Current projects:
(i) 'Usability of Music for Social Inclusion' as part of a network of universities from
Finland, Switzerland and UK, plus commercial s oftware specialis ts from Greece,
as well as Nokia, funded by the European Comm unity under Framework 7 (2008-
2011);
(ii, iii, iv) Three strands (to date) of research for Youth Music/Sage
Gateshead/Choir Schools Association/DCSF investigating impact of the national
singing programme 'Sing Up' on primary aged children (2007-2011);
(v) Esmee Fairbairn Foundation funded extension to the 'Sounds of Intent' project(with Roehampton University) (2009-2011) on music for children with complex
needs;
(vii) Longitudinal development of female cathedral choristers (in co-operation
with Wells Cathedral and University of York) (1999, to date, original ly part funded
by AHRB).
In addition, there are a variety of collaborative projects, some small, some much
larger, such as an international network on research into choirs, led by U
Lund/Malmo; 'amus ia' and the potential for m usical development, led by
Goldsmiths College; advancing interdisciplinary research in singing (AIRS)
(2009-2016) with an international network, led by University of Prince Edward
Island; mapping novice-expert behaviour in composing and performing (led by
University of Brisbane, funded by ARC).
Current research bids include
(a) impact of singing on other-than-musical development (led by University of
Kent, with Canterbury Christ Church University),
(b) the ageing female voice
(c) a proposed fMRI study of children's singing.
Recent projects include:
(i) TLRP/ESRC-funded project 'Investigating Musical Performance [IMP]:
Comparative studies in advanced musical learning' (2006-2008) with RSAMD,
Glasgow, University of York and Leeds College of Music (see

(ii) Esmee Fairbairn Foundation funded 'Sounds of Intent' project (with
Roehampton University) (2005-2007) on m usic for children with complex needs;
(iii) `EPSRC network 'Technology and the healthy human voice in performance'
(led by University of York). Other smaller scale research has been conducted for
the ABRSM, Guildha ll Schoo l of Music and Dram a, Amber Trust, RNIB, New
London Orchestra, and Soundabout.

Postgraduate Research:
Any aspect of music education (broadly conceived as relating to people, places
and processes where musical learning takes place). Current research students
and topics include: Owen (jazz biography and im pact on pedagogy); Yang (folk
music learning in Chinese higher education); Kayes (ps ycho-acoustic aspects of
the female singing voice); Mazzeschi (musical savant syndrome); Williams (vocal
health of male cathedral choristers); Knight (adult 'non-singers' in
Newfoundland); Azechi (links between mother tongue and rhythmic development);
Bishop-Liebler (dyslexia in professional m usicians); Purves (geography and
musical l earning); and Thomas (adolescents' brass instrument learning).
Recent PhD completions (2006-2009): [2009] Lanipekun (artistic comm unication
in opera rehearsals); Varvarigou (choral education in England); Preti (music in
hospitals); Hsieh (learning in jazz); [2008] Himonides (aesthestics of vocal
performance); Saunders (adolescents' views on m usic); [2007] Rinta (links
between children's speaking and singing); Papageorgi (performance anxiety);
[2006] Stunell (Primary school non-music specialists); Soares (Brazilian
adolescents and m usic technology learning)
Professional Activities:
Elected Chair of the internationally based Society for Education, Music and
Psychology Research (SEMPRE), President Elect of the International Society for
Music Education (ISME) (becoming President in 2010) and past Co-Chair of the
Research Comm issi on of ISME. Current and recent Visiting Professorships
include the Universities of Queensland (Australia), Limerick (Eire), Sibelius
Academy (Finland), as well as Canterbury Christ Church, Coventry, Roehampton,
UEL and the Royal College of Music in the UK. Member of the UK Arts and
Humanities Res earch Council's (AHRC) Review College for music. Acted as a
specialist consultant on (i) as pects of children's s inging and vocal development
for the USA National Center for Voice and Speech (NCVS) in Denver, the SwedishVoice Research Centre in Stockholm, as well as UK and Italian Government
agencies; (ii) the British Council in the Ukraine and Ministry for Education and
Youth in the United Arab Emirates on education and teacher development; and
(iii) the National Research Foundation of South Africa and British Council in
Argentina on the development of the national research cultures in music. Current
external examining at Masters' level: Limerick, Reading. Plus extensive PhD
examinations across the world.
