    Water Stewardship

Human activities often contaminate the world's limited freshwater resources,

threatening the health of lakes, rivers, and wetland ecosystems. Water is the

main ingredient in all of our beverages and is essential to our manufacturing

processes. Water also has broad impacts for our supply chain, as a key

component in the production of sugar, for example. Reducing water scarcity andenhancing water quality for our operations and communities we serve are direct

and vital business concerns. The world has a finite amount of water but, if

managed properly, there is enough to meet our personal, agricultural, and

nature an amount of water equivalent to what we use in all of our beverages and

their production. This means reducing the amount of water used to produce our

beverages, recycling water used for manufacturing processes so it can be

returned safely to the environment, and replenishing water in communities and

    nature through locally relevant projects.

This aspirational goal will be a multi-year journey for our entire system, but it is a

journey we have begun and will continue to pursue. Together with our bottlers,

we hope to establish a water-sustainable business on a global scale.

Our strategy is built on a comprehensive risk analysis of water resources in the

Coca-Cola system -- an analysis that provides a clear understanding of our water

risks on a global and local scale, enables business units to define and prioritize

ways to reduce water risks, and allows us to track progress in water stewardship.

    Sustainable Packaging & Recycling

At The Coca-Cola Company, we envision a world in which our packaging is no longer

seen as waste, but as a valuable resource for the future. By working to conserve natural

resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the entire life cycle of a

package, we are taking steps toward realizing this vision. From developing packaging

designs that use less material without sacrificing quality, to investing in technologies and

recovery systems that enable us to use more recycled materials, we are committed to

continuously enhancing the sustainability of our packaging and our business.

Our sustainable packaging strategy focuses on three key areas:-

    1 Package Design

    2 Community Recycling Programs

    3 Package Material Reuse

Our strategy is focused on improving our management of packaging performance. In

2006, we launched a global online inventory of our primary, secondary, and transport

package systems by sales and weight. In its first year, the inventory captured nearly

90% of our global unit packaging data. Through this database, we are better equipped to

measure resource efficiency and recycling rates.

For more information about our sustainable packaging performance, please review our

    2006 Environmental Report, go there

The Coca-Cola Company has invested more than $60 million to build the world's largest

plastic-bottle-to-bottle recycling plant and support recycling in the U.S. These

investments are part of a comprehensive goal to recycle or reuse 100 percent of the

Company's PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles in the U.S.

    Energy & Climate Protection

The implications of climate change for our planet are profound and wide-ranging, with

impacts on biodiversity, water resources, public health, agriculture, and much more.

Across the Coca-Cola system, we recognize that climate change may have long-term

direct and indirect implications for our business and supply chain. Our business system

has a role to play in ensuring we use the best possible mix of energy sources while

improving the energy efficiency of our manufacturing and distribution processes.

The Coca-Cola Company's climate protection strategy is focused on four key areas:

    1. Refrigeration Equipment

    2. Offices and Bottling Plants

    3. Fleet and Transportation

    4. Global Awareness and Action

    Global Awareness and Action

In 2007, we signed the UN Global Compact's "Caring for Climate: The Business

Leadership Platform." The Platform, which was announced in conjunction with the Global

Compact Leaders Summit, is a global call to businesses and governments to speed upaction on climate change. As a signatory we have committed to work to increase energy

efficiency and reduce emissions from our operations. We also have committed to

engage our global supply chain to work toward the common objective of advancing

    practical climate change solutions.

The three largest components of our system's energy consumption are manufacturing,

fleet/transport, and vending machines and coolers.

Manufacturing: Energy is consumed by our system's nearly 850 plants in themanufacturing process to provide the power for equipment such as boilers, chillers and

    air compressors.

Fleet/Transport: Energy is used by our system's fleet of approximately 200,000 vehicles

to transport ingredients, packaging and finished beverages.

    13/20

Sales/Marketing Equipment: Energy is used in our system's more than 9 million

vending machines and coolers to keep products cold. The Coca-Cola system's vending

machines and coolers are the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions within the

system and produce three times the estimated emissions of our manufacturing facilities.

Coca-Cola is committedto sustainable and responsible growth, and werecognize the health of our business is directlylinked to the health of the environment. Thatis why were working to address challengingenvironmental concerns by focusing on where wehave the most significant impacts and also themost potential to make positive contributions:water stewardship, sustainable packaging, energymanagement and climate protection.Last year, we set an ambitious goal for our globalsystem: to return to communities and naturean amount of water equivalentto what we use in all of ourbeverages and their production. We also are working to reducethe environmental impact of

our packaging by helpingadvance efforts that turn ourpackaging into a valuableresource for the future. And weare addressing climate changeby working to grow our business,

but not our carbon footprint inour manufacturing operations.

Through 2008 and in the years tofollow, we will share progress onour global efforts.

Protecting the environment isan integral part of our mission, values and actions.Engagement at the Olympic GamesThe Coca-Cola Company is proud to be thelongest continuous corporate sponsor of theOlympic Movement. This year, we have anexciting opportunity to contribute to ChinasGreen Olympics by helping raise globalawareness about the importance of environmentalstewardship while seeking to inspire action incommunities throughout China.

Global Water StewardshipWWF PartnershipWe are engaged in a multi-year partnership with World Wildlife Fund

    (WWF) to

combine our international strengths and resources to help conservefreshwater

resources. Together we are working to: Conserve seven key freshwater river basins around the world

Improve the efficiency of our systems water use Support more efficient water use in our supply chain, beginning with

    sugar production

Decrease our carbon dioxide emissions and energy use Inspire a global movement engaging industry and individuals to

support theconservation of freshwater ecosystems, species and water resources

We are committed to improving our water

efficiency ratio (the amount of water needed to

produce a liter of product) in China and around theworld. Our bottling plants in China had a water-useratio of 2.44 liters of water per liter of product in

    2007, a 9 percent improvement over 2006.

Wastewater treatment and reuse is anothercomponent of our water stewardship efforts in

China. In 2007, all of China system operations, including bottling and concentrate plants, met the

    Companys and local governments wastewater

effluent standards. In-line wastewater monitoringsystems have been implemented in 12 facilities to

track wastewater quality consistently. In addition, all 35 of our bottling plants have implemented

    water reuse and recovery projects.

As part of our watershed protection strategy, weare working with WWF to help conserve Chinas

Yangtze River, which is the lifeblood of centralChina and supports more than 400 million people

and countless fish and wildlife species. TheYangtze River Basin is a region of tremendous

economic importance; however, the regionsenvironmental health is at risk. Our goal is to

    implement sustainable river management practices

across the Yangtze basin. Examples of our activitiesinclude piloting a low-impact, sustainable dam

operation and launching an integrated river basinmanagement forum for the MinJiang and Jialing

    sub-basins.

Engagement at the Olympic GamesAs part of the Coca-Cola systems support of theGreen Olympics, beginning in 2005, Coca-ColaChina partnered with the Beijing OrganizingCommittee of the Olympic Games (BOCOG), the

Beijing Youth League, the Beijing Young Pioneersand The Firstnewspaper to kick off a citywideenvironmental education campaign called Savea Barrel of Water. The program encouragesstudents to water flowers with recycled or savedfresh water and reinforces water conservationhabits. By the end of 2008, the program will havereached more than 800,000 individuals in 22 cities. In March 2008, we helped launch a uniquepublic-private partnership with the United NationsDevelopment Programme (UNDP), the Ministryof Water Resources (MWR) and the Ministry ofCommerce to support government efforts toimprove water resource management and drinkingwater safety for communities throughout China. Aspecial component of this program is the Waterand Sanitation for Schools initiative. Phase Ibegan in May with pilot programs providingwater access, hygiene education and improvedsanitation (toilet and handwashing facilities) in ruralschools in Xinjiang Autonomous Region. Duringthe Games, our Coca-Cola Drops of Hope pinswill offer visitors an opportunity to support theWater and Sanitation for Schools initiative andhelp people receive clean drinking water. For eachpin sold, 5 RMB will be donated to the program.

We recognize that climate change may havelong-term direct and indirect implications forour business and supply chain. We believe that, beyond regulatory compliance, business can playa powerful role to help drive climate solutions

through innovation and competition.Through our Energy Management and ClimateProtection strategy, we are finding new waysto mitigate the environmental impacts of ouroperations and products. Globally, we arecommitted to reducing our Companys carbonfootprint by addressing the three largestcomponents of our systems direct energyconsumption: manufacturing, fleet and transportand refrigeration equipment. To support thiscommitment, we are working to grow the

business, but not our carbon footprint in ourmanufacturing operations and to take action toimprove the energy efficiency and reduce theemission of greenhouse gases (GHG) inour refrigeration equipment. We are building a sustainable refrigerationprogram that is the cornerstone of ourenergy management and climate protectionefforts. We have completed the transition tohydrofluorocarbon (HFC)-free insulation foamfor new purchases of refrigeration equipment.

HFC-free equipment generates 75 percent fewerdirect GHG emissions than traditional equipment. We have pioneered technologies that use carbondioxide as a safe and energy-efficient alternativeto HFC refrigeration in coolers and vendingmachines. We also developed a proprietaryenergy management system (EMS) for our coolersthat delivers energy savings of up to 35 percent.Recently, we placed our one-millionth unit of thisinnovative technology. Our local operating and distribution systems

also have an impact on our footprint. Most ofour beverage products are manufactured, soldand consumed in the regions in which they areproduced, which means less energy is requiredfor transportation. We are conserving fuel inour global fleet of approximately 200,000 dieselvehicles through the introduction of idle-reductionand biodiesel technologies. We also have begun

  • 8/7/2019 1 coca-cola social

    18/20

the use of diesel-electric hybrid trucks in selectmarkets, including China.

Energy Managementand Climate ProtectionOur Commitment...in ChinaCoca-Cola China works closely with its distributionnetwork to reduce emissions. We have pledgedto increase fuel efficiency and control emissionsby gradually replacing older vehicles with a newerand more fuel-efficient fleet. We plan to expandour efforts to increase fuel efficiency throughimproved driving techniques and practical energysavingtips. Where possible, we invite not only ourbottling partners but also third-party carriers tojoin our training sessions on energy-saving drivingtechniques. In Beijing, our new software systemis helping our fleet managers plan more efficientdelivery routes, measure fuel consumption andexecute preventive maintenance.Around the world, more than one million coolersfeature our proprietary energy managementsystem (EMS), and we are working to expand theuse of EMS technology in China.

Engagement at the Olympic GamesTo support the Beijing governments efforts toimprove air quality in the city, The Coca-ColaCompany will provide a clean fleet for theGames. All delivery vehicles operating in Olympicvenues will be electric or human powered.

With the support of Greenpeace, we haveannounced that 100 percent of the coolers andvending machines provided by The Coca-ColaCompany more than 5,600 units will featurean HFC-free natural refrigerant and proprietarytechnology that improves energy efficiency by upto 35 percent. This commitment alone will reducegreenhouse gas emissions by approximately 4,000metric tons during the Olympic Games theequivalent of taking more than 19,000 cars off theroad for two weeks.

    Global Goals and Strategy

We envision a world in which our packagingis no longer seen as a waste but as a valuableresource for future use. Our sustainable packagingstrategy includes three key areas: package design, community recycling initiatives and material reuse.Life-cycle management has helped us to sustainthe use of high-value recyclable materials andreusable packages. Each package we design is100 percent recyclable, weighs less than it did adecade ago and often contains recycled content. We have reduced the weight of the 8-ounce

  • 8/7/2019 1 coca-cola social

glass bottle by nearly 60 percent; the 12-ouncealuminum can by 33 percent; the 2-liter PET plasticbottle by more than 30 percent; and the 20-ouncePET plastic bottle by more than 25 percent sincetheir introduction.Recycling rates for beverage containers are amongthe highest of any consumer product packaging inthe world, and our Company has a long-standingcommitment to recycling. We believe educationis key to changing attitudes and behaviors aboutrecycling and litter prevention, and we partner withmany environmental organizations and communitygroups to promote and further increase thecollection of recyclables.

    Our Commitment...in China

In 2005, Coca-Cola China undertook a sustainablepackaging risk analysis with its bottling partnersto inform new packaging solutions. We havereduced the glass we use in our packaging byapproximately 11,000 tons by adopting Ultra Glasstechnology, and we have reduced our use of PET

by approximately 30,000 tons through responsiblemanufacturing and redesign efforts. In addition to working with our bottling partnersand suppliers, Coca-Cola China is engaging withgovernment officials and PET resin and recyclingindustry leaders to encourage expansion ofrecycling and recovery programs. We continueto share our experience with local recyclingsystems regarding post-consumer waste, the useof recycled content in packaging and our broaderfocus on sustainable packaging.

Sustainable PackagingEngagement at the Olympic GamesWe expect more than 26 million of our PET bottlesto be used at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.Coca-Cola China is working closely with BOCOGto understand the entire waste managementprocess throughout the venues, from servingto recycling facilities. Coca-Cola is promotingrecycling with signage on the catering uniformsand beverage displays in all Olympic venues andrecycling bins in all Coca-Cola-operated venues. To demonstrate the highvalue of PET bottles andhow they can be turnedinto desirable products, wehave introduced a line of

merchandise made out ofrecycled PET bottles. EveryOlympic and Paralympicathlete as well as hospitality customers and allCoca-Cola staff at The Games will receive exclusiveitems made out of recycled PET plastic, such asshirts, lanyards and hats, to help raise awarenessabout the many ways plastic can be reused.
