Unpaved Road

A First St. Rapids/ Sawyer Park (easy–moderate; varying lengths). This trail travels for several miles along the Deschutes River at the north end of Bend, and is part of the Urban Trail System. Bike to the First St. Rapids Park just off of Portland Ave. and follow the trail north. Turn around at any point along the way. Open year round weather permitting.

B Swampy Lakes Trails. There are numerous mountain bike trails that can be accessed from the Swampy Lakes Sno-Park, up Century Drive out of Bend. Riders can follow the trails to create their own loop. Swampy Loop is an easy 2.5 miles. Swede Ridge Loop is a more difficult 6.4 miles. Open late June–Oct.

C Phil’s Trail System (easy–very difficult). This trail system is anywhere from a 1-mile cruise to a 20-mile plus ride. To reach the Phil’s Trail trailhead, drive or ride about 2.5 miles west on Galveston (which becomes Skyliners Rd.) from the traffic circle at Galveston and 14th in Bend, until you reach a paved road on the left-hand side that’s marked with a bicycle icon sign. A half-mile down, the road intersects with the old Brooks-Scanlon Logging Road. Park in the parking lot at the junction where the elaborate system of single-track begins. Open May–Nov.

D Sunriver (easy; varying lengths). This is the only established network of paved bike trails in the area. It’s safe and accessible for all ages. To access, park at the mall in Sunriver and cross the street. Open year round, snow permitting.

E Shevlin Park Loop (easy–more difficult; varying lengths). Shevlin Park is Bend’s largest park encompassing 647 acres. The park offers many different types of trails. Tumalo Creek flows through the middle of the park. Open year round, snow permitting.

n Loop Trail: This 6 mile trail follows the rim of the canyon, runs through old growth ponderosa pine, including a few short, steep hills, and crosses Tumalo Creek twice. n Tumalo Creek Trail: This 2.5 mile trail follows the creek upstream from the park entrance to the southern end of the park, where it joins the Deschutes National Forest trail system.n Mt. Bike Trail: This is a preferred route for the mountain bikes, but is open to walkers as well. The trail climbs up and out of the canyon on the east side of the creek, and eventually links with the Forest Service trail system.

F Sparks Lake. Lava Lake, Edison Butte Trail System. (more–most difficult; 31 mile loop, 10 miles paved). This system of trails can be ridden as a long loop around Mt. Bachelor, or in individual sections. Riders can begin at the Sparks Lake or Lava Lake trailheads (both off of Cascade Lakes Hwy. 46, 26 and 39 miles from Bend, respectively), or at the Edison Sno-Park trailhead on FS Road 45 (4 miles south of the turnoff from Hwy. 46) The whole loop is a very long ride, so come prepared. There is a store at Lava Lake (open only during summer months) located at the one-third point on the loop, if you start and end at Sparks Lake. However, bring plenty of water, food, and extra clothing in case of sudden weather changes common in Central Oregon. For those who want a shorter but challenging ride, park at Edison Sno-Park and take the trail at the south end of the parking lot to Lava Lake (approximately 9 miles each way). Open Aug.–Oct.

Mountain Bike maps are available at local Bike Shops or Visit Bend.

Fun on Wheels

1 Pilot Butte State Park (easy/moderate 2 mile loop). There are two ways to the top of this 480 ft. butte, either a mile long paved road or a mile long dirt trail. Most people hike up one and down the other (beware of cars on road). There are spectacular panoramic views of Cascades to the west overlooking the city and the high desert to the east. Open year round.

2 Farewell Bend River trail loop (easy to moderate 3 mile loop). This is one small section of the Bend Urban Trail system, so pick up your copy of the Bend Urban Trails Map at Bend Parks and Recreation or Visit Bend, for many nice hikes and bike rides around town. Begin your hike at the Bill Healy Bridge on Reed Market Rd, in Farewell Bend Park. Park and follow the river trail on either side of the river. The west side of the river is the easiest. There are wonderful forest and river views. Open year round snow permitting.

3 Upper Deschutes River Trail (distances vary according to starting points). Deschutes River Trail system follows the banks of the river, starting in Bend at the Entrada Lodge, all the way into Sunriver, passing many scenic falls on the way. There are numerous starting points off of Century Drive on FS Road 41. Parts of the trail are open to bikers. For a great starting point on bike try starting at Dillon Falls and head up river to Benham Falls. Sections open year round depending on snow levels.

n Meadow picnic area to Benham Falls: 8.5 milesn Meadow Camp to Lava Island: 1.2 miles n Lava Island to Dillon Falls: 3.3 milesn Dillon to Benham Falls: 4 miles

4 Lava Butte/Lava River Cave/Lava Cast Forest. Located adjacent to the Lava Lands Visitor Center is this impressive red and black cinder cone “volcano” which rises directly off of Hwy. 97, 10 miles south of Bend. A 1.5 mile road spirals to its 500-ft. height then take the .25 mile rim trail to the fire lookout. There are also numerous other trails that start here. Lava River cave is a mile long walk down into the year round 40° temperature. Dress warmly with sturdy shoes. You can rent lanterns and get maps from the rangers at the entrance. Tour Lava Cast Forest on a one mile long paved pathway through an interesting landscape of lava flow with casts left from burned out tree trunks. Pick up an interpretive map at the trailhead. Open June–mid Sept depending on snow levels.

5 Newberry National Monument. Be sure to pick up a national monument brochure at the Lava Lands Visitor Center or at the entrance booth on FS Road 21 as you enter the monument. There are over 100 miles of hiking trails to explore in the monument. There are trails for everyone from a mile long obsidian flow hike all the way to a 21 mile hike or bike around the entire crater. Open June–mid Sept.

6 Tumalo Falls (short easy/moderate .25 to 4 miles one way). There is a map at the parking lot with many different hiking trail options. The viewpoint is a few steps from the parking lot or a short trail to the top. The top is a must— worth the 5 minute walk. There are multiple trail options from the parking lot, all well marked. Hike the trail upstream along Tumalo Creek. You can hike a mile along this trail to more falls or continue on a total of 4 miles to Happy Valley. Return via various loops. Open early June–late Oct.

7 Tumalo Mt. (moderate/difficult 2 miles one way). This trail is a steep climb from 6400 ft. to 7775 ft. in 2.0 miles with spectacular view at the top. This trail starts at the Dutchman Sno-Park 20 miles up the Cascade Lakes Hwy. Open early July–Oct.

8 Todd Lake (easy 1.25 mile lakeshore loop). This very popular, scenic trail circles around the lake. Trailhead signboard/map details other hiking options. Please respect the fragile meadow at the end of the lake. Open late June–Oct.

9 Sparks Lake (easy 1 mile loop). This is a photographer’s dream. Near the boat ramp check out the Atkeson Memorial Trail. A sign details the easy loop, which includes an easy .25 mile paved wheelchair section. Open mid June–Oct.

Green Lakes (moderate 4.5 miles one way). This moderate trail offers plenty of waterfalls, lava, and wildflowers as it gradually climbs alongside Fall Creek. During the summer this trail can be very crowded. Open Aug.–mid Oct.

Devils Lake (easy/difficult hikes & explorations). Devils Lake is a spring fed pool of green waters. It is most commonly used as the starting point for South Sister climbers, but there are many trails and different areas to explore in this area. Open mid June–Oct.

Sisters Mirror Lake Loop (moderate 7 mile loop). A scenic and fun 7 mile loop with South Sister views and swimmable Mirror Lakes. Begin this hike at Devils lot and take the Elk/Devils trail. Pick up detailed map at a Forest Service Office or at Visit Bend. Open mid July–Oct.

Metolius River Recreation Area. Be sure to pick up a Metolius Recreation Map at Visit Bend or at the information booth at the turn off to Metolius River off of Hwy 20 on FS Road 14. Trails in the Metolius area offer many scenic vistas from charming alpine meadows and pristine lakes to old growth timber and carpets of wildflowers. Visitors to the area can choose from true wilderness trails to more relaxing hikes around Suttle Lake or along the Metolius River. Open May–Oct.

Smith Rock State Park (easy/moderate/difficult). This park has some of the most scenic landscapes in Central Oregon.
