17 FAMILY DEDICATION COMMITMENT JESSICA ADAM, SOPHOMORE “I like how the entire team is similar in the sense that we all have the same passion for the game and determination to accomplish our goals. At the same time I love how evey person is different and has something different to offer on and off the field.” CAROLINE CRYER, SOPHOMORE “I love how Duke lacrosse is such a family. The players and coaches together are so dedicated to taking the next step with this program, while building this great foundation along the way.” KIMBERLY WATHEY, SOPHOMORE “It is rare to be a part of something as special as Duke Women’s Lacrosse. There is a lot of love and a strong sense of togetherness because we all know what we’re working towards ... a national championship.” MEGAN HUETHER, SENIOR “I love Duke Lacrosse because we are so much more than just a team. Through working together every day we have formed bonds that will go far beyond the wins and losses, team and individual successes. Each individual is completely invested in the group. The enthusiasm and camaraderie among each member of this team is unbelievable; I could not have asked for better teammates, friends, coaches or mentors.” MICHELLE MENSER, JUNIOR “Duke lacrosse has become a family to me over the past two years. The incredible support offered by our coaches and teammates makes the overall team bond truly unique. The experience carries much further than just on the field, as each team member is committed to developing lasting relationships within the program that will carry beyond the college years.” KATIE CHREST, SENIOR “My favorite part about Duke Lacrosse is the commitment level shown by every member of our program. My teammates are my biggest support system and are responsible for making these last four years such an unique and special experience for me. Those associated with Duke Lacrosse will always hold a special place in my heart, and the pride that comes along with being a member of this program is something that I will hold on to for my entire lifetime.” KIM PASTRANA, SOPHOMORE “I chose to come to Duke for many reasons. The name Duke alone is pretty powerful, but two key aspects really sealed the deal. First was the team...or should I say family of sisters. Our team has so many different personalities that you think they would clash but in acuality everyone is truely a sincere friend and brings something special to the table! The second aspect is the coaching staff. The coaching staff is so committed and dedicated to the team in every aspect.” KRISTEN WAAGBO, JUNIOR “It is hard to put into words why I love Duke Lacrosse, but the one word that comes to mind is family. I have developed amazing relationships with my coaches, teammates and support staff, and it is easy to step on the field and play for them over myself. This type of selflessness and loving attitude makes me very thankful that I have had the opportunity to be a part of this special and successful team.” JESSICA MCBRIDE, FRESHMAN “I really like the size of the student body and plethora of academic opportunities. The support system from other students, professors, coaches, teammates and administrators creates an environment that strives for both academic and athletic excellence.”

Duke University was created in 1924 byJames Buchanan Duke as a memorial to hisfather, Washington Duke. The Dukes, aDurham family who built a worldwide financialempire in the manufacture of tobacco and de-veloped the production of electricity in the twoCarolinas, had long been interested in TrinityCollege. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 innearby Randolph County when local Method-ist and Quaker communities joined forces tosupport a permanent school, which theynamed Union Institute. After a brief period asNormal College (1851-59), the schoolchanged its name to Trinity College in 1859and affiliated with the Methodist Church.

The college moved to Durham in 1892with financial assistance from WashingtonDuke and the donation of land by Julian S.Carr. In December 1924, the school’s trust-ees gratefully accepted the provisions ofJames B. Duke’s indenture creating the fam-ily philanthropic foundation, The Duke Endow-ment, which provided, in part, for the expan-sion of Trinity College into Duke University. As a result of the Duke gift, Trinity under-went both physical and academic expansion. The original Durham Campus became knownas East Campus when it was rebuilt in statelyGeorgian architecture. West Campus, Gothicin style and dominated by the soaring 210-foot tower of Duke Chapel, opened in 1930.Academic expansion of the university includedthe establishment of new graduate and pro-fessional schools. Modern times have seen Duke realize itsfounder’s aspirations to become a major cen-ter of learning. The Duke University MedicalCenter has achieved international promi-nence, and many Duke schools and depart-ments are consistently ranked among thenation’s best.
