School Census – New Data

Childcare

The DfE state: Definition of 'childcare' is a regular offer of childcare or supervised care

of a child.  The offer is reliable and would enable parents or carers to work and would normally be paid for by parents or carers.

Schools who offer pupils ‘breakfast’ before school starts do offer ‘before school’ childcare – this includes secondary age pupils who buy breakfast before school starts. Though we would normally expect childcare to be paid for by the parents we are aware that some schools offer a free service.

School sports and activity clubs are classified as ‘extra-curricular’ activities and therefore should not be record as ‘after school childcare’.

User Defined Groups

End of Key Stage tests and assessments are generally performed by specific year groups however this is not always the case.

If there are pupils from other year groups being included it is easier to create a User Defined Group so that one Marksheet can be created for that group.

You may also find it easier to create a group for those Year 2 pupils who are being re-assessed for the Phonics test.

Key Stage Wizards are provided for…

EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage)

All early years providers must complete an EYFS profile for each child in the final term of the year in which they turn 5. For most children this is the reception year in primary school.

The main purpose is to provide an accurate assessment of individual children at the end of the EYFS. The profile describes each child’s attainment against 17 early learning goals, together with a short narrative about their learning characteristics.

Year 1 & 2 Phonics

The check will take place in June when a pupil will read 40 words out loud to a teacher. The teacher will assess whether he or she needs extra help with reading. If the pupil doesn’t do well enough in the check they’ll have to do it again in Year 2.

End of Key Stage 1

All pupils moving on to the KS2 programmes of study in the next school year are regarded as being in the final year of KS1. Most of these pupils will be in year 2 and will reach the age of 7 by the end of the school year.

Key Stage 1 SATs consist of formal assessments in maths, reading and writing plus informal assessments in science that take place throughout the year.

Key Stage 1 includes a marksheet for ‘P Scales’. These should be completed for pupils who are working below level 1 (W).

All Year 6 children are required to take externally-set assessments in English and maths.

Although there are no formal science SATs for all, ‘science sampling’ was reintroduced in 2014. Under this system, 9,500 children – five children from 1,500 schools – are randomly selected to take a science test. Schools that are selected will be notified by mid-May, and are legally obliged to participate if chosen.

Other subjects, including English writing, speaking and listening, are assessed by teachers rather than by children taking a formal written test.

KS2 also has a marksheet for ‘P scales’
