With the feast of Pentecost we celebrate the birth of our Church. From within humble and simple origins Jesus selected a group of men to carry out his mission of bringing the gospel to the whole world. He didn't choose the scholars or the powerful or the socially skilled. It was more of a motley crew. Jesus chose fishermen, tax collectors, the inexperienced and young to walk with him for three years and learn God's will through His son and our savior. But after all this time, miracles, sermons, theophonies, the crucifixion, the resurrection and commission they were still afraid. There was a sense among themselves of abandonment, of unpredictability and uncertainty. They may have asked the question, now what? So imagine this group of strong, roughed and hot-tempered men all huddled up in a room for fear of the Jewish religious leadership and perhaps Roman authorities. Peter was there, the same Peter who didn't hesitate to strike a soldier with a sword during Jesus' arrest. Matthew was there too whom, before he meet Jesus, didn't think twice on collecting from the Jewish people, devouring the houses of the widows and the very poor. They were all there and they were afraid! But as they were at prayer with the Virgin Mary in the upper room, a touch of light, a roaring wind, and a moment of illumination took them by surprise. The Holy Spirit descended upon all of them and changed their lives, giving these, once timid and insecure men, the courage to go into the streets, into the world and preach the Word of God. Not only were they transformed into a new awareness and disposition they were understood by all. They emerged from that room intelligible, confident, and alive to claim their vocation to create community, to be messengers, and to love. Through the history of the Church the Holy Spirit has guided the hearts of those who are open to His message. The Holy Spirit was with Catherine of Sienna when she advocated the bringing of the papacy back from Avignon to Rome. It was the Spirit of life, which moved St. Francis of Assisi to bring renovation in founding his mendicant order and in so remaining custodians of the Holy places in the Holy Land. It was the action of the Holy Spirit what inspired John XXIII to call the Vatican II Council in his desire for “aggiomamiento”, updating the Church practices and operative theology. But the Holy Spirit is not done yet. In light of these recent scandals, allegations, and media frenzy involving some members of our presbyterate, he will let us know what to do. He will descend, once again upon His Church and give us the courage and wisdom necessary to do what is right, what is needed, and what is just. He will teach us how to do retribution to the victims and to help them, how to bring the perpetrators to justice, and how to operate with compassion and an attitude of prayerful wisdom, not looking for quick answers, not confusing issues, but once again rebuilding the Body of Christ. As we can clearly see the Holy Spirit has some work to do. As we reflect upon our openness to receive Him let us allow him to fashion us and His Church. "Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love." Happy Birthday Church!

Con la fiesta de Pentecostés celebramos el nacimiento de nuestra Iglesia. Desde sus orígenes humildes y simples, Jesús seleccionó a un grupo de hombres para llevar a cabo su misión de llevar el evangelio a todo el mundo. No escogió a los eruditos ni a los poderosos ni a los socialmente capacitados. Fueron más bien una tripulación abigarrada. Jesús eligió a los pescadores, recaudadores de impuestos, los inexpertos y jóvenes para que caminaran con él durante tres años y aprendieran la voluntad de Dios a través de Su hijo y nuestro salvador. Pero después de todo este tiempo, los milagros, sermones, teofonías, crucifixión, resurrección y la comisión, todavía tenían miedo. Había un sentimiento entre ellos de abandono, de imprevisibilidad e incertidumbre. Es posible que hayan hecho la pregunta, ¿ahora qué? Así que imagina que este grupo de hombres fuertes, ásperos y de temperamento violento acurrucados en una habitación por temor a los líderes religiosos judíos y quizás a las autoridades romanas. Pedro estaba allí, el mismo Pedro que no dudó en golpear a un soldado con una espada durante el arresto de Jesús. También estaba

allí Mateo, quien, antes de encontrarse con Jesús, no pensó dos veces en explotar al pueblo judío, devorando las casas de las viudas y los muy pobres. ¡Estaban todos allí y tenían miedo! Pero cuando estando en oración con la Virgen María en el aposento alto, un

toque de luz, un viento rugiente y un momento de iluminación los tomó por sorpresa. El Espíritu Santo descendió sobre todos ellos y cambió sus vidas, dando a estos hombres, una vez tímidos e inseguros, el coraje de ir a las calles, al mundo y predicar la Palabra de Dios. No sólo se transformaron en una nueva conciencia y disposición que todos entendieron. Salieron de esa sala inteligibles, confiados y vivos para reclamar su vocación de crear comunidad, ser mensajeros y amar. A través de la historia de la Iglesia, el Espíritu Santo ha guiado los corazones de aquellos que están abiertos a su mensaje. El Espíritu Santo estaba con Catalina de Siena cuando ella abogó por el regreso

del papado de Aviñón a Roma. Fue el Espíritu de la vida, lo que llevó a San Francisco de Asís a traer renovación y a fundar su orden mendicante y así el ser custodios de los lugares santos en Tierra Santa. Fue la acción del Espíritu Santo lo que inspiró a Juan XXIII a

convocar al Concilio Vaticano II en su deseo de "aggiomamiento", actualizando las prácticas de la Iglesia y la teología operativa. Pero el Espíritu Santo todavía no está hecho. A la luz de estos recientes escándalos, denuncias y frenesí de los medios de comunicación que involucran a algunos miembros de nuestro presbiterio, él nos dejará saber qué hacer. Él descenderá, una vez más sobre Su Iglesia y nos dará el coraje y la sabiduría necesarios para hacer lo correcto, lo que se necesita y lo que es justo. Él nos enseñará cómo retribuir a las víctimas y ayudarlas, cómo llevar a los perpetradores ante la justicia y cómo actuar con compasión y una actitud de sabiduría orante, sin buscar respuestas rápidas, no confundir los problemas, pero una vez más reconstruyendo el Cuerpo de Cristo. Como podemos ver claramente, el Espíritu Santo tiene mucho que hacer. Al reflexionar sobre nuestra apertura para recibirlo, permitámosle que nos forme a nosotros y a su Iglesia. "Ven, Espíritu Santo, llena los corazones de tus fieles y enciende en ellos el fuego de tu amor". ¡Feliz cumpleaños Iglesia!

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

At the center of our faith is the conviction that God loves us and calls us to love one another. God gives us a sign of his love and affection for us in giving us priests who serve as our spiritual fathers. They lead our parishes. They offer us support and encouragement in times of need. So often, without thinking of themselves, they serve with great generosity the people entrusted to their care. Now, this weekend we have an opportunity to express our gratitude for this gift that we have received. We will take up a special collection to support the priests who have supported us across our lifetime. This collection benefits both our active and retired priests and is directed to the Priests' Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA).

The PRMAA supports our 500 active and 225 retired diocesan priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. PRMAA provides for the healthcare needs of our active priests as well as the medical and housing needs of our retired priests. This is the only collection that supports the priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. It is separate and distinct from other initiatives for retired religious order priests, sisters, and brothers.

The active priests of the Archdiocese serve throughout Cook and Lake counties by proclaiming the Word of God, celebrating the sacraments, and offering a shepherd's care to our faith communities. Many retired priests continue to serve in their own way and have become indispensable resources for our communities. The health and well-being of all our priests are integral to their ability to work for us and serve our growth in faith.

Join me, then, in making a generous contribution to this weekend's second collection to support our priests. Let it be a sign of gratitude to them and to the Lord for the priestly ministry which has benefited all of us.

Estimados hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

En el centro de nuestra fe está la convicción de que Dios nos ama y nos llama a amarnos unos a otros. Dios nos da una señal de su amor y afecto por nosotros dándonos sacerdotes que sirven como nuestros padres espirituales. Ellos lideran nuestras parroquias. Ellos nos ofrecen apoyo y aliento en tiempos de necesidad. Con frecuencia, sin pensar en ellos mismos, sirven con gran generosidad a las personas confiadas a su cuidado. Ahora, este fin de semana tenemos una oportunidad de expresar nuestra gratitud por este regalo que hemos recibido. 135th Anniversary—June 21/22!

St Aloysius Gonzaga Present Day—Faithful to Christ In 2016 we received the wonderful news of our New Pastor, Rev. Claudio Diaz Jr. Fr. Claudio was previously the pastor of Mission San Juan Diego in Arlington Heights. He brought with him something which was both needed and most welcomed—implementation of a current Liturgy and Formation of Ministers. Fr. Claudio has brought a sense of fulfillment in the Word of God and he has brought knowledge to our Ministers of the Eucharist and the Sick. His love of the church and the Holy Mass is evident in the effort he puts into the decoration of the church for each season and special devotions. He has resurrected the special masses for Holy days and Holidays and even the yard masses for the summer are back again in full swing. Fr. Claudio has also been an important part of our participation in the Renew My Church effort of the Archdiocese of Chicago. “To address the challenges of our time, we are called by Jesus to rebuild. Renew My Church is a vision and strategic plan guiding our response to this call for renewal”. Fr. Claudio has kept our parish out of debt and once again the pews are beginning to fill up. The Archdiocese has recognized his efforts and we are not scheduled to begin the process until 2021! The future of our parish is in good hands. Our parishioners are praying and participating, and they are faithful to Christ. We look forward to more anniversaries and we welcome all with open arms in Christ’s name. We hope you will all join us on Friday, June 21 for our Solemn Mass with Bishop Casey and for our joyous celebration on Saturday, June 22 for the Benefit Dinner Dance.

San Luis Gonzaga presente día—Fieles a Cristo En el año 2016 recibimos la maravillosa noticia de nuestro nuevo Párroco, Rev. Claudio Díaz, Jr. El Padre Claudio fue el párroco de Misión San Juan Diego en Arlington Heights. Él trajo consigo algo que era necesario y fue muy bienvenido—implementación de una liturgia más al día y formación de los ministros. El Padre Claudio ha traído un sentido de cumplimiento en la palabra de Dios y ha aportado conocimientos a nuestros Ministros de la Eucaristía y los Enfermos. Su amor de la iglesia y la Santa Misa es evidente en el esfuerzo que él pone en la decoración de la iglesia para cada temporada y devociones especiales. Él ha resucitado las misas especiales para días santos y feriados y hasta las misas del jardín para el verano están de vuelta en pleno funcionamiento. El Padre Claudio también ha sido una parte importante de nuestra participación en el esfuerzo de Renovar Mi Iglesia de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago. "Para enfrentar los retos de nuestro tiempo, estamos llamados por Jesús para reconstruir. Renovar Mi Iglesia es una visión y un plan estratégico que guía nuestra respuesta a esta convocatoria para la renovación”. El Padre Claudio ha mantenido nuestra parroquia libre de deuda y una vez más los bancos están empezando a llenarse. ¡La Arquidiócesis ha reconocido su esfuerzo y no estamos programados para comenzar el proceso hasta el 2021! El futuro de nuestra parroquia está en buenas manos. Nuestros feligreses están orando y participando, y son fieles a Cristo. Esperamos más aniversarios y damos la bienvenida a todos con los brazos abiertos en nombre de Cristo.
