It is a beautiful historic Villa with multiple performance venues and miles of hiking trails, on 175 stunning acres of open space in the midst of an urban landscape. Left to the people of California by the state’s first elected senator, James Phelan, for the advancement of art, architecture and music, Montalvo today is a nonprofit, member-supported arts center.

Our mission is to foster community engagement through the creation and presentation of multidisciplinary art, uniting the broadest possible audiences with a global community of artists. We do this through our diverse arts programs, including:

This summer Montalvo launches an exciting concert series presented by livE NAtiON in its renowned Garden Theatre. We also have a variety of programs happening year-round: we present jazz, folk, rock and classical concerts, public programs, and theatre/dance performances in the Carriage House Theatre and Villa. Montalvo reaches out to approximately 20,000 students through our school programs. We invite more than 60 artists to be in residence at the Lucas Artists Residency Program and commission new work in the literary, performance and visual arts. And we preserve and maintain the historic Villa and its grounds. We are passionate about what we do and we hope to expand the role of arts and culture as an essential community resource.

Through their unique methods of expression, artists increase our awareness so that we may see anew (Picasso’s Guernica); refresh our ears so that we may hear clearly (Cage’s 4:33); and expand our understanding

so we may think differently (Thoreau’s Essay on Civil Disobedience). I believe that artists’ insights, creative processes and completed artworks are especially useful during an era like the one we live in—a time of unprecedented social and economic reorganization;of rapid transformations within the environment, political, social and scientific systems; of noteworthy shifts in religious and cultural values.

AGENCY: The Work of Artists is a focused, thematic series of newly commissioned and existing art projects that explore the subject of interdependence—life’s dynamic, reciprocal interplay—from a variety of approaches including family, immigration, the environment, faith, cultural memory and economic globalism. More than 60 artists were invited to participate in AGENCY because of their sensitive, compassionate investigations into relationships among people, places and systems as well as their skillful production of valuable, engaging public art, film, sculpture, photography, literature, performance and architecture.

AGENCY bears some relevance for the present epoch by strengthening the cultural environment of Silicon Valley while furthering Montalvo Arts Center’s artistic mission to support and expand the role of the arts, artists, and arts organizations as a resources and asset for our culture and community.

Hirokazu Kosaka is a visual and performance artist, Zen archer, Artistic Director of the Japanese American Cultural Center in L.A. and an ordained Buddhist priest. In Kalpa: Time, Kosaka presents a group of woodblock prints adorned with poppy seeds referring to a story told by Buddha to explain kalpa, a Sanskrit word meaning eon. In Buddha’s account, a 16 square-mile cube is formed at the beginning of kalpa. A single poppy seed is placed in the cube each century, yet kalpa ends before the cube is filled. By adding poppy seeds to these prints, Kosaka draws a parallel between kalpa and the passage of time in our lives.

As part of Ruin Map, Kosaka invites elders from local communities to draw from memory the site of their childhood. He transforms the sketches into traditional woodblock prints on handmade papers that are assembled in flip books and exhibited in the participants’ communities creating a continuum between experience in time,past and present.

Sculptor Jan Henle screens a film Vivian Bittencourt and he directed about a living sculpture located on an abandoned coffee plantation in Puerto Rico. Con el Mismo Amor features the artist and local mountain men working the land with handmade tools. Following the screening Henle is in conversation with poet Bill Berkson.

Mierle Laderman ukeles is a sculptor, public and performance artist, Percent-for-Art Artist of Fresh Kills Park, and senior critic in sculpture at Yale university. Commissioned for Montalvo, O OAK OH! focuses on the health of Montalvo’s land and the sudden death of some of its ancient oaks. A Day of Gathering/Public Learn-In brings together scholars, spiritual leaders and experts to share their knowledge of these majestic oaks, the perils of Sudden Oak Death and solutions that are underway. ukeles’ evolving project concludes in October 2009 with a video projection, a second public conversation and performance.

Louis Hock is a video- and filmmaker, visual artist, and professor at uC San Diego. His project addresses the cultural clashes and exchanges occurring on both sides of the u.S.-Mexico border. His award-winning documentary series, The Mexican Tapes, is complemented by premiere screenings of The American Tapes in which Hock revisits the stories of three families he recorded 25 years earlier. FERAL, a video and sound installation, depicts the border patrol’s random selection process.

Mingwei Lee, a visual, performance and installation artist, joins frequent collaborator, architect Stephan Freid, to design a proposal for a permanent artwork. Lee envisions Grandfather’s Incline as a long, suspended inclining platform located on a popular Montalvo trail. The platform, adorned with a single potted tree, hovers above the nearby Garden Theatre. Their Project Space exhibition includes preparatory materials, process drawings and a scale model for Grandfather’s Incline. Lee and Freid hold a public conversation in December 2009.

Ingram Marshall is a composer of “live electronics,” tape collages, extended vocals and acoustic instruments. Jim Bengston is a well-respected landscape photographer. For their presentation, a projection sequence synchronizes Bengston’s photographs with Marshall’s electro-acoustic composition, Alcatraz. Afiara String Quartet will perform additional compositions: “Fog Tropes,” “Evensongs part 1,” “Eberbach” (with projected images), and “Evensongs part 2.”

As an artist-in-residence, Double G composed two commissioned string quartets, one inspired by the Santa Cruz Mountains and Montalvo’s trails (String Quartet No. 2 “Montalvo” 2008-09), and one dedicated to the Plumed Horse in downtown Saratoga (String Quartet No. 4 “Plumed Horse” 2009). Double G presents an afternoon of original compositions performed by L.A.’s Sonus Quartet.

Allan Sekula is a photographer, writer, filmmaker and faculty member at California Institute of the Arts. In 2008, the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens commissioned Sekula to create an installation of large, outdoor photographs called Edit Nine—a meditation on the last two decades of the life of L.A. For AGENCY, Sekula adds two images specifically chosen for Montalvo.

Called “one of the spearheads of contemporary bluegrass,” by Billboard Magazine, Tim O’Brien is a Grammy Award-winning country and bluegrass musician who adds to his vocal repertoire the mastery of several instruments including the guitar, fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki and mandocello. As co-founder and lead vocalist of Hot Rize, O’Brien served as a bridge between the traditional sounds-of-the-hill country and the modern styles of bluegrass in the 1980s. To date, O’Brien has released more than 10 studio albums and has continued to expand music’s borders as a soloist, a duo partner with his sister Mollie, and with his band, the O’Boys.

J.C. Smith channels his love of Chicago blues in this tribute to the legendary Howlin’ Wolf! Smith, originally from the Bay Area, is an outstanding performer noted for his energy and charisma. His new album, Defining Cool, is an incredible fusion of old and new blues styles ranging from West Coast Swing and East Bay Funk to raw Chicago.

Hubert Sumlin, one of Rolling Stone’s “The 100 Greatest Guitarist of All Time,” has shared the stage with favorites such as The Rolling Stones and Santana. His legendary status was defined in the 60s, when he was recorded as the guitarist for Howlin’ Wolf’s band with Muddy Waters.

Eddie Shaw has played venues from Carnegie Hall to the intimate Blues clubs in Chicago. Shaw won the 2006 and 2007 BluesMusic Award for Instrumentalist-Horn. Shaw & the Wolfgang was the original back-up band for Howlin’ Wolf.

The Harlem Quartet made their debut in 2006 at Carnegie Hall, earning rave reviews from The New York Times. Each quartet member is also a seasoned solo artist, having appeared with the New York Philharmonic, the Atlanta, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburg, Sinaloa de las Artes (Mexico) and Baltimore Symphonies, and the Boston Pops among others. This innovative string quartet “plays with panache” (The New York Times) and brings their impassioned sound to Montalvo.

Montalvo’s Teaching Artist Fellowship is the first national award of its kind offered to professionals in the field. A joint initiative between Montalvo’s education department and the Lucas Artists Residency Program, the teaching artist fellowship provides a four-month residency at the Lucas Artists Residency and places fellows in the school environment to work with teachers and students.

The Master Class Series provides students with unique opportunities to interact directly with world-renowned master artists representing diverse artistic mediums. Presented by the education department in collaboration with

Montalvo’s literary, visual and performing arts programs and the Lucas Artists Residency, the Master Class Series brings leading contemporary artists into BayArea schools for an exchange of knowledge and inspiration in the arts and in general life lessons. Through this 10-week program, students meet with local leaders as part of an investigative journey into the future of San José and urban spaces; develop skills in digital photography, web design, videography and civic journalism; and collaborate with artists, designers, civic leaders and other teens to engage in an arts- and media-based exploration of healthy communities.

The Wells Fargo Performing Arts Series for Students serves grades K-6 in Bay Area public schools, 50% of which are low-income with little or no access to the arts. Performances feature internationally renowned theater groups who represent a wide variety of artistic disciplines, ethnic cultures and social concerns.

Das Puppenspiel takes a step beyond the familiar Jack and the Beanstalk to present a series of tales handed down by storytellers over many years. The Jack Tales feature simple but clever Jack, who lands himself into all kinds of adventures in his travels. Large, beautifully crafted ‘bunraku’ style puppets and traditional folk music by professional folk musician and musicologist John Kirk combine to bring new life to this storytelling tradition. Come and be a part of the magic and fun as Beyond the Beanstalk re-introduces audiences to an American folk tradition.

Your child will shine during Montalvo’s summer Missoula Children’s Theatre: Performing Arts Day Camp! Registered youth rehearse their roles throughout the week with professional directors from Missoula Children’s Theatre, the country’s preeminent children’s theatre touring company. Youth gain confidence both on stage and off while participating in age-appropriate performing arts workshops led by local teaching artists, culminating in a performance of The Pied Piper. Workshops including voice, dance, set design and drama; all skills are taught throughout the historic Villa and on the Montalvo grounds.

What do you do when your town is overrun by ravenous rats? Sara, an orphan girl, and the other Townspeople of Hamelin town turn to the Mayor and his Council when their town is threatened, who then call on the Pied Piper to save them from the troublesome creatures. Find out what happened when the town is unable to pay the Piper, and the children are led away from the town along with the rats! Missoula Children’s Theatre’s full-scale musical adaptation of The Pied Piper features a talented cast of 60 local children from this week’s Performing Arts Day Camp.

Inspired by Montalvo’s Lucas Artists Residency and housed in the program’s artist studios, this weeklong day camp introduces young minds to diverse artistic disciplines in workshops taught by top Bay Area artists. Each Young Artist participates in process-oriented activities designed to foster creativity in an atmosphere of experimentation and exploration. The camp encourages friendships through the sharing of ideas and collaborative projects while allowing for individual growth and self-expression.

Celebrate the International Year of Astronomy at Montalvo! Art and astronomy collide at Montalvo’s sixth annual Starry, Starry Night. Coinciding with the Perseid meteor showers, Starry, Starry Night invites the community to learn about the vast night skies and the art it inspires. Enjoy stimulating astronomy talks by guest astronomers and hear a storyteller weave tales of the night sky. Explore space through contemporary art installations and films and create art inspired by the heavens. Sleep under the stars on Montalvo’s front lawn and wake to breakfast at the historic Villa.

NEW mEDiA& viSuAl ARtSThe New Media & Visual Arts program includes work in multiple mediums including sculpture, painting, film, video, photography and more. Audiences participate in the creative process through presentations of artists’ works-in-progress and have an opportunity to engage with artists through public conversations. Installations are presented year-round on Montalvo’s grounds, in the Project Space gallery or at the Sally and Don Lucas Artists Residency Program. New Media & Visual Arts programs are often presented with partnering organizations including MACLA, California College of the Arts, City of San Jose, ZeroOne, San Jose Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Since its opening in October 2004, the Sally and Don Lucas Artists Residency Program has gained worldwide stature as a model of curatorial practice leading to the support of new and challenging work in the field of contemporary art. The Lucas Artists Residency has also taken Montalvo to new levels of excellence and international recognition, already having reached hundreds of accomplished artists from 31 countries. Ten live/work studios and the commons building offer state-of-the-art technology and an environment conducive to both individual practice and the energetic exchange of ideas among multidisciplinary international and culturally diverse fellows.

Set on 175 stunning acres of open space with 2.5 miles of hiking trails in the midst of Silicon valley, montalvo Arts center occupies a historic mediterranean-style villa and hosts three performing arts venues, a 10-studio artist residency complex and a formal italianate garden. Built in 1912 by Senator James Phelan, california’s first elected senator, montalvo was bequeathed by Phelan to the state of california to serve as a site for the advancement of art, music, literature and architecture. montalvo dedicates 25% of its annual budget to the maintenance and preservation of this community treasure.

Join our seasoned volunteer docents on walking tours where you will learn about Senator Phelan’s country home, his life and his friends.
