden psyche usuall y surfaces because the conscious mind either grows tired or simply runs out of things to say.

Once the shadow is excavated, it is time to work toward transfonnati on, healing, and acceptance.

Healing the Shadow Cas ting light on the material in the shadow is onl y the beginning of the work.

After this, it is important to work toward some type of resolution of the uncovered in formation. Otherwise, we may be left in a worse state than when we began, with all these fr ightening fee lings and ideas and no idea what to do with them '

Mask-mak ing is a particul arl y powerfu l method that I have used to attune to the knowledge ob tai ned through illuminating the shadow. One creates a mask that personi fies their shadow self and dances whil e wearing it, thus ac knowledging and

Illuminating the ShadowUsing Bellydance to Reveal and Heal Our "Hidden Self"

shadow: 1. A dark figu re or image cast on a su,face by a body intercepting light. 2. Shade or comparative darkness) as in an area. 3. Darkness, esp. that coming after sunset. 4. Shelter; protection. 5. A slight suggestion; trace. 6. A specter or ghost. 7. A hint or fa int image or idea. 8. A mere semblance. 9. A reflected image. 10. The representation of the absence of light on a form. 11 . A period or instance of gloom, unhappiness, mistrust, doubt, dissension, or the like, as in fri endship or one's life. 12. A dominant, oppressive threat, influence, or atmosphere. 13. An inseparable companion.

The dictionary definition fo r the word shadow contains many shades of meaning, all of which can apply, in various ways, to the part of the human psyche that Carl Jung defined as the "shadow" or "personal unconscious." Jung, one of the early pioneers in the fi eld of psychology, and a pupil and protege of Freud 's, believed that the shadow was a part of the personality that exerted its influence at all times, regardless of whether a person was aware of its presence. For the purpose of my work, I roughly equate the shadow with the subconscious or unconscious part of our psyche. It is a part of us that contains our unexpressed desires , fears, emotions, and ideas about ourselves . For most of us, it is a repository of things we do not wish to acknowledge. Jung believed that any person undergoing thorough psychotherapy would eventuall y encounter the shadow naturally, without prompting, and that the confrontation with the shadow was the I sr test of courage on the inner journey. I would go further and say that anyone who looks within often and thoroughly enough (whether in therapy or not) will encounter their shadow. Because it is a hidden part of ourse lves, close self-examination naturally will bring it to light. Because the darkness within ourselves often stifl es or limits our daily acti ons, revealing its secrets by casting the light of our conscious thought on it is important to reali zing our full potential as arti sts and as human beings . This process can be fri ghtening, but if the materi al we bring to light is examined, experienced, and healed, it can free and heal us in ways that are far-reaching and sometimes surpri sing.

Rose-Van.ilia Granita is a wonderful springtime or anytime dessert. It has absolutely no fat (but I can' t say the same for sugar). A granita is an ice, like a sorbet, which will make your Vegan friends happy. Simple, yet elegant, it makes a great palate cleanser or dessert, and is terrifi c with foods from the Middle East, Mediterranean, Persia, and India.

Ingredients 1 whole vanilla bean 1/4 cup rose water

(obtain at your local Middle Eastern or Mediterranean market) 1 cup water 1/J cup granulated sugar (honey should also work fine)

Cut the vanilla bean down the center and scrape out the insides. Place the insides as well as the cut bean into a saucepan with the remaining ingredients. Bring the mixture to a boil. Stir occasionally, breaking up the vanilla bean bits. Make sure all the sugar is di ssolved, then remove from heat and let cool. Remove the vanilla bean husk and save it (you can still use it to flavor other dishes).

Place the mixture in a shal low metal pan (cover lightly with plastic), and place into the freezer. Stir and crush the lumps with a fork about every 30 minutes. Depending on your freezer, thi s may take 2-3 hours or more. The resulting granita should be firm, but not frozen solid . Scrape it with a fork before serving to fluff it up. Serve in chilled bowls or a chilled wine glass. Garnish with edible (pesticidefree) rose petals . Candied rose petals would be great too.

Servings: 2-3

She's got "it. " Her dance teacher from long ago recogni zed it, putting the sixyear-old onstage as a tap-dancing glow worm. Her first belly dance teacher saw it, ass igning her to perform at a party after onl y a couple short months of lessons. I saw it, sitting across from her in her art studio di scussing, well , every thing!

What she's got is lcind of indefin able. Some call it stage presence or charisma. You could say it is the ability to convince other people of your confidence, beauty,

ability a nd co ntro lwhe th e r o r no t yo u believe it yourself. I call it "mag ic."

Studying her as we spo ke, I ca me to a sudden reali zati on-she was not perfec t! But her mag ic was effec ti ve, because her warm smile, mischievous eyes, lush ha ir, a nd pe tite but equa ll y lush body had me convinced otherwise. I ' m no t quite sure if Sheerah herself believes that she possesses thi s mag ic, but she's heard it so o ft e n from o the rs, she's aware that she's got "somethin g." As

Sheerah put it, "a good performer needs three things-technical ability, style, and stage presence. And you can always learn technical ability!"

Her first belly dance teacher teamed her with another student who possessed "all the technical ability," while Sheerah had the "stage presence." They were quite a team! But don't be fooled, she had more going for her than mere stage presence. After her dubious glow-worm debut, Sheerah went on to be part of her high school's drill team and attended a variety of dance classes over the years. At one time she even became a certified aerobic dance instructor in the Seattle, Washington area. With her background in rhythm and dance, it is easy to imagine how she was able to make such a rapid transition to Middle Eastern Dance.

But that was some time ago. Since then , Sheerah has studied and practiced dance under a number of instructors, honing the technical ability she might have initially lacked. Sheerah is probably known best as a "gypsy" dancer, no doubt because of her full, curly dark locks and exuberant style. She always felt her style was a little different from other dancers' , and it was not until a few years ago, upon viewing a video of cabaret belly dancing in a Middle Eastern club, that she saw professional Lebanese belly dancers and felt the "ah ha" experience. As in "Ah ha, th'lt 's my style!" She found her dance roots on video! Little did she realize that her intuitive style was in her blood! She also studies Dunyavi Gypsy Dancing with Dalia Corella, and has performed in Dalia 's shows in Manhattan, New York.

Sheerah does Gypsy-style dancing in San Diego as well. Sheerah has performed with various belly dance groups, and dances and studies with Meleah and her troupe. She also performs solos at several restaurants, private parties, college shows, and community events around the county.

Sheerah has other interests besides belly dancing. As part of the troupe Hot Works, she has the opportunity to practice and display a fun blend of Middle Eastern, jazz, and hip-hop dance steps. Hot Works is a very high-energy and tightly choreographed group that is really fun to watch. On a completely different line, Sheerah is also a portrait artist. In addition to formal paintings and sketches, she does some interesting collage work with a definite feminine tone. Her pieces reflect the quiet, introspective side of this multi-talented woman. She also teaches aerobics in San Diego County in various gyms and recreation centers.

Whether you call it charm, charisma, stage presence, or magic, she's definitely got it! But she doesn't sit back and rely on that; she works hard. And that's what makes it easy to admire her.

One creates a mask that personi fies their shadow self and dances whil e wearing it, thus ac knowledging and

ex periencing the full depth of a ll that they have uncovered .

If we are to make ourselves public figures, I strongly

believe that it is o ur responsibility to be aware of both our strengths and our weaknesses a nd proceed accordin gly.
