The Central Park Midsummer’s Haven was created to enhance and support the existent activities in the park, providing shelter and establishing a temporary landmark to the great American park. Inspired by the surrounding landscape and natural open shelters, the CPSP settles in a privileged area. Its location is in the halfway from the American Museum of Natural History to the Metropolitan Museum, while it also connects the Great Lawn to a nice viewing point to the Belvedere Castle. Its structure is composed by a canopy made out of 35 tree-inspired 7 meters wide hexagonal modules, with heights that vary from 4 to 5 meters. Each module feature a steel column structure supporting inclined metal tubes, covered with translucent Eco resin panels, in the season’s colors, tones of orangeorange and red. Below the canopy, an elevated wood deck shapes the pedestrian path. In order to create different views, its uses are divided in 3 different sections: in one corner there’s a relaxation area, with a net where visitors are able to lay and chill out after sports, and in the other one, an exhibitions area, in which the dense vegetation around it creates a pleasant environment. The central section is composedcomposed by a very flexible space that can host a large range of events: from concerts to fashions shows, plays or an open-air disco. Its flexibility is due to its modular stage, where acrylic triangles conform the different uses. With the aim of creating a low-impact and renewable pavilion, its modular composition allows remounting the structure anywhere with different arrangements, also the pre-fabricated pieces makes its installation easy and fast and enables to re-use its parts. All of the structure is elevated 60cm from the ground,ground, to ensure that the pavilion wouldn’t harm the park’s soil.

MIDSUMMER’S HAVEN

Each of the hexagonal modules is mounted around a central pillar which inclination directs rainwater to two pipes. Between them an H-section steel column support s the structure that at last receives a tubular metalic covering. The collected water can be reused to irrigate the surrounding landscaping or to refill the central water mirror.

The resting net is a place made from a tensile structure where people from all ages can interact and provide an extra shaded place for leisure and rest. In the exhibitions area, located in the opposite corner of the pavilion, pieces of art are held by glass pannels that are hanged on the strutucture’s tubes in the superior part and also fixed at the bottom by metal cables - its transparency gives a a fluid and light sensation to the visitor.
