A MESSAGE FROM RABBI DANIEL STEIN…

Why do we remove all leaven from our house? In antiquity, bread was able to rise because of natural yeasts; dough was left to sit and the natural lactic acid bacteria would cause the bread to ride. This process--souring--gave naturally-risen bread its characteristic sour taste. When the Torah bans hametz, which we translate as leaven, it is actually prohibiting this natural, but timely, souring process in breads. The Israelites did not have time for their bread to rise--to allow the natural fermentation to occur.

The Hasidic Masters suggested that the process of searching for hametz was meant not only to be a physical search for traces of leavening agents, but also a spiritual search for those things which embitter our own lives and relationships. The preparation for Passover is meant to be a time of both spiritual and personal cleansing. We the physical cleaning is meant to prompt a deeper spiritual search: what are the behaviors that embitter our lives? In what ways have pride, ego, and anger limited the richness of our relationships? How has insecurity or envy gotten in the way of appreciating the success of others? How has fear limited personal accomplishment? What steps can we take to prepare not just our homes but our souls for the great feast of freedom?

This month, as we prepare for Passover, may we find the work meaningful, and may we be blessed with a holiday filled with family, friends, and memories new and old!

Dena, Miri, and I wish you all a Chag Kasher ve Sameach (A happy and kosher holiday).

Rabbi Daniel Stein

One of the great spiritual innovations of the Hasidim of the 18th and 19th centuries was to create allegorical readings of the Torah that made it continually relevant. Sometimes, it is challenging to understand the hard work that goes into preparing for Jewish holidays, especially Passover. Why clean every nook and cranny? Shlep dishes from the basement? Cook for hours? Surely tradition and family are compelling reasons for the continuation of ritual, but without spiritual meaning traditions will not likely endure. The Hassidic reading of Passover, though, can help motivate meaningful observance.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE …

Earlier this month, Bnai Abraham Synagogue lost Rabbi Emeritus Mark Shrager. Rabbi Shrager served as our religious leader for over 17 years.

He brought a special spirit to Bnai Abraham. Under his leadership we shared a warm and kindly atmosphere and a sense of belonging. The Rabbi presided over the programs and took special delight in participating in family events.

He reached out to the entire community and participated in events throughout the Lehigh Valley. We are planning a memorial service and further information will follow.

Our deepest sympathies go out to his mother and sister (Sarah Beth) and his extended family.

NEW ADULT EDUCATION OFFERING AT BNAI ABRAHAM TEL AVIV UNIVERSITY PRESENTS THE EMERGENCE OF THE

MODERN MIDDLE EAST

SIX SUNDAYS, 4:00-6:00 P.M. DATE: MARCH 23 – APRIL 27, 2014 COST: $36 PER PERSON (INCLUDES KOSHER DELI DINNER)

Bnai Abraham is excited to partner with Coursera and Tel Aviv University to offer a special distance learning opportunity; we will audit TAU's 6-week seminar, "The Emergence of the Modern East”, by watching the lectures together, projected on a large screen. After the lectures, a discussion session will be led by Rabbi Stein. A full description of the course, along with its faculty, is listed below:

This course will discuss the emergence of the modern Middle East from the fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the First World War to the present. It will discuss the Ottoman legacy in the region and the Western imperial impact on the creation of the Arab state system. The course will discuss the rise and retreat of Arab nationalism, the problems of internal cohesion of the Arab states, issues of religion and state, and the evolution of Islamist politics. It will also focus on the evolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict and its impact on the region and will conclude with an in depth analysis of the “Arab Spring” by placing these contemporary revolutionary events in their historical context.

Prof. Susser, PhD (Tel Aviv University, 1986), is a Senior Research Fellow at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies and former Director of the Center (1989-1995, 2001-2007). Prof. Susser teaches in the Department of Middle Eastern and African History at Tel Aviv University, and in 2006 he received the Faculty of Humanities outstanding teacher's award.

Prof. Susser spent the 2009-10 academic year on Sabbatical at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University as the Senior Fellow on the Myra and Robert Kraft Chair in Arab Politics. In August, 2009, he spoke at a Crown Center Symposium on “What's Up in the Middle East?” where he discussed the prospects of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. In October he participated in another Crown Center symposium on Middle East Politics: Present and Future where he addressed "Regional Dimensions: The Middle East in Context." In February, 2010, Prof. Susser lectured on "Fault Lines—Israel, Jordan, Palestine" at an international conference on Promoting State-Building, Managing Fault Lines, held in Jerusalem jointly by the South African-based Brenthurst Foundation and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. He also participated in the follow up conference held at Tswalu in South Africa in May. In February he delivered a lecture on "Israel, Iran, and the Arabs: The Middle East of the 21st Century," in the Shaol Pozez Memorial Lectureship, under the auspices of the Arizona Center for Judaic Studies of the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Prof. Susser published a monograph on “The Rise of Hamas and the Crisis of Secularism in the Arab World” in the Essay Series of the Crown Center for Middle East Studies and reviews in scholarly journals on George Gilder's The Israel Test, Rich Cohen's Israel is Real, and on Curtis Ryan's Inter-Arab Alliances: Regime Security and Jordanian Foreign Policy.

A Promise to My Father

We did not want to be separated from our father and mother so we ran back over to their line.

My father realized what is happening here and he said to me and my two brothers- “Children, go over there to save yourself so that you survive and carry on in the Jewish life I think this is what saved my life, my unspoken promise to my father - to remember to carry on. I ask Why Me? Nobody knows - I was not smarter or stronger or better over others and yet I'm here. So it must have been God who wanted me to live. I ask Rabbis and they say nobody knows.” --Israel Arbinder

Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia is now behind legislation mandating Holocaust and genocides education in Pennsylvania public schools. The Pa. State Education Association, the state's largest teacher's union, does not support a mandate. So far the Pa. House hesitates to impose an unfunded mandate. The House feels historically such requirements have been left to the Department of Education.

Federation president – elect Bud Newman states, “Teaching about the Holocaust and other genocides is already 'voluntary' and has landed us in the current sorry state of affairs: one where students are graduating without the faintest understanding of these subjects.”

[Rabbi Shrager Humor Corner] In memory of the kind of jokes that might remind us of the Rabbi.

So lettered on a sign in the window of a small jewelry shop was the name Carlington. A ritzy lady, passing by, wondered if the people who owned the store were in any way related to the Carlingtons who were the fanciest people in her hometown. Going on, she asked, "Are you the Westport Carlingtons?” The owners said, "No, the Westport Carlington are Kleins. We're the Shapiros.”

Hotel coffee shops charge according to the Bible. If you look at the prices, you're reminded of the quotation, “I was a stranger and ye took me in.”

Some of the Arab countries complained about the previous wars in the area. One leader said, “It's unfair. Israel has 3.8 million Jews. We don't have one!”

A man checked into a Miami hotel and said “Please wake me at seven.” The clerk said, “The receptionist doesn't get in until eight. Maybe you could wake her?”
