SUNDAY OF ALL SAINTS

Each day of the Church calendar is dedicatedto two or more saints. We know their names. Theseare the pious persons whom the Church has officiallydeclared to be saints, enjoying eternal happiness inheaven. The first formal canonization was of St.Ulrich, bishop of Augsburg, Germany in 933.

Originally, individual bishops or churches coulddeclare pious persons to be saints. Now, only thePope can do so.

Besides the canonized saints, there arenumerous saints, the men and women who lived theirlives in accordance with Christs teachings, whosenames the Church does not know. They lived a piouslife during their time on earth and now rejoice ineternity with God, even though they were notcanonized by the Church. These are the saints towhom this Sunday is dedicated.

Many people think that sainthood requiressome kind of heroic action. Of course, there weresaints who showed exceptional courage, leaving theirfamilies and going to labor camps where many diedpreserving their faith. There were saints who builthospitals and shelters for the homeless and poor. But,we should remember that these great deeds did notmake them saints, but rather their love of God andtheir neighbor.

Today, the Sunday of All Saints, we do notrecognize the great saints because they have their

own day within the Church calendar. Today weremember the small, unknown saints, the men andwomen who, in Gods plan, did not have theopportunity to do great deeds, who lived quiet,modest lives without showing the heroic virtues oftheir souls.

The Holy Gospel is not a theoreticalexplanation of the nature of God or heaven. Rather, itis a practical handbook of how a Christian shouldlive. Christs teachings do not require intellectualunderstanding from us; they require certain actions

from us. Keeping this in mind, we must say thatlittle saints are those people who accept thepractical advice of the Gospels. They accept themessage of God and incorporate it in their lives.

In looking at the deeds of the great saints andof the actions of the little saints, we come to theconclusion that the Lord calls us to saintliness - towitnessing the evangelical truth. Great saints are likethe unattainable top of a mountain for many, but wecan emulate the little saints by living Christsteachings each day of our lives.
