Written Examination
1. Union Public Service Commission conducts a written examination twice a year as a preliminary step for selection for the following :-
(a) Army, Naval & Air Force Wings of National Defence Academy (NDA) Khadakwasla, Pune
(b) 10 + 2 Cadet Entry Scheme at Indian Naval Academy Ezhimala, Kerala.
2. There will be negative marking for objective type questions. Schedule of examination is as under :-

SSB Interviews
4. Successful candidates will undergo interviews at various SSBs (Services Selection Boards) given as under :-
(a) Army - Allahabad, Bangalore & Bhopal
(b) Navy - Coimbatore, Bangalore & Bhopal
(c) Air Force - Dehradun, Varanasi, Mysore & Gandhinagar
5. Candidates will be assessed at the SSBs in two stages.

(a) Stage I. Screening Test : comprising of 2 IQ tests and PPDT (Picture Perception & Discussion Test. Unsuccessful candidates will be sent back home.
(b) Stage II. Only successful candidates of Stage I will be allowed for further testing of Stage II which will last for 5 days. This will be a three prong assessment;

Air Force Candidates will undergo PABT (Pilot Aptitude Battery Test)
6. Candidates who are recommended by the SSB will undergo medical examination at one of the Services Hospitals.

7. A merit list will be declared by UPSC based on candidate’s performance in written examination & SSB.
Training
8. NDA Common Training . Selected candidates for Army , Navy & Air Force will be given 3 years training at NDA Khadakwasla, Pune. They will be awarded B.A / B. Sc. Degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi.
9. Army Cadets.After passing out from NDA, Army cadets are given 1 year training at Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. After successful completion, they are granted Permanent Commission in the rank of Lt.
10. Naval Cadets.After passing out from NDA, Naval cadets are given 1 year training at Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala as under :-
(a) Sea Training - 6 months (promoted to
Midshipman)
(b) Training in Respective Branches - 6 months
After successful completion, they are granted Permanent Commission in the rank of Sub Lieutenant.
11. Air Force Cadets. After passing out from NDA, Air Force cadets are given 1.5 years training at Air Force Academy, Hyderabad. After 1 year they are granted Provisional Commission as Flying Officer. After completion of total 1.5 yrs they are given Permanent Commission.
12. Naval Academy. Cadets of 10 +2 Cadet Entry Scheme will be given 4 years training at Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala and are awarded B. Tech Degree on success completion.
Stipend During Training

During training at the three Service Training Academies viz. Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Air Force academy Hyderabad, Indian Naval Academy Ezhimala, Gentleman Cadets are paid a stipend of Rs 21000/- .However no stipend is given at NDA.

(a) Army - 157.5 cms(Gorkhas , Garhwali, Kumaon & NE region candidates - 152.5 cms)(Lakshadweep candidates - 155.5 cms)
