Tina Bruce, Professor of Early Childhood Studies, has been appointed CBE inthe New Year's Honours List for her exceptional services to early childhoodeducation in the UK. She is the only early childhood educator to have beenappointed CBE for early years education.

Professor Bruces highly distinguished contribution to the field includes writingand editing 29 education books, co-founding the Centre for Early Childhood

Studies at Roehampton University and co-presenting the BBC Radio 4 seriesTuning into Children.

Most notably, she was the coordinator of the Early Years Advisory Group tosuccessive government ministers for children for 10 years, playing aninstrumental role in laying the foundations of todays approach to the earlyeducation experienced by children aged 0 to 5 in England.

Trained at the Froebel Institute, which has since become part of RoehamptonUniversity, Professor Bruce went on to become a Froebelian educator guidedby principles that promote a holistic approach to teaching young childrenincluding creativity, play and first-hand experiences rather than a narrowapproach to the "three Rs".

Throughout her career, Professor Bruce has interwoven the Froebelian theoryand practice into her teaching, seminars and policy-influencing activities, andis best known for developing the 10 principles of early childhood firstpublished in 1987 in her book Early Childhood Education.

Professor Bruce said: "When I was 18 years old I attended the FroebelInstitute at Roehampton where I learnt the Froebelian principles for earlychildhood education. It was one of the most important moments in my l ife asit gave me the navigational tools needed to guide me through my career thesame tools that guide me today.

Director of the Early Childhood Research Centre (ECRC) at RoehamptonUniversity, Professor Kevin J. Brehony, said:

application to the care and education of children in their early years.

This latest recognition of excellence further strengthens the reputation of theUniversitys School of Education, which the Research Assessment Exercise(RAE) recently ranked third out of the UKs post-92 universities for research ineducation.
