Peter Weston was born in 1940, and received his secondary
education atTiffin School, Kingston. He has a BA Hons in English
from Kings College,London and MA and PhD degrees from the
University of Exeter.
He began teaching in 1962, becoming Head of English in a
comprehensiveschool in Berkshire before joining Southlands College
in 1970 as a lecturer. In1980 he was appointed Head of English of
the four Roehampton Colleges,leading the second largest department
in the institution.
In 1985 he became Exchange Professor of English at San Francisco
StateUniversity in California, US.
On returning to Roehampton in 1986, he was appointed Dean of the
Facultyof Arts and Humanities, and later made proposals which led
to the adoption ofa modular and semester-based curriculum in
199295, which continue atRoehampton to this day.
Peter led the group which managed the application process which
achievedtaught and research degree-awarding powers for Roehampton,
granted in1997. Thereafter he played a key role in the formation of
the SurreyFederation in 1999.
He published in books and journals during the 1980s, including A
CriticalStudy of Paradise Lost (Penguin, 1987). His expertise in
quality andstandards led to his being invited to speak at
universities abroad during the1990s, in Bulgaria, Russia and
Poland, among others.
In 1996 he was appointed Principal of Froebel College and
University Pro-Rector, a joint post which held until December 2003.
He published in 1998 ashort biography of Froebel the first in
English for many decades and in2002 the first history of the
College.
He retired in 2005 as Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He is currently
Chair of theFroebel Research Committee, a trustee of the Froebel
Council and also of theNational Froebel Foundation, and President
of the International FroebelSociety.
