Background

• Recommendations for a Pattern Repository: Requirements and Process Flow, ITS, October 7, 2010:– MKS Integrity 2009: Collaborative Lifecycle Management:

• The Challenge: Documents (16,101), Folders (1,697), Groups (147), and Email Messages (35,958) as of October 8, 2010!

– My Suggested Options:• High-end Software Repository:

– Patterns-to-Software Development (e.g. SOA.com-Logic Library)

• Semantic Wiki:– Media Wiki Extensions

• Cloud Computing SaS– MindTouch (Fork from MediaWiki), Spotfire (Spreadsheet Analytics),

and Concept-Map Ontology Environment (Knowledge Representation)

My History

• SIF – John Yanosy– Tried the Visual Knowledge Semantic Wiki (12/7/2006).

• SCOPE – Hans Polzer– Used the MindTouch Deki Wiki to relate the SCOPE document

and NCOIC Lexicon.• Services – Allen Jones

– Used the MindTouch Deki Wiki to author a Pattern (AHAW) document and relate it to the NCOIC Lexicon.

• SIF/SCOPE/Lexicon – Todd Schneider– Use MindTouch, Spotfire, and CoE to relate all three to one

another (new GBL glossaries).• Cloud Computing – Kevin Jackson

– Build a Geoviewer in the Cloud (Mindtouch and Spotfire) in Support of Data.gov and "Fighting Off One Map“.

Pattern for Spreadsheets to Spotfire Analytics

• 1. Inventory of Web Site/IT System:– Cover Page: Create a high-level spreadsheet catalog– Identify Items that are spreadsheets or should be

spreadsheets– Transfer this to the Wiki Page

• 2. Add Spreadsheets from Inventory and Reformat for Spotfire

• 3. Build Spreadsheets by Extraction, etc. for Spotfire

Network Centricity MindTouch Wiki Foreword

• September 22, 2010: The author of this Wiki has participated in the NCOIC as an invited guest since 2005 in the NCOIC Semantic Interoperability Framework Work Group and has developed this wiki to help understand the NCOIC and its products and promote semantic interoperability within the NCOIC and across other standards groups (W3C, OASIS, OMG) of which he is a member. The author is also a member of the SCOPE and Cloud Computing Work Groups and is using cloud computing tools (this Wiki, Spotfire Analytics, and Concept-map Ontology Environment (COE)).

Tim Berners-Lee:"Five-Star" Plan for Open Data

• He said public information should be awarded a star rating based on the following criteria:– one star for making the information public; (yes)– a second is awarded if the information is machine-

readable; (yes-XML and RSS)– a third star if the data is offered in a non-proprietary

format; (yes-XML and RSS)– a fourth is given if it is in Linked Data format; (yes-can

be converted to RDF)– a fifth if it has actually been linked. (yes- see example

in next two slides)

26

Some Next Steps

• So we could download “All the Documents in This Group” in Kavi and get a spreadsheet (729 documents).– It would be great if we could do this for all of Kavi on-demand to

just get the spreadsheet!

• If we continue doing this we can achieve more semantic interoperability across the NCOIC specifically and network centricity in general.– This was the goal of John Yanosy and Hans Polzer from the

beginning!• Be careful to differentiate between metadata used to

discover patterns, versus an ontology used to describe the internals of a pattern.

– NCOIC Network Centric Pattern (NCP) Metadata Strategy, John A. Yanosy Jr. December 5, 2008. 13 slides.

27

Lexicon-Glossary Use Cases• Chunk and Reference the Terms: Public Web Searching

– Find your official definitions with a Google Search.• See next two slides.

• NCOIC Product Authoring: Semantic Word Wheel for Consistency– Find the NCOIC Definition and how others have used the same term / concept.

• Can do a demo in Mindtouch Wiki. See slide 30,

• NCOIC Product Integration: Semantic Concept Checking and Harmonization

– Starts with a spreadsheet and eventually uses Cmap Concept Ontology Environment.

• See my NCOIC.xls with Table of Contents for the 10 Patterns in slides 31.-32.

• NCOIC Member Participation: – In addition, you could eventually ask the entire NCOIC membership to do a

simple spreadsheet of say their 10 most frequently used NCOIC terms / concepts by Concept Name, Definition, and Specific Example and we could compile/analyze these and have an interesting discussion about it at the next Plenary.

• I have done this before to help a community become more semantically interoperable.

Semantic Wikis• Queried NCOOIC Spotfire for Semantic Wiki: Found Two:

– Semantic Wiki for Net-centric Data Services:• Presentation by: Mills Davis, Managing Director Project 10X, Co-Chair,

Federal CIO Council SICoP (Semantic Interoperability Community of Practice), [email protected], 202-667-6400, and Connor Shankey, CEO, Visual Knowledge, Technical Lead, SICoP SWIM, [email protected], 604-730-0086.

• Mills Davis presented this material at the NCOIC Reston Plenary in Reston, VA, on August 1, 2006, with Conor Shankey providing a demo of the Semantic Wiki application.

– Semantic Wiki Presentation:• This presentation was jointly created by John Yanosy, Steve Russell, Mills

Davis, and Conor Shankey and presented at the Semantic Interoperability Track with SPAWAR at the November 2006 NCOIC Plenary in San Diego. It represents a consensus view by multiple NCOIC working groups on the potential of Semantic Wiki to enable us to collaborate using semantic technology at a more granular level than documents, but still enabling the importation and semanticizing of document content.

• A proposal was made by this group to pilot the Visual Knowledge Semantic Wiki in 2007. SPAWAR has already expressed interest in also using this too for similar purposes, which will enable SPAWAR and NCOIC to collaborate more effectively.

Glossary in Context

• Lexicon: a vocabulary, including its words and expressions

• Glossary: an alphabetical list of terms in a particular domain of knowledge with the definitions for those terms.

• Taxonomy: the practice and science of classification (meaning 'order' or 'arrangement')

• Ontology: a formal representation of knowledge as a set of concepts within a domain, and the relationships between those concepts. It is used to reason about the entities within that domain, and may be used to describe the domain.
