Summer still continues . . .. . . at least for a while longerin this part of the country.

As a result, I couldn’t resistone of the picnic settings(right) that caught the eye at arecent fundraising event bythe Design IndustryFoundation Fighting AIDS(DIFFA).

Designers selected favoritetextiles available at The RobertAllen Group and Beacon Hill(at the Houston DecorativeCenter) to create their picnicdesigns.

Perhaps the outdoor vignettemight inspire a gift idea (theholidays are just around the cor-ner!), if you’re so inclined togo the DIY route.

Speaking of the outdoors, for the first time we salute thelower Gulf Coast with a sup-plement filled with places togo and things to do in theRockport to Corpus areas. Itall begins on page 34.

In it, we feature a Mustang

Island showhome by SusanCastor Wilson, ASID, andMelton Henry, AIA Houston.

Looking ahead to October, you might want to join TeamThomas to raise money for theLeukemia & LymphomaSociety.

An advertiser – The OrchidTree Park & Gallery in RoundTop – brought the Light theNight Walk event to our atten-tion. She lost her son to thecancer. For more details, seeour Calendar on page 14.

Cheers!

Melanie Haynes contacted me because she did not likeher recording studio room.

She says her call to me came after reading inspira-tional before and after stories of client homes in HoustonHouse & Home, in addition to spotting a feature of myown laundry room in a past issue of Country Home.

Client Steps into a New Recording StudioMAKING A ROOM SING

BEFORE: A low roofline, clutter and narrow columns adversely affected Melanie’s studio/pool house. The owner thought she wanted a “beach-y” look since the buildingwas beside the pool. AFTER: Raising the roofline, paint and adding substantial columns and matching furniture made Melanie’s studio/ pool house sing.

“We liked your style and ideas right away and understood where you were going with yourthoughts.

“I’ve been an actress and voice-over talent for many years. What is now my audio studiowas on the property when we purchased our home 20 years ago. “It was a rather rough poolhouse built by the previous owner and used by my husband David as a workshop for his‘honey do’ projects. They essentially used it for extra storage and antiques and ‘fixer uppers’.

“David graciously offered the space to me after I began to outgrow my first little studio ina small bedroom inside the house,” she explains.

Before she met with me, Melanie thought she wanted a ‘beach-y’ look since it was besidethe pool. But she wasn’t sure how to decorate the space and was at a loss on how to pull it alltogether since living in the “black hole” of her other studio space inside the house.

TIP: Always consider flow when decorating a room, whetherwith color or style, or both.

Melanie felt like she wanted to make the studio renovation the best it could be–a pleasing, relaxing space off the pool, yet still professional. She already had a wrap-around desk that sheneeded to use in the large space as well as some large antique pieces she had not been ableto use inside the house.

AFTER: Melanie’s husband, David, painted the walls and cabinets Repose Gray, ensuring they matched the appliances. Additional cabinets and trim were done in Dovetail, another Sherwin-Williams’ hue. “Blue Pearl” granite counters and backsplash from IGM finished the room. BEFORE: Clutter, harvest gold appliances, unpainted cabinetswithout hardware and a lack of a proper island limited the kitchen’s potential.

• DO GATHER PHOTOS FROM MAGAZINES AND BOOKS of remodeling projects youfind appealing. They are a handy shor t cut to show your design professional theexact look you want.

• HIRE A DECORATOR to look objectively at your spaces and make suggestionsthat will help you redecorate on your budget.

• SOMETIMES THE MOST EFFECTIVE STRATEGY is to first rethink what’s alreadypaid for.

T R A D E S E C R E T S

Joetta Moulden offers home makeovers using your own home furnishings to create the home you’ve always dreamed of. Joetta believes your pieces collected through theyears reflect your personality and can be artfully arranged. Her ability to focus on your personal style and not let her own preferences influence the design of your homemakes her unique. See more makeovers on her web site at www.shelterstyle.com, e-mail her at [email protected] or call 713-461-2063. If an initial appoint-ment or referral is booked by September 30, a 10 percent first meeting discount will be given. Joetta’s www.shelterstyle.com website holds a “Pages of Happiness” ratingand, for the fifth consecutive year, a “Super Service Award” presented to 5 percent of companies that achieve and maintain a superior rating on Angie’s List.

AFTER: De-cluttering, paint, acces-sories, and cutting down the oddcabinet created a star-quality bath-room. BEFORE: Clutter and an oddwhite cabinet spoiled the bath.

STUDIO AFTER: By rearranging spaceand appliances, we made room forMelanie’s new audio booth and newwindow overlooking the pool.

There were severalsuggestions I madeduring that meetingthat would havenever occurred toMelanie.

The first idea wasto use a vinyl wood-looking floor. Shethen bought theArmstrong commer-cial grade called

Natural Creations Arbor Art Collection -- inWeathered Oak Golden Brown vinyl plank fromExcel Carpets, installed by her neighbor RussellLitton.)

The second suggestion was to keep thingsprofessional looking rather than beach-y andfeminine.

My third suggestion: pull paint colors fromthe large prominent desk sitting on one side ofthe room and paint the kitchen cabinets tomatch. David did a great job of painting, by theway. (The cabinets and trim are Dovetail latexsatin enamel, and the walls are flat Repose Gray, both by Sherwin-Williams.)

TIP: The most boring kitchensare all white because there is nocontrast between the walls, cabi-nets, backsplash, counters andflooring.

The IGM “Blue Pearl” granite was fabricatedby Fon with Tailor Made. Perhaps one of thebiggest changes came to the outside of the poolhouse—my suggestion to raise the roofline andadd round columns—Melanie’s favorite changes. Why?

“They give the studio a current, sophisticatedlook. She would definitely recommend seekingprofessional help, especially when it comes tocolor options and materials. The talented andeducated eyes of a decorator can cut through theclutter and emotional attachment to pieces andbring everything together in a unified, updatedand sophisticated way. My ‘window to the worldoutside’ makes it a pleasure to spend so muchtime in my audio booth,” Melanie concludes.

Nine Steps to a Dreamy Bedroom and a Good Night’s Sleep

BY MARSHA CANRIGHT

TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT

Creating a dream bedroom that assures a good night’s sleepbegins with a premium mattress, peaceful colors, luxuriouslinens and a cool, dark setting to soothe the senses.

Deep, restful sleep is the foundation of good health and thelack of zzzs can have a negative impact on your energy, yourwork performance, and even your heart health.

“Your bedroom should be a dream oasis,” says BarbaraSonnheim of K&D Home and Design Studio.

“It’s the place for relaxation, intimacy, and rejuvenation.Your bedroom is where you unwind and leave day-to-daytroubles at the door,” she adds.

Making conscious choices about what is calming to you canreap real benefits.

1. Begin with the bed. For your primary sleeping area, selecta bed that reflects your personality and taste. If you sleep witha partner, a bigger bed is better, as you are less likely to be dis-turbed by the other person’s sleep movements.

Cynthia Lipsey of Home and Sea in Galveston prefers acanopy bed that makes you “feel like a princess” and MaryMonn, co-owner of Antiques on Memorial, favors the roman-tic look of a carved antique bed, which nowadays can be fittedto a larger size bed frame.

Sonnheim’s pick is a no fuss contemporary platform bed.“If you’re a nighttime reader, you may want to select a bedwith an adjustable or padded headrest so you can sit comfort-ably in bed,” she explains.

2. Choose the right mattress. What goes on top the bed isprobably the most critical selection and key to snug sleeping.Experts say a firm mattress is usually best for the back. Still, the overriding priority is personal comfort.

“You spend a third of your life in bed so put some thoughtinto the mattress you choose,” says Deborah Bautista owner ofTista’s Fine Furniture.

Bautista is partial to a new line of mattresses, King Koil’sDuck Dynasty line, which she calls “truly luxurious.” Herstore also carries a variety of stationary, memory foam andadjustable mattresses.

3. Select beautiful linens. Never has there been so muchchoice in fine and affordable textiles.

Rule of thumb when buying cotton sheets, be sure to get athread count of at least 200; although, a higher threat countthan this may or may not improve the feel of the fabric to you.New fibers are making inroads.

“Bamboo is an amazing fiber that is organically grown and isoften combined with cotton. It’s naturally soft, light andstrong, and is more sustainable than most other fibers sincethe bamboo plant grows so quickly. It doesn’t need pesticidesand herbicides to grow successfully so it’s a nicer fabric tohave next to the skin,” says Nancy Charbonneau at WoodlandsFabrics and Interiors.

She also likes Modal, a fabric made from beech trees. “It’ssmooth and soft and washes fabulously.

Interior Designer Julie Dodson created in a Houston showhouse a luxurious bedroom that beckons a good night’s sleep.

Page 26: 0914 houhousehome vir

Moll carries antique linens, which are usually all cotton orlinen. Sheets, coverlets and pillowcases come from Franceand Brussels; the quilts are all hand sewn in America.

4. Plump up your pillows: Having the right kind of pillowfor how you sleep may help you banish morning aches andpains.

“For me, it’s the pillows that make a bed luxurious.Whether its Euros, bolsters, king or standards, even accentpillows – they are the finishing touch for a beautiful bed,”Lipsey says. “Pillows are pretty, but they're practical too."

5. Pick a peaceful pallet. Whether you’re using paint, paper or texture on your bedroom walls, choose peacefulcolors. Everyone tends to see color differently, howevercool blues and greens and light neutrals – tan, gray andcream, usually make the best bedroom choices. SherwinWilliams color expert Jackie Jordan recommends Sea Salt,Ponder, Sleepy Blue, Dovetail and Silver Strand as the mostsoothing colors to consider for your bedroom.

6. Soft lighting and blackout shades. A cool dark, place is the best environment for sleeping. Sonnheim saysthere should be no television light and no clock lights shin-ing red or blue.

“You need privacy in your bedroom, and these days thereare great window treatments that also offer energy savings. You can block out the light and block out the Texas heat,”she says.

Charbonneau says soft lighting will do until you’re readyto sleep.

“I love to use lamp touch dimmers that let you dim orturn your bedside lamp off with a touch of a disc next toyou. It’s the best $15 you will ever spend and it is availableat all home improvement stores,” she says.

“Blackout shades and draperies are a must in my world. You can use motorized drapery rods and shades in a bed-room set to a timer to open when you want to awaken.”

7. Keep out the clutter. Keep accessories and knick knacksto a bare minimum, says Ann Schamberger a designer withHouston’s Dwell in Style. “If the space is too visually dis-tracting, the eye and mind will not have a place to rest.”Another tip: make sure there is no clutter and no workitems – only simple, beautiful accessories and textiles. Yourbedroom should be a place where you are completely atpeace.

8. Sooth your senses. Aromatherapy, which is the bal-ance and harmony of body and mind, is a small but signifi-cant boost for a restful bedroom. “Rubbing a light essentiallavender oil on your light bulbs, lighting a candle or spray-ing your pillowcases with a light misting of the oil is a fab-ulous way to calm the senses,” Sonnheim says.

Lipsey suggests candles, fragrant scents and room spraysin the aromas of the sea, and lavender and lemon fragrancesfor a perfect nights sleep. “Don’t forget to set your iPadto the beautiful and relaxing sounds of nature, especiallythe sea. You'll be asleep in no time,” she says.

9. Unwind, unplug. Remember to unwind and unplug inyour bedroom. Turn off your smart phone, TV, and lap-top. All these devices keep you awake, and won't allowyou to rest easy. They will be there when you wake up in the morning! Try a sound machine that brings the“sounds” of a delicate rain or the rolling surf, available at Target, Walmart, online from $10 and up.

Consider a sleep monitor like FitBit One, Jawbone Upor Sleep Android that can easily map your sleep cycles andeducate you on your best sleep time. Available at BestBuy, Kohl’s, $80 and up. Eye masks made of gel-filledplastic or herb-filled silk or utilitarian cotton can cool andsooth your eyes while keeping ambient light at bay, avail-able at Nordstrom’s, Target, and online at Amazon andUrban Outfitters.

work pop. If you don’t want togo bright, try a monochromatic, neutral color scheme with inter-changeable, colorful accents, oruse a color that’s deeper in valuethan the rest of the wall. Forhomes with few architecturaldetails, use a bright color to makea bold statement in unexpectedspaces, such as the laundry roomor your furniture. A plain book-case, for example, is easy tomakeover with a vibrantly coloredbacking, giving it new lifethrough bold hues like NiftyTurquoise (SW 6941) and CoralReef (SW 6606).

FEELING BLUEIn the kitchen or bath, try pullingcolors froms your countertops. Tofind coordinating colors that willenhance the space’s best features,an easy tip is to lay a fan deck onthe quartz or granite and look forsmall flecks of color to jump out.You might see blue, which isanother huge trend both inDetroit interiors and on the run-way. Rich, saturated blues likeSeaworthy (SW 7620) add dramaand glamour to a space, while cre-ating contrast with lighter cabi-netry. Bright, vibrant shades, likeFlyway (SW 6794) and FrankBlue (SW 6967), will liven upyour space, while still payinghomage to quartz or granite.

CLASSIC APPEALBlack is being used in uniqueways, such as on pop-up ceilingtreatments and doors. A darkerceiling actually draws the eye upand makes the space feel taller in alarge enough space. Interior doorspainted black with white trim alsoadd significant visual interest, asthe contrast between the two col-ors create a classic, timelessimpression.Tricorn Black (SW 6258)

Houston Couple Heads to the LowerGulf Coast To Find a Pretty Retreat on a Barrier Reef

It’s a large, light-filled space designed to comfortably sleep16 people and to serve as a low-maintenance, multi-genera-tional retreat.

The cream-colored structure ringed in windows is a collab-oration between designer Susan Castor, Houston architectMelton Henry, and builder Jerry Buckley, who pooled theirprofessional resources to create a special beachside retreat.

It was a team approach from day one – to build an envi-ronmentally friendly home in a community called CinnamonShores, located on a barrier island stretching from Corpus toPort Aransas.

“The three of us were committed to proving that if we dida thoughtful and thorough job upfront, it could result in abeautiful home that is easy to maintain, efficient and comfort-able,” Castor says.

A Bellaire couple purchased the house in 2012 for $2 mil-lion.

The 4,000 square foot house features two living areas, twomaster suites, a kitchen or kitchenette on every floor, a wrap-around porch, and an elevator for easy access to each level.

“It’s the kind of place that when you walk in the door, youhaven’t got a care in the world,” Buckley says.

A neutral color pallet uses muted colors and textures in softwhites, grays, and beige.

The white oak stairs with stainless steel railings wind up thehome’s central core as if it were a ship, adds Henry.

A cupola with 12 windows caps the top of the stairs. Thenatural light enters at the top and filters downward through-out the house.

The lofty third floor opens to a master suite with panoram-ic views of the gulf, the beach and the sky.

A wide walk through between the stairs and the elevatorincludes two custom-built trundle beds tucked in the wall. There’s a separate bath adjacent to the stairs for those bed-

ding in the trundles, and balconies for relaxing. The second floor has the main living and dining areas, the

full kitchen, a coffee bar, and an entry to the second mastersuite above the two-car garage.

“The kitchen is my favorite room; it's simple but func-tional, and sleek and contained,” says Buckley.

It has two dishwashers, a huge pantry, an alcove for acomputer, a microwave drawer, and hidden appliances.

Kitchen counters are made of recycled glass or granite, and the cabinets are painted with Benjamin Moore’s WhiteDove.

A protected outside living area opens from the north sideof the dining room and wraps around the structure.

For Castor, it’s the master suite that holds her attention.“It has the most beautiful view of the sunset,” she says.

The ground floor has a living area with a kitchenette.

Next to it is a bunkroom with two sets of built-in bunkbeds and a full bath. A second bedroom has a queen bedand shares a bathroom with a third bedroom with twinbeds.

A mudroom sits behind the foyer and can be accessed bya side door next to the outside shower, making an easyaccess to return from the beach and shower before goinginside. The laundry room is hidden behind a barn door fin-ished the same as the walls.

Easy-to-clean porcelain beige tile covers the ground floor. The upper floors are engineered white oak with an oil staininfused into the wood for very low maintenance.

In addition to the views, Castor says she likes the interiornatural lighting and the use of cypress on the walls.

The home site is near the boardwalk, which crosses thedunes, following the zig-zag of the coast line.

The design team chose Kravet leather pieces for the downstairs media room; a p[ace for the children to hang out. Corpus Christi artist Linda Kronkemade the colorful glass plate hangings. The nesting table is custom made. The personal-size sofa pulls out into a double bed.

My family’s flight from thehill country to the coastbegan 12 years ago when wepurchased a second home inRockport.

After focusing on a gruel-ing work schedule in Austinthat spanned 20 years, wedecided it was time to enjoysome downtime. We chose awonderful waterfront homejust minutes away fromdowntown Rockport.

The little town’s charmimmediately captured ourhearts. We enjoy the dailyfresh seafood restaurants, coastal activities and the his-torical downtown area sprin-kled with quaint storefrontsand artist galleries.

It quickly became our “getaway” place for long week-ends.

My husband and daughterfished and explored thecoastal waters, and on somedays we would just relax onthe Rockport Beach and floatin the saltwater pool. Itbecame a regular part of ourlives. We anticipated Fridayswith gusto – just so we couldhit the open road and escapeto what we began calling“Our Happy Place.”

The little town ofRockport has given us somuch in terms of being ableto live life to the fullest. Each

month Rockport hosts suchfun activities as Market Daysat the Maritime Museumgrounds and an abundance offestivals.

Over the years, we haveattended every festival thatRockport offers. From theWine Festival, Oysterfest, ArtFestivals, HummingbirdFestival and more… there isnever a dull moment here inthis coastal town.

In 2014, we were given theopportunity to move toRockport permanently andwork at the coastal communi-ty; The Reserve at St CharlesBay. We jumped at the chanceand took up permanent resi-dence at “Our HappyPlace.”

Each day I arrive at workand watch the beautifulcoastal birds feeding in thewetlands and boats jetting byin search of fresh trouts andreds. It does not get muchbetter than that.

Never a day goes by that Iregret living in paradise. Wespend our nights watersidewith a glass of wine andwatch the dolphins swimminginto the canals. Life is sweethere on the lower Gulf Coast.

The House is in the DetailsCouple Builds for Function and AuthenticityBy Susan Fox

An “aha moment” surfaced for architect Greg Swedberg when homeowners Cindy and Jim Winton stood on the Norhill Heights lot in 2009, where their soon-to-be

house would be built. Just as soon as Cindy Winton said she wanted their house

to look like one of the stately 100-year-old-plus neighborhoodhomes, Swedberg, principal of 2Scale Architects, knew exactlywhat to design for them.

The Heights houses of that era, beginning in or around1905 and flourishing until 1930, were part of the Arts andCrafts Movement.

The simplicity of design succeeded the more opulent and boxydesigns favored during the Victorian times.

During the Arts and Crafts Movement, home designsfocused on craftsmanship, open floor plans and function.

The hallmarks of an Arts and Crafts home included usingquarter sawn oak on the floors and for cabinetry, and copperrather than other materials like iron and silver, which wasexpensive back then.

Built-in cabinets, beamed ceilings, stained glass, dark woodmoldings, exposed roof rafters, broad porches and exteriors ofwood, stone or stucco also defined the design period.

Allegro Builders constructed this 5,700-square-foot home in Norhill, which includes an 800-plus square-foot apartment. The architect was Greg Swedberg, principal of 2Scale Architects. Art Glass by Wells designed the stained glass.

So, with this inmind, Swedberg, con-centrated on helpingthem create a homethat reflects the manymarks of excellence.

How it BeganCindy Winton saysbefore building inNorhill, the couplecould not have identi-fied any architecturalaspect of any one oftheir previous homes, much less one of anArts and Crafts era.

“We’re lawyers, notarchitects,” she says.

But all that changedfairly quickly.

Once they decidedon a lot and under-stood the sensitivitiesof building in a morehistoric area, theybecame quick studies. They began touringhomes in southernCalifornia, as well aspursuing additionalinformation from othersources.

When she talksabout their home now,she is quick to pointout the key elementsthey incorporated intotheir own home.

The front porchcolumns, she says, aremore narrow at the topand wider at the bot-tom. They chose quar-ter-sawn oak for thefloors and utilized stainglass as importantappointments. Swedberg also notesthat they opted to usecopper for gutters anddownspouts.

The couple consid-ered everything, fromdoorknobs to thelibrary’s tiled fireplacesurround to the crownmolding.

The homeowners were attentive to such details as the Arts and Crafts-style porch columns. The narrow to wide shape ofthem are indicative of the era. The bold red color on the wood indicates Cindy Winton’s love of rich hues.

Page 56: 0914 houhousehome vir

house& home | September 2014 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net56

In the kitchen, the couple chose granite and Carrara marble. She says the latter was a desired material in the early 1900s.

They used James Hardie cement siding on the home’s exteri-or for two important reasons: One, it does not require the typeof upkeep wood does. And secondly, the planks come in thethree-inch width they desired.

About the HouseCindy Winton says her mother-in-law was at a place in her lifewhere she needed to move in with the couple. Because theirprevious patio home off Waugh did not offer adequate space, the Wintons began their search.

“We used to ride our bikes through the Heights, and theneighborhood just felt right for us,” she says, noting they ini-tially found a lot for sale by Allegro Builders. It was here theymet Swedberg who was employed by the builder at that time.

Above: The Wintons chose tile from Architectural Design Resource. They cus-tomized the design, inspired by Jim Winton’s former Navy Jack emblem, andframed it with a nautical rope designed tile.Left: Beyond the butler’s pantry is a “dirty kitchen,” which is often used dur-ing entertainment for easy cleanups.

They ended up finding a different lot, but continued towork with Allegro, the company that built the home.

The house is 5,726 square feet. On the first floor, there is aformal dining and living area, library, family room, a butler’spantry with “dirty” kitchen, powder room and the kitchenand breakfast areas.

Three bedrooms and three baths are located on the secondfloor, in addition to Jim Winton’s 93-year-old mother’s 835-square-foot apartment.

She enters the apartment just as if it were another bedroomdoor. An elevator, located at the back of the house, goes up toher apartment.

Cindy Winton says they never dreamed they would pick anArts and Craft home. They had not particularly favored thearchitectural style until now.

It’s home until they can sail the seas.

While most Arts and Crafts homes in the early part of the 20th Century would have had dark wainscotting and moldings, the Wintons depart from tradition in thebathroom, opting for a lighter and brighter space. The stained glass refects their passion for sailing.

It looks like wood. It offers the warmth of wood. But it isn’t.Some might insist it’s better.

James Hardie fiber cement siding is a product that does notrot, warp or swell. In this part of the country, where heat andhumidity often do a number on wood, builders often opt for thisproduct, which is available in more than 25 color choices. Its color per formance lasts 15 years on the pre-finished prod-

ucts. The company reports pastels and beiges as being themost desired hues, with blues, browns and even some greensgaining in popularity.

Additionally, the product comes in a variety of textures thatinclude smooth, cedar, rough sawn, shingle and colonial lap.

James Hardie recently began offering cement board in trim, fascia boards and for corners.

According to John Dybsky, marketing director for the company,it costs less than brick and cedar. For info: www.jameshardie.com

The rich colors andintricate patterns ofNicaraguan artisantiles add a spicyflourish to theMediterranean-stylehome of Houstonbuilder JenniferHamelet.

The tiles deco-rate the risers onher grand staircase, serve as the kitchenbacksplash in huesof gold, brown andblue, and create amosaic on the exte-rior garden wall.

There’s also aninlaid tile “rug” inher design studio,in the foyer, thebutler’s pantry, andtiles also serve as aborder to the pool’swaterline.

Hamelet first sawthe cement tiles sixyears ago whilescanning for qualitybuilding materialsonline.

“For me, therewere so many inter-esting patterns andcolors. I coulddesign my ownpieces on their Website and order thetiles I needed,” shesays.

“The tiles arebeautiful, strong, stain resistant, andit’s possible to cre-ate one-of-a-kinddesigns for manyapplications," addsHamelet.

Over time, shedeveloped a rap-port with tile afi-cionado MarcosCajina and hiswife, MelanieStephens, whostarted the tilecompany in 2001.It is based in LosAngeles.

Drawn by thebeauty and dura-bility of the 150-year-old cementtile floors in theGranada CulturalCenter inNicaragua, Cajinadecided to revivethe art of makingcement tiles.

He built a sin-gle tile press inthe basement ofhis Echo Parkhome, and 13years later he hasa full-scale pro-duction facility inhis nativeNicaragua.

“We draw ideasfrom Spain,France, Morocco,Nicaragua and ourown imagina-tions,” Cajinasays.

For Hamelet, who ownsHouston’sMirador Builders, the look and qual-ity of the tilesstruck the rightdesign chord. Itwas love at firstsight.

Complementing the tiledesign are random-width, character-gradeoak floors that have anebony stain with satinpolyurethane.

She is a builder but her degree from theUniversity of Texas is in design, and shetakes pleasure in creative pursuits.

“When I design a tile floor treatment, Iuse a border pattern and a field pattern,” sheexplains.

For her own home, Hamelet used tworows of the border back to back, and hadnew reversed corner templates created justfor her.

“My house is on a busy corner and whenI have parties, guests valet park and come tothe front foyer. My close friends pull intothe motor court, so I needed two entries. Idecided to make them mirror images, exactlythe same size, same door, and with matchingtile treatments,” she says.

STYLE & SIMPLICITYAn A to Z Guide to Living a More Beautiful LifeBy Ted Kennedy Watson • Sterling Publishing, 2011

The author sees beauty in all that is mundane, necessary and evenedible – whether it be clear glassware, kitchen towels, or apples andlemons. The common denominator in these objects and many more– from dominoes to pushpins and ribbons – is the good feelings andhomey aesthetics they offer. His words are inspiring; with hopes theychange how you might view the everyday.

He also shares what he calls “Ted’s tips,” such as: Use a cotton orlinen napkin at each meal toelevate the experience. Whenentertaining, buy a little, make a little and assemble alittle. Your guests don’t nec-essarily have a better time ifyou do it all.

Watson also sprinkles a fewquotes and recipes through-out the 160 pages.

BETTER HOMES & GARDENSTrade Secrets: InsiderAdvice on Creating YourOwn Personal StyleMeredith Publishing, 2004

This 216-page hardback seems tostand the test of time. It is 14 yearsold, and it’s still one that we like topick up and peruse. (Plus, it is adeal at $5 on Amazon!) Is itbecause all the homes are the per-

sonal ones of interior designers, shopkeeps and stylists? They most instinc-tively know how to build a solid decorating foundation for a home.

Our own Joetta Moulden, who does our monthly Before and Aftercolumn, is featured. You will find her in her own remodeled 1950s-ranchstyle Houston home.

Each featured person offers decorating tips and interior design ideas. One says because nice rugs can be pricey, buy smaller ones to place atop asea-grass rug for effect. Another advocates bringing in natural objects –rocks, shells and horns – to bring a touch of the outdoors inside.

We’ve pulled a few keepers off our bookshelf that we thought worthy of sharing.

G A R D E N I N G

Collecting rainwater has numerous economic and environmentalbenefits, and it can improve landscape health. After reading thisarticle, you may be left wondering why you don’t have your ownrain barrel.

Consider our lawns. They require about an inch of water perweek. In Houston we receive about 48 inches of rain annually, butnot in weekly batches. Instead, we get heavy rains one day wherewater flows off roofs and into storm drains, followed by weeks ofrainless days when we spend money irrigating yards from the tap.So why not intercept and save some of this free water for later use?

Besides being economically sound, rainwater promotes healthiergrowth. Chloramine, the most common disinfectant added to tapwater by municipal water suppliers, keeps our water safe to drink. Its job is to kill microorganisms, and it does so whether in ourcity’s water supply or in your landscape soil. Scientific studies haveshown that plants watered with collected rainwater grow faster andmore robust than plants irrigated with municipal tap water. Harm

the soil biota, harm the plant.Collecting rainwater has environmental implications including

flood reduction. Now, one 55-gallon rain barrel in your backyardwill not have a perceptible effect following the next torrentialdownpour. But if just 10 percent of 2 million Houstonians eachhad a rain barrel we could divert a million gallons of water fromour streets and drainage ways -- equivalent to 550 backyard swim-ming pools!

Keep in mind that not all rain barrels function well in our cli-mate. Some leak during wide temperature swings while others donot exclude mosquitoes. To learn more about rainwater harvestingand to make your own 55-gallon rain barrel designed for Houston,go to www.houstonarboretum.org and register for our upcomingworkshop on rainwater harvesting.
