THE AUXILIAN

School days, school days; Dear old Golden Rule days. Reading and ‘riting and ‘rithmetic, taught to the tune of a hick’ry stick…. Even though there isn’t much hickory in Florida, the teachers manage to get their point across.

It is never too late to learn. It’s proven that brain function and longevity are connected. AARP recommends playing word games (such as Words with Friends) as a way to keep the brain waves moving. Check out some of the schools in the area, as well as a senior center near you, for ongoing education. Not only will you have fun, meet new people, and learn something new, but you will also be improving your life and maybe expanding your longevity.

Look up non-credit class schedules for lifelong learning at St. Petersburg College at www.spcollege.edu/lifelong. Or call the sheriff's office and get a paying job as a school crossing guard (727-582-6208). Most schools also are in the need of volunteers from as little as 30 minutes a week. So many options. And watch out for the hickory stick.

2015

The Glass Garden Gift Shop is putting the spotlight on Habersham Wax Vessels this month. They are offering a wide assortment of fragranced, handmade vessels from the famous Habersham Candle Co. The wax pottery collections continues to redefine decorative, fragranced accessories for the home without the need of an open flame.

Starting in October, the shop will offer five new Christmas designs and fragrances as well as the usual assortment of varied scents, such as chamomile and sea salt, lavender, patchouli oil, blueberry, sandalwood and more. The shop also offers two different stands to display the beautiful wax vessel to its greatest advantage.

This is rapidly becoming the best-selling item in the gift shop. The fragrance is long lasting. Should it ever need to be refreshed, just gently rub with a soft cloth or use a hair dryer for a few seconds on low, and the fragrance will be renewed for another year.

Please visit the gift shop to view the lovely, fragranced, wax vessels before they sell out yet again.

Items submitted before the 20th of the month will be considered for current publication.

Thank you to all that have contributed to this month’s publication.

A Special Thank You

Gift Basket Winner

At the August Supper Club, a drawing was held for a gift basket from Pampered Chef. The winner was our very own Jean Olson, who works in the Garden Grill. A percentage of the proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit the auxiliary.

No real rules. If you want a book, come and get it. If you want to leave a book, just drop it off. The little library is located in the room next to Carole’s office. Once you find it, you will love it. There is always something for everyone.

If you could see her granddaughter at a recent visit to a water park, you would understand.

Margarita says, when asked why she wanted to volunteer, “I love people. I have received so many blessings in my life; I want to share these with others.”

Did You Know?

The hospital today known as Florida Hospital North Pinellas has been serving our community for nearly 90 years, ever since a two-story, 12-bed facility opened in the summer of 1927. It came about thanks to the vision and dedication of Dr. Elmer W. Burnette, a resident who convinced the city that taking out a $25,000 bond to build Tarpon Springs General Hospital—only the second hospital in all of Pinellas County—would make Tarpon Springs a better place to live.

For more information on the history of our hospital visit https://www.floridahospital.com/north-pinellas/history.

Stop by and say hello to a very nice and helpful woman. Carol is the mother of one daughter and no grandchildren; but that does not matter, she just borrows her neighbor's. It helps her neighbor when she babysits and Carol loves it. She also loves the beach and being outdoors.

Carol also volunteers at Pack-a-Sack. The program is in some of the Pinellas County schools. It helps to provide food for children who might not be eating regularly at home. Palm Harbor United Methodist Church sponsors this particular program. They pack up the meals on Thursday (enough for the entire weekend), deliver them to the schools, and the children take them home on Friday. If there is more than one child in the home, the volunteers make sure there is enough for all of them. The chef is very careful to use only healthy ingredients and makes sure everything is very tasty. What a great way to serve your community.

One of our new volunteers, Margarita Santiago, has lived in Tarpon Springs for two years after moving from Dunedin. Margarita is the mother of three sons, a daughter, and several grandchildren. Margarita’s favorite hobby? Playing with her grandchildren.

Carol Donsbach, originally from Chicago, is now a resident of Palm Harbor and a volunteer at Florida Hospital of North Pinellas. Carol normally works on the third floor but will be helping at the information desk for a few weeks on Monday mornings.

Get Well Wishes Heartfelt prayers and words of encouragement go out to our under the weather volunteers and those volunteers who continue to be on the mend.

Elaner Lake and her husband – Continued prayers for Elaner in her continued fight against breast cancer. She has taken a medical leave of absence from her Monday morning post.

JoAnn Voigt – Prayers to JoAnn on her recent cancer diagnosis and the fight that is ahead of her. JoAnn works at the information desk on Fridays and will be taking a leave of absence to focus on her health.

Cal Huffman – Admitted to the hospital and now home resting.

Both Elaner and JoAnne would love to hear from everyone. Maybe a card or two to keep their spirits most high! For contact information, call Carole.

For specific Get Well Wishes to appear in an upcoming issue, please email us at [email protected] or leave in the folder at the information desk.

Sonia Speaks

Here, in our line of work, it seems as if suffering is amplified and as compassionate individuals, we wish everyone leaves here healed. Nevertheless, as Laura Story, the Contemporary Christian Music artist, puts it …

“Cause what if your blessings come through raindrops

What if Your healing comes through tears

What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You're near

What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise”

I confess that my default button is “Mrs. Fixit” and I want to get everyone better so no one would die or be in pain. Nevertheless, I have learned that it is in life's darkest hours that the light of Jesus is able to shine the most. My choice is to avoid it, but I know that we all will walk through suffering ourselves and we have to journey with others through theirs. So, yes, I agree. Suffering is not to punish us but to build us up in areas that could use some more muscle.

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4 KJV Rev Sonia Alvarado Chaplain-Florida Hospital

Our Condolences We are all very saddened by the passing of Muriel (Mickie) Pendleton and extend our sympathies to her husband, Cliff Pendleton. Mickie has been a volunteer here since 1991 and was an active member in all affairs of the auxiliary until the last few years due to declining health. It was always so nice to see Mickie when she could attend the general membership meeting with her suggestions and laughter. We will miss her and hope Cliff will be back at his post soon.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Austin Nelson and his family who are mourning the loss of a family member.

Congratulations Chaplain

Congratulations to Chaplain Anson Bobb who successfully completed his one-year Clinical Pastoral Education Residency program with Florida Hospital, Tampa. As a man of deep faith, Anson will be serving Florida Hospital, North Pinellas, among his other ministerial capacities. Known for his love of people and magnanimous presence, others are easily drawn to Anson. He is very tender; thus, others warm to him easily. The two special gifts Anson brings to patients and staff are humor and song. If you have not heard him sing, please just ask. So, join us in saying “Congratulations” to our Resident Chaplain, Anson Bobb.

Lillian Huffman recently celebrated her 90th birthday. Her husband, Cal, says her sweet smile is the same at home, as it is at the hospital. Wishing her many more happy birthdays.

Labor Day

Labor Day is the celebration of the American labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers. Promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, in 1887, an official holiday in September was established.

Although summer does not officially end until September 21, Labor Day often marks the end of the traditional summer season as students normally return to school near this day.

Autumnal Equinox

The autumnal equinox is the first day of fall, September 23, and celebrated by many cultures. For most people, fall is a time that ushers in harvest, preserving food for the upcoming months, enjoyment of the colors of the changing leaves, and beginning to prepare oneself physically and psychologically for the upcoming colder months.

Happy Birthday, Lillian!

Time to CELEBRATE!

September Birthdays Sylvia Stolberg 4 Catherine Richards 24 Sarah Piwinski 5 Anita Campana 26 Valerie Stockman 7 Michelle Donnelly 27 John Churchill 10 Jill Rooney 12 Rosalie Wagner 22

Did We Forget?

Our very own Donna Dennis celebrated a birthday in July and it did not make it into The Auxilian. Now, do you think Donna was trying to hide something? No, we don’t think so. She is too young to start doing that. Happy belated Donna, we hope you enjoyed it and next year we will make sure the world knows.

Grandparents Day

Congress passed the legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents' Day and, on August 3, 1978, then-President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation. The statute cites the day's purpose: "...to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children, and to help children become aware of

strength, information, and guidance older people can offer".

Celebrate this day by sharing forget-me-nots and stories about the good ol’ days. Grandparents, biological or not, are important to a family structure to help with the nurturing, upbringing, and education of children.

Bug Bites

Just because summer is officially ending, does not mean the bugs and bees get the memo. In Florida, we have to be careful year-round.

The best defense is to avoid them. The most effective strategy is to stay covered up. Wear long sleeves, pants, socks, and shoes.

Insect repellent is also effective, particularly the kind that contains DEET. Keep in mind that repellent is a chemical that can be hazardous to infants younger than 2 months, and should never be ingested. Wash it off as soon as you are back inside!

Peach, Tomato, and Basil Salad

Candy Corn Blondies Blondies are super soft, slightly chewy, and

buttery. The candy corn stays chewy after

it’s baked.

Ingredients:

½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick), melted 1 large egg 1 cup light brown sugar, packed 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup candy corn 1 cup white chocolate chips Directions:

Preheat oven to 350F. Line an 8-by-8-inch baking pan with aluminum foil, spray with cooking spray; set aside.

In a large, microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter, about 1 minute on high power.

Wait shortly before adding the egg so you do not scramble it. Add the egg, brown sugar, vanilla, and whisk until smooth.

Add flour and stir until barely combined; do not overmix.

Stir in the candy corn and white chocolate chips.

Turn batter out into prepared pan, smoothing the top lightly with a spatula. Very Important Tip - Avoid have candy corn touching the sides of the pan on the top surface because it will be prone to melting and turning into bubbly orange goo.

Bake for 22 - 26 minutes, or until done. Tip: In the final 5 to 10 minutes of cooking, optionally cover pan with foil to prevent top surface from browning as quickly and any exposed candy corn from scorching. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean, or with a few moist crumbs, but no batter. Allow blondies to cool in pan for at least 1 hour before slicing and serving. They will keep airtight at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

With a few peaches and tomatoes, you can create a seasonal salad that everyone will love.

Prep Time: 6 minutes

Ingredients:

1 Tbsp white balsamic vinegar

2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

1 lb peaches (about 3 medium), cored, sliced horizontally ¼-inch thick

½ cup lightly packed fresh basil leaves, torn or roughly chopped

Salt & pepper

Directions:

In a small bowl, whisk together vinegar and olive oil. Arrange peach wedges and tomato slices,

alternating, on a platter and drizzle dressing on top. Scatter with basil. Season with salt and

pepper. Serve immediately.

Cheddar and Corn Biscuits

Fresh corn, Cheddar cheese and heavy cream make these biscuits fluffy and extra tasty!

Yields: 16 biscuits

Ingredients:

2 cups self-rising flour

5 Tbsp cold unsalted butter, cut into chunks

1 cup fresh corn (from about 2 large ears), or frozen and thawed

1 ¼ cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese

1 cup heavy cream

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment.

2. Pulse flour and butter in a food processor until butter is pea-sized. Transfer to a large bowl;

stir in corn and 1 cup Cheddar. Add cream; stir until just combined. Dust hands with flour and

knead dough five or six times in the bowl.

3. Transfer dough to a lightly floured work surface and pat with floured hands into an 8-inch

square. Cut into 16 squares. Place on lined sheet; sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup Cheddar.

Bake until golden brown on top, 18 to 20 minutes. Serve hot or at room temperature. Store

any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Easy Fruit Cobbler

Forget bothering with homemade crusts and use canned biscuits as the crust on your favorite

cobbler. You can use your fruit of choice to make an amazing biscuit cobbler. Follow baking

directions on biscuits.

Tip: Sprinkle sugar on top of biscuits before baking for a sweeter biscuit.
