Looking back on 2012 from a national viewpoint, the AIA Economics and Market Research Group reports that November 2012 was the fourth straight monthly increase in the Architecture Billings Index (ABI), and the pace of growth accelerated each month. This is the strongest growth of billings in 5 years since the construction market collapsed. Firms in the Northeast and Midwest regions have reported a reasonably sharp upturn in business conditions as compared to the South and West. However, these regional revenue trends at architecture firms have been quite variable in recent months, and are likely to continue to be so in the months ahead, according to the research group. As President-elect in 2012, I had the good fortune to “intern” under our then President Dan Wilson. The rest of the Board, along with our newly hired and capable executive assistant Annamaria Marciano, all collaborated closely to advance last year’s agenda. For 2013 the officers on our Executive Committee, in addition to Dan, are President-elect Pasquale Marchese who will be running this year’s boat cruise (with his usual humor and panache I’m sure), returning Secretary Melissa Koonz (whose meeting minutes are so much better than mine were), and new to the Board: VP of Programs Mark Thaler, and Treasurer Bill Koonz. Continuing on the Board of Directors are David Pacheco and Bart Trudeau with newly elected member Paul Scoville. Dan Wilson will assume the role of AIA/NYS Director with Jeff Mural as Alternate Director. Thank to all members for your decision to run. Looking forward, COTE chair Baani Singh has developed a full schedule of events for 2013. We are also hoping to jumpstart the Historic Resources Committee and, in the arena of advocacy, we encourage more members to join the usual robust group of participants on Lobby Day. (A side note: Though the Historic Preservation Tax Credit we advocated for passed both houses in 2012, it was vetoed by the Governor in late December, with the financial demands of Hurricane Sandy cited by some as the reason.). Speaking of Hurricane Sandy, I am optimistic that some progress can be made on passage of the Good Samaritan Act, which would provide immunity from liability for architects serving as secondary responders to natural catastrophes. Anticipated activities with AIAS include pairing students with local qualified members as IDP mentors, assembling a panel of practicing architects for a give-and-take discussion with students, and inviting students to local firm lunch seminars.

January is the month named in honor of Janus, the god of beginnings and transitions. Looking back on 2012 from a national viewpoint, the

AIA Economics and Market Research Group reports that November 2012 was the fourth straight monthly increase in the Architecture

Billings Index (ABI), and the pace of growth accelerated each month. This is the strongest growth of billings in 5 years since the construction

market collapsed.

Firms in the Northeast and Midwest regions have reported a reasonably sharp upturn in business conditions as compared to the South and

West. However, these regional revenue trends at architecture firms have been quite variable in recent months, and are likely to continue to

be so in the months ahead, according to the research group. So as Frank Gehry once said, “You’ve got to bumble forward into the

unknown.”

From a local and personal viewpoint, AIAENY in 2012 continued to be a vigorous organization, maintaining its previous membership levels

and continuing to offer a variety of educational programs. We engaged with the community (e.g., local food banks via Canstruction) and

academia (the president of the RPI AIAS sits in on our monthly meetings), as well as hosted the highly successful AIANYS convention in

Saratoga.

As President-elect in 2012, I had the good fortune to “intern” under our then President Dan Wilson. Dan exceeded all expectations in

meeting the unique challenges of his position last year: a major transition in staff, the state convention, and a past-president who had

relocated out of state. The rest of the Board, along with our newly hired and capable executive assistant Annamaria Marciano, all

collaborated closely to advance last year’s agenda.

For 2013 the officers on our Executive Committee, in addition to Dan, are President-elect Pasquale Marchese who will be running this year’s

boat cruise (with his usual humor and panache I’m sure), returning Secretary Melissa Koonz (whose meeting minutes are so much better

than mine were), and new to the Board: VP of Programs Mark Thaler, and Treasurer Bill Koonz. Continuing on the Board of Directors

are David Pacheco and Bart Trudeau with newly elected member Paul Scoville. Dan Wilson will assume the role of AIA/NYS Director

with Jeff Mural as Alternate Director. Thank to all members for your decision to run.

Looking forward, COTE chair Baani Singh has developed a full schedule of events for 2013. We are also hoping to jumpstart the Historic

Resources Committee and, in the arena of advocacy, we encourage more members to join the usual robust group of participants on Lobby

Day. (A side note: Though the Historic Preservation Tax Credit we advocated for passed both houses in 2012, it was vetoed by the

Governor in late December, with the financial demands of Hurricane Sandy cited by some as the reason.). Speaking of Hurricane Sandy, I

am optimistic that some progress can be made on passage of the Good Samaritan Act, which would provide immunity from liability for

architects serving as secondary responders to natural catastrophes.

Anticipated activities with AIAS include pairing students with local qualified members as IDP mentors, assembling a panel of practicing architects for a give-and-take discussion with students, and inviting students to local firm lunch seminars.

CAREERS IN ARCHITECTURE THROUGH AIA

NATIONAL | ARCHcareers.org

Recent Graduates and Emerging Professionals are not the only

people looking for work in the Architecture field. With these

harder economic times, many Interns, Associates, Architects,

Planners and other design professionals are searching for the

opportunity to participate as a member of the Architectural

Community.

AIA National has set up an area on its website called Career

Stages, that does just that! Visit www.aia.org/professionals/

index.htm for more information.

While AIA Eastern NY does not post job openings on the web-

site, we do allow companies and firms to send job postings to

the office to be stored on-site. We will also hold members’ re-

sumes in the office for companies and firms to review.

If you have a job opening, please send the posting by email (as a

Finally, most of you are aware of my commitment and focus on sustainable design. The termination of the sustainable design requirement for continuing education (4 CEUs) by AIA national affirms that sustainability has mainstreamed and is now an integrated part of standard architectural practice. See the Sustainability Update article in this issue about the SD requirement and Governor Cuomo’s new Executive Order no. 88 which replaces EO 111, on Page 7. See you at the Design Awards! Anna P. Dear AIAENY Chapter Members,

We are going to start our 2013 VP-Programs Corner with a joint effort

between (Pasquale Marchese –former VP-Programs and 2013 President

Elect) and Mark Thaler 2013 VP-Programs.

First at all we would like to thank you all for renewing your membership

and for continuing to be a part of AIA, and in particular being part of the

Eastern New York Chapter.

As Pasquale mentioned in the last issue of the 2012 calendar year, we have started

working at our Events line-up for 2013. We will continue to provide programs that

interest our members, are beneficial to our profession, and help you accrue the required

CEUs to keep your membership in good standing. However, we also need your help and

input to make that happen. Please contact our office for any events that you feel can be

beneficial to our professional community.

As we have previously mentioned, this year our programs will include tours of historic

sites, our annual Design Award Ceremony and Boat Cruise, and topics relating to Risk

Management, Changes in Code Requirements, and new Material Technologies and

Construction Systems.

We are going to start our 2013 with a great half day program on Thursday, February 15,

focusing on Ethics for Design Professionals and we will Review a Case Study on Risk

Management, something that you won’t want to miss.

One important communication for all of you which you may have read in the AIA

announcement, Sustainable Design SD Units have been incorporated into the category of

HSW.

We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.

AIA ENY Mission Statement: To provide meaningful value and services to member architects and assist in their

professional development and success. To promote the profession and practice of architecture in the Eastern

New York area through public outreach and act as a visible point of contact to the local community. To develop

opportunities for members to dialogue and interact with one another in substantive ways. To nurture young

architectural professionals to become our future members and leaders. To highlight the achievements of our

members. To responsibly maintain a stable organization from which to pursue our mission. To support

architectural initiatives which seek to improve the quality of the built environment and create livable

communities. To facilitate the OneAIA concept and act as a conduit to AIA New York State and AIA National –

the voice of the architectural profession and the resource for its members in service to society.

Based upon the AIA ENY mission statement, the following are examples on how AIA ENY provides these

services:

o Networking

The opportunity to engage and participate, take an active part in the events and programs offered,

particularly in the areas of professional development and community advocacy. Opportunities to engage

can be found on many of the pages of our website: www.aiaeny.org. Examples of these networking

opportunities are: the annual Boat Cruise, monthly continuing education programs and the Design Awards

reception/ceremony. These activities provide valuable networking opportunities, ways to develop

leadership skills and create greater visibility within your community. We at the AIA ENY realize that

many of our programs are located in the population center of our chapter is too far for many of our

members in the northern counties. We are currently looking into having some of our programs located in a

more convenient area to accommodate these members.

o Advocacy

AIA ENY participates directly with AIA NYS’ Architects in Albany – Lobby Day each year, April or

May. The President and President Elect schedule meetings to discuss the issues that are important to the

design build profession. Members are encouraged to participate in the preparation before and the meetings

scheduled with their elected officials, as well. In 2011, through the involvement of the AIA ENY

members, AIANYS and the other AIA chapters in New York State, we had a very successful lobbying

event in May. We were able to able to get the Non Design Professional Ownership bill passed and signed

into law while also successfully defeating numerous bills that were not in our members’ interest. Other

areas where AIA ENY advocates for its members are within the National and State AIA Components,

where designated board members represent the chapter: AIA National’s Grassroots Conference, AIA

National and AIANYS conventions and the AIANYS Annual Meeting during convention.

o Knowledge

Like AIA National’s Knowledge Communities, AIA ENY offers the opportunity for members to become

involved with various committees (knowledge communities) in the chapter area. If there is a knowledge

community members are interested in attending that AIA ENY does not offer, AIA ENY accepts proposals

from its members to start a new committee in the chapter area. Right now, AIA ENY has the following

committees available (which all can be found on the Committees page of the website:

http://www.aiaeny.org/aboutaiaeasternny/aiaenycommittees.html):

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA SELECTS EYP ARCHITECTURE & ENGINEERING

TO DESIGN NEW 200-BED RESIDENCE HALL

ALBANY, NY – January 7, 2013 – The University of Virginia recently selected EYP Architecture & Engineer-

ing to lead the design of a new 200-bed residence hall and related site landscape planning within its existing first-

year student housing district. To be situated in close proximity to Scott Stadium, the new residence hall will be

located in the vicinity of the Observatory Hill Dining Hall and five existing residence halls (known as the Alder-

man Road Residence Halls), as well as to planned future residence halls south on Alderman Road.

The new residence hall will offer modern amenities, sustainable features, and will provide a strong sense of com-

munity and place. Designed exclusively for first-year students, it will include double rooms, floor lounges and

quiet studies on each floor, as well as group study rooms, a multi-purpose room, a commons, and two apartments

for residence life staff, all on the ground floor. A separate wing will include offices for the Department of Housing

and Residence Life. The new facility is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2015. The project’s site land-

scape planning component will determine how many future residence halls can be accommodated along Alderman

Road and will develop a landscape strategy to connect to existing residence halls further down the street. EYP is

pleased to be collaborating with Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects on this aspect of the project. EYP’s

wing is one piece of a multi-phase building project that will ultimately replace all of the 1960s-era housing on

campus.

Commented EYP Lead Designer Paul King, AIA, LEED AP, “There is an interdependency between building and

landscape that defines Thomas Jefferson’s original campus design. This project is intriguing because it restates

this interdependency.” He continued, “EYP is proud to share our design and campus housing expertise with the

University of Virginia.”

EYP is the expertise-based, integrated architecture and engineering design firm that specializes in sustainable de-

sign for corporate, government, and higher education clients around the world. EYP Energy is a division of EYP

that delivers integrated, comprehensive sustainability consulting and implementation services. Located in Albany,

Boston, Greenville, New York City, Orlando and Washington, D.C., the firm is ranked among the largest A/E

firms in the nation by Building Design & Construction magazine and has been recognized for sustainable design

leadership by Architect Magazine, Engineering News-Record, and Architectural Record.

The termination of the Sustainable Design (SD) requirement for continuing education (4 CEUs) by AIA national

affirms that sustainability has mainstreamed and is now an integrated part of standard architectural practice:

- Providers can now submit new courses in LU or HSW category only

- Previously submitted and approved SD courses will be listed as HSW only for 2013

AIA National’s sun-setting of the SD requirement at the end of 2012 interestingly coincided with the repeal of

New York State’s Executive Order No. 111 “Green and Clean State Buildings and Vehicles.” In its place Gover-

nor Cuomo signed Executive Order No. 88 “Directing State Agencies and Authorities to Improve the Energy Ef-

ficiency of State Building” on December 28, 2012.

This new Order provides for the measuring (or benchmarking) of energy use in state-owned and managed buildings

having an area greater than 20,000 square feet. Buildings receiving low benchmark scores will undergo an

ASHRAE Level II audit, with recommendations to be implemented within two years of the audit. Collectively by

2020 all state buildings must target average energy use reduction by 20% using 2010/2011 as the base level.

In addition to the requirements for existing state buildings, there are requirements for new construction:

“As part of the capital planning process, all affected State Entities shall include an energy efficiency analysis

in the design phase of all capital project plans. The capital project should include energy efficient measures or

technologies determined to be the most cost-effective.”

The New York Power Authority (NYPA) will establish a team to develop guidelines for administering the Order.

The guidelines are to be completed in nine months and the New York State Office of General Services and

NYSERDA will assist NYPA in that endeavor. It is reasonable to assume that the guidelines will include quantita-

tive targets.

The Order recognizes the fact that energy is a design issue. As architects, we have learned to excel in engaging a

variety of stakeholders in the design process. To help in the process, AIA has published An Architect’s Guide to

Integrative Energy Modeling in the Design Process which provides tools for the practitioner. (To download a

copy of the guide, go here: http://www.aia.org/practicing/AIAB094452). This guide can be used in conjunction

With this new Order and new codes such as the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) there are ripening

opportunities for our profession to assert its leadership and expand our services. Written by Anna P. Campas, President 2013 AIA Eastern New York

After Newtown: Architectural Measures After the tragic events at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Con-

necticut, local school administrators are questioning ways to make schools safer from weapon

wielding intruders. A recent Capital District Business Review article sought solutions from local

architectural firms including CSArch and Mosaic Architects. Both firms have extensive experi-

ence in public and private school design.

Randy Collins of CSArch described features such as the ability to lock interior stairway doors to

thwart an intruder. He also taps into the professional resource SchoolDesigner.com for ideas on

how to protect students and staff.

For Mike Fanning of Mosaic the benefits of replac-

ing all windows and doors with bullet-resistant

glass have to be weighed with high cost.

Other measures include increasing the number of se-

curity cameras, new vestibules and main offices near the building

entrance.

CSArch will convene a meeting of law enforcement officials, school administrators for the pur-

pose of discussing options. Randy Collins would like to prepare a guide for use by principals, su-

perintendents and business administrators on this issue.

es, designed to extend the character of Trinity College south toward New Britain Avenue.
